- Metal scholars, deconstructing “Ascensionism” can be risky business because the lyrics are painfully metaphorically. They also have lots of religious/spiritual references. And the fact that Sleep Token doesn't say anything about their intentions also adds more mystery and aura to the songs. I just can't help it and I've tried to delve deep into the symbolism of the song. In my opinion, the main contrast and juxtaposition lies with the combination of rational and spiritual, represented by the algorithm and the deity. Everything else will revolve around that idea - diamonds and pentagrams (chemistry and magic), lipstick and red flags, one eye on the door and other on the rail... this song has so many amazing contrasts and vivid imagery, it's one of their most poetic and diverse. Relating to this a lot more nowadays. This song hit me before, but now it's on another level. I'll spare the details, but I feel like I am being held down, and I need to ascend.

Nice interpretation. I had an abusive relationship with a partner and I can relate to this song.
The lipstick, pink nails etc, are the love bombing and passionate moments, the chemtrails and the red flags the toxicity . Nightmares, vigilance and the menances when I wanted to leave him.
The invisibility, the moments he wanted to alienate me from my loved ones.
But, Its my interpretation, and subjective of course.

The other day I got the idea that "diamonds in the trees" could be a weed reference.
Also I highly believe "blood stains on the collar" is related to drug abuse.
The way interpret the “diamonds in the trees, pentagrams in the night sky” line is like being willingly ignorant of malice because you’re blinded by beauty. Evil masquerading as material wealth.
It’s unreal how many interpretations there can be of a single song, ST really has next level lyricism.

This was also my first understanding of that line till the other idea was in my mind.
I'm sure his lyrics can have intentionally multiple meanings.
Also I dont see why both cant be true. Blinded by material things and what they give you is similar to being blinded by highs caused by substances that are also in a material form. Both if used to blind are obviously harming.
I love this aspect so much in his writings, I could immediately tell he loves poetry what excited me very much. Even when his imagery is rather dark.
Imagine NYC at night. The lights shine so bright, you can't see the stars, right? I think of those lyrics as being blinded or distracted by diamonds in the trees, that you can't see an impending doom, or pentagrams in the night sky.
Those lyrics still need to be unwound beyond that level, but that's the imagery which makes sense to me.
So i always get "BLoodstains on the Canopies, just don´t ask me" And Diamonds in the Trees could resemble Leaves, so like Fall, The season of change. Also Pentagrams could resebmle Stars, These ancient canopies he used to lay beneath and watch the stars

I've gone down a Hindu folklore rabbit hole and see a lot of parallels in the imagery with Sleep Token lyrics and the art.
The Ascensionism figure has four arms holding various objects. The one side holding objects that appear to be a censer and trishula (trident associated with Shiva that represents various trinities including death, ascension, and resurrection) while the other side appears to be holding weapons. The bit of string looking thing could also be wires alluding to the "half algorithm" with the opposing censer "half deity". May be off on what exactly the objects are, but they definitely seem to represent dual natures which is also very common amongst Hindu deities.
The lyrics where it sounds like there is a third eye following a scarlet trail makes me think of foresight regarding something dangerous. It also reminds me of Granite "nevermind the death threats parting at the door we'd rather be 6 feet under than be lonely"
Now one last bit of Hindu imagery (sorry if you are bored reading this) in the Euclid figure. Kali is often shown holding a blade representing divine knowledge and a severed head representing the death of ego. I am no expert of anything though and i know humans across the world have come to the similar conclusions about the nature of humanity and existence. Just wanted to share since no one i know has even the remotest interest in this stuff haha
