  • Metal scholars, the interludes in Phoenix were full of hidden messages. I tried to explore the provocative insights of Vessel as he embraces the conventional understanding of death in the opening interlude of their Teeth of God tour. In this deep dive, I dissect how the interlude reveals a daring perspective on life's greatest certainty. Join me as I unravel the layers behind the music, questioning whether death is truly the end, or just another beginning. Is the Euclid artwork the bridge to the band's future? I hope this analysis illuminates some of your inquiries about the band's lyrical depth, whole inviting you to ponder the very nature of existence itself. The interludes are inspired by Socratic and philosophical debates. This 1st one is pro afterlife, the second one will be a counterpoint, and so on and so forth. Stay tuned for more! Please like and share, please sub and hit the bell button if you can. Thank you! :)

Here's the transcript of Interlude 1:
"Truth is mere a conclusion that can reliably be derived from some observable phenomenon. We forget that truth is a tool. It is the hook upon which we hang on deeds and the bed from which we rise each day. To assume that death is the end is to assume that our being extends no further than the physical substrate that carries us. This assumption does not account for the way in which we experience being alive. Nor does it sit comfortably aside the fact that we’re not yet able to comprehend the way in which our being manifests itself from the flesh and bone that binds us. I believe that those gaps in our understanding are still wide enough to cast doubt on such conclusions. I believe that those gaps are yet wide enough for our souls to fit through. And drift onwards into some new realm."

I'm still emotionally recovering from the fact that I prepped and planned and wasn't able to get tickets in any of the cities within driving distance (Thanks, bots). Now I'm seeing all the footage from the tour and I missed so many amazing things and struggling not to feel jealousy and crushing disappointment. But thanks for sharing this because I love a good deep dive, especially for things you don't see/hear in their recorded songs and videos. Even as someone without religious beliefs, death can have so many meanings and implications, especially when it's a "character" within a work of art.

Is NY within driving distance for you?

@@dianaharris2389 oof, it's about a 9 hr drive to Radio City Music Hall. I saw that the show is on the 22nd. Sadly even if there are tickets left for that show (I'd need 3 for myself, husband and kid), we'd be back at square one for getting time off approved, money, and accommodations, just not doable with 10 days notice >.

I checked Ticketmaster for 3 months hoping someone would put tickets up for resale so I could go to one within driving distance as well but it never happened. They need bigger venues with more US dates, maybe now they they’re with RCA that will happen

I thought Cernunnos. Rebirth in the depths of winter, dies at spring/summer when Beltane takes over. Supposedly he is a protector. Although this is a more modern conjecture.
We don't actually know much about this antlered god figure.

How I hoped you would say something to this when I heard the interludes the first time!
I came to a very similar interpretation, curious on what you want to share in relation to the remaining.

Thank you! I've now tackled them all, I think they're all related to death but not only the passing, but also death of relationships - death of friendships - cycles - rebirth - learning to cope with losses, etc.

@@alextamulis That makes a lot of sense to me! It's rather typical to frame all life experiences in a life & death/ beginning & end cycle in spiritual knowledge.
I wonder what drives him to focus now on that topic like that. Why he chooses something that has less to do with him specific.
If I remember correctly you also spoke about the texts that he wrote relating to his mask and masked self. For instance; he asked himself if people would like him if he wasn't masked. That was way more personal/ close to him as a person. The new ones feel to me more like a kinda preaching.
