    Thanks so much for the step by step instructions! You have taken an old guy into a new age!! While I am pretty familiar with all the basic sound tech stuff in an analog format, these tutorials have really shown me how effective and convenient the digital format can be! I cant wait to try it out in a live setting!!

    Thanks for the refresher as our band don't play much anymore as they are all raising families. Finally the band members are going to inner ear monitors and figured I would start fresh as it's been a few years. All we do when we can get the time is play in the studio and I don't get to play with the DL32R as I purchased it the first year they were out. Just wish I had more time with the band to operate more often however the refresher sure helped. Thank you, Pat

    Hi cygnet1963,
    Thanks for your compliments, I do run the faders up pretty high but not on purpose, it comes from mixing on old analog gear for so many years. I did a lot of recording with analog gear and it was always imperative to do whatever it takes to achieve maximum signal to noise ratio, ie: music verses noise. So many engineers tell you to set the master fader to zero dB before you start mixing. To me, this meant causing the sound board to send way too much hiss to my main speakers before I even began to raise the faders, I hate that. I do not suggest placing the master fader to zero dB unless you need full access to the volume that your speaker system can produce, I never find myself in that position so I start with the master fader about -15 dB. Starting about -15 dB will give me plenty of level and not force me to have all my faders slammed to the top. Good observation on your part :) Even though most of our gear today is digital, the outputs are still analog and produce some noise unless we are sending audio to our system digitally. Back on subject,,, usually every so often, and many times at breaks, I lower all the input channel faders by about 6 db, then raise the master fader for the L/R mains and subs about 6dB. More importantly than signal/noise ratio,.... is the balance of the instruments and vocals,... that is always more important than where knobs are set or faders are positioned. I see videos here on youtube of engineers who are running FOH sound for major acts and their input channel faders are all about identical,,, geez, there is no way the balance can be exactly what it needs to be,, it is in those cases where the sound person is using the gain setting to alter levels, and that is not what the gain setting is for, the faders are to ride levels,... oh well now I am ranting :)
    Have a great day and I hope this answers your questions. Dan

      I love it Doc! Sadly though, colleges are not interested in instructors with experience, only someone with a piece of paper showing their "supposed" knowledge of teaching. I would love to teach this stuff at a college. I just recently had some sessions with some sound guys at their brand new church and one of them is just finishing up his finals on "Audio Engineering" at a local college. I congratulated him and then he said to me.... "can you explain that Pre/Post thing again". I could not believe that not only did he not understand what pre and post fader was,,, but more sadly,,,, does he know that an octave below A-440 is simply 220. So sad, a nice guy too but has so much to learn. Worse is that I know his instructor, and listened to a jazz CD that he had to mix because I was out of town and the entire CD was mono and he never even knew it,,, and this guy teaches people about all things AUDIO.. Made me ill... :( Oh well, youtube is the new FREE college :) Thanks for posting! Dan

      @@user-jx3jp3gb4x Hello Dan, I learned all about pre and post, eq, reverb, tape echo, panning, etc. from Bill Seddon, Jack Richardson and the rest of the faculty at Fanshawe College in London Ontario way back in the nineties. I feel so lucky to have received such an excellent education. I later became an aircraft maintenance engineer and commercial pilot. Lately I’ve been flight instructing and teaching aircraft maintenance on a contract basis at a Canadore college in North Bay. You’d be amazed how much of that recording engineering course translated into my later studies and teaching. More the point, you’d be an excellent college instructor. I watched this entire series (I’m considering a dl32s for local gigs and recording projects) and your teaching style is relatable and organized. The real life examples coupled to the specific button pushing on gear itself kept me engaged and learning. I’ll be watching the whole series again with a note pad and the software running. Thanks so much. I’ll be watching for your 5.1 updates.

      fantastic Chas! Have a good time with it, two tips for you...., the 1608 has one big weakness,... it's inability to recall the gain pot adjustments on the mixer. After a job and before you tear down, take a picture of the gain knobs and email it to yourself with the job location and date. Or, you can get an app that will allow you to draw on top of the picture, that way you can make sure your settings are at least close to start with when you load the same snapshot. Buy an Apple Airport Express router, you will love it!!!! Have fun and trust your ears,, and oh,, ask any questions if you get stumped. • @user-jx3jp3gb4x
      @user-jx3jp3gb4x  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chas,
      yes, I am talking about the gain knobs along the top of the 1608. When I bought my 1608 they were extremely easy to rotate, no resistance at all, so I bought some black rubber grommets and slided them in half, that way I would have basically two O-rings for each grommet purchased. I know I'm cheap right? I removed all the knobs and put one O-ring over the potentiometer shaft, and then replaced the knob. The rubber ring made it more difficult for the knobs to move. Take a knob with you to the hardware store (don't lose it) and make sure that the hole in the center is big enough to fit over the pot's shaft, and the outside diameter is no bigger than the knob.

    Hi Dan, I can't thank you enough for your time and effort. At the time Mackie entered the Digital mixer domain, the other members had very deep pockets.The frontman, and keyboard player each pre-ordered DL1608 mixers. Unfortunately, what they had in funds, they lacked in the tech world. I have back and neck injuries, so I was unable to lift more than 20 lbs. Since i am tech savvy, I felt obligated to learn and run all their toys. I tried teaching them, but gave up. The band broke up, so I bought one of the 1608s, but haven't logged many hours.I've mainly used it in my home studio. While in that band, I did run sound at 1 gig. It was a disaster, I ran out of headroom, and even bypassed the DSP, but had no gain. I later found out Mackie hid a gate and compressor on the mains, and they default to completely squashed. What were they thinking??? I had watched all 3 Mackie videos with the blonde haired Mackie guy, and thought I had the bases covered. At the time, I had downloaded them to my PS3, so I could quickly review them. After many hours, I found a 30 second snippet explaining those culprits hiding behind the FOH EQ. I'm a lead guitar / vocals guy, but in the last few years, went from 3 bands to 0. In October '16, I answered a listing for a sound man for a full time local band, and we debut the end of April. Not bragging, but 40 + years of playing, will probably put me above the guy I'm turning up and down Ha! I'm very happy I found your video, you have helped me tremendously. The funny thing is, I ran sound from the stage for all the bands I played with, and now I actually get to hear hopefully above average mixes thanks to you.

      I meant every word Dan. I'm a mostly self taught "half fast" sound man / lead guitar player / Front and backing vocalist, and have a basement studio. I am using Sonar Platinum with lifetime updates, have a Behringer BCR2000 for soft synth, effects parameters and a Mackie MCU that's my favorite toy. I Have a couple midi / USB interfaces. I still use a MOTU 1224, and recently added a Behringer FCA1616, that was a steal for the price. So the DL1608 has lived in my studio, only scratching the surface of its capabilities. I was recently asked to join a local band as a full time sound man, and I accepted the first gig the end of April. That's where the rubber will meet the road, and you have taken a heavy weight off my shoulders. I have created an off line show, complete with EQ, Gates, Compressors ,and even have library photos for each channel. I've been in front of analog boards for decades, but after I accepted the offer using the DL1608, my knees were knocking. With your help, I'm confident I will do okay, all because of you. Thanks!

    I have view ALL your Mackie DL videos. They were very informative. I was looking at the routing video for how the "output" section should be setup for the Main FOH. I am using a DL 16S and CH 7 & 8 are for the main outputs. So therefore, the XLR7 and XLR8 should be designated Main L and Main R, correct? I am getting a signal out of the channel I have mic connected to but was not getting any signal out of the Main fader channel. Am I on the correct track? Thank you.

      @user-jx3jp3gb4x  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@davidleungaxiom3491 All Mackie DL mixers have the choice of two different sources for each input. The default factory setting for the A source is the XLR inputs. The default factory setting for the B source is the USB inputs.
      If you want to have the audio from a PC routed to inputs on the DL mixer, you need to first make sure that the Mackie DL is the sound source on the PC.
      When the PC is connected to the DL mixer with a USB cable, the PC most likely uses USB 1 and USB 2.
      Open the Master Fader routing page, there you can route whatever USB channels that the PC is using, to whatever channels you want on the DL mixer.

    Great videos, one question with routing and creating a Stereo aux send, if i assign aux 8 to aux 7 do i need to still run two XLR cables into a single headphone amp? or do i need to purchase a new headphone amp with 2 inputs?
    Many thanks!

    • @user-jx3jp3gb4x
      @user-jx3jp3gb4x  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Roy, you can not assign aux 8 to aux 7, however, you can "link" the master faders of aux 7 and aux 8 together, that way they become one fader that controls two audio channels, hence a stereo aux. If you want a stereo mix for in ears, which is what it sounds like you are trying to set up, then yes, you will need two XLR cables connected to 7/8 respectively and those two cables, 7-left and 8-right will connect to a stereo headphone amp. I hope that is not confusing and helps. :) click on the bottom of the aux master where the channel names/icon is and you will see link 7 over 8. Typically in pro audio, odd numbers are left, and even numbers are right.

    Probably totally un related question to this video, but does the trim affect the recording? Can the trim cause the recording to clip? Or does it just affect foh and monitors?

    • @user-jx3jp3gb4x
      @user-jx3jp3gb4x  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This will take some time to explain but here goes... In Master Fader, there is a Gain and Trim slider widget, thingy :)
      First I will explain how these two sliders work with a DL32R, not a DL1608. The red "Gain" slider is the proper slider to be used to adjust the channel input's sensativity of the incoming audio signal. The green "Trim" slider should always be left untouched and sitting at zeo dB. The Trim slider will adjust volume but it should never be used for that purpose. If you need more volume from one fader, it would be best to first make sure that the Gain level is at least hitting yellow and if it is, you could always open that channel's compressor and set the threshold to zero dB (all the way to the right), Ratio all the way to the left, Attack all the way to the left (fast), Release all the way to the left 50.ms and then you can raise the Gain slider at the bottom of the compressor, this will increase the output volume of that channel. With the settings I described above, there will be no compression. The green "Trim" slider's real purpose is to adjust the incoming "digital" level from let's say a USB hard drive playing back a multi-track recording made on the DL32R, or perhaps any other digital signal like Dante or a connected computer playing tracks into the DL32R. Now for the DL1608... Since the DL1608 was introduced as a budget iPad mixer, it was not feasible to include "recallable mic preamps" so Mackie chose to give the user analog knobs on the mixer to adjust the input gain. When Mackie re-designed Master Fader to be used with both the DL1608 and DL32R they decided that the green Trim slider could in fact be used to raise the level of a vocalist without the need of walking up to the stage where the DL1608 mixer was to twist a Gain pot. This of course is not the proper way to adjust real gain, but it is a band-aid approach to save the soundguy from having to go to the stage. Since the DL1608 does not have any digital inputs or outputs like the DL32R, there was no need for the green slider, but Mackie chose to leave it to alter the volume as a last resort. So, the answer to your question, using a DL32R to record with it's multi-track recording feature, the green slider does not affect the recording volume at all. Naturally, the red Gain slider does. I hope that is clear, Dan

    Have you made a video specifically on how to set the Reverb and Delay in the main mix and in the monitor mix? Thanks

      @user-jx3jp3gb4x  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dave, I did a video explaining many of the features of the reverbs and delay in Master Fader 4.5.3 and while some of the features look different in Master Fader 5 the same applies. I can not tell you how you need to set. your effects without being there. Just like every input that can be heard in the many monitor mix outputs so can the effects.

    Hi Dan, I just went through all your tutorials. Thanks for making these! I missed a section about using the Matrix function in the DL32R. Is there a reason for that?

    • @user-jx3jp3gb4x

      thank you for watching those tutorials, I trust you gained something from them. You are correct, I did not explain the Matrix mixes, Matrix mixes are only available on the DL32R. I will soon create some new tutorials for Master Fader 5.1 when it is released to the public. Matrix mixes is one of the things I do need to cover in those new tutorials. Thank you for bringing that to my attention :) Dan

    Is the source for the talkback the mic in the iPad or does one have to use an XLR input and a wireless mic?

    • @user-jx3jp3gb4x
      @user-jx3jp3gb4x  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kent, it would be so cool if the iPad's mic could be routed to the mixer via Apple's Airplay but sadly no. If a talkback is necessary, your best option is (as you guessed), a wireless mic. The Mackie DC16 Axis control console has an XLR talkback mic on the rear and with the default DANTE routing is already assigned.

    I’m a little confused about the routing for your sub cabs. Using aux 11 are you saying that xlr 11 & 12 inputs become outputs for the subs ?

    • @user-jx3jp3gb4x
      @user-jx3jp3gb4x  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, whether you have one sub or twenty they should all get one audio source (mono). I believe the reason you are confused is because you probably have a sub on each side with a full range speaker on top. I am having to assume everything here because you didn't inform me about your gear so I am having to second guess your question. If your top speakers and sub/s are powered and the tops are connected to an output on the subs then I understand your confusion. If that is how they are connected you should seriously consider not using that method. Each top speaker gets a connection from the mixer's left and right main outputs respectively. They do not get their connection from the subs. The sub/s get a single XLR output from the mixer, and if you have more than one sub, a standard XLR cable will "daisy-chain" to the other sub. The subs get a single mono output from the mixer and only sounds that have low frequency content are sent to that "sub" output. This allows the luxury of having complete control of the subs and things like vocals, electric guitar, cymbals, snare drum, etc DO NOT go to the subs. Popping Ps and such should never be allowed to go to the subs. Connecting the speakers this way obviously allows us to roll off the low end from the top cabinets which are not good at reproducing low end anyway. Do a google search for aux fed subs. :) The aux send that you use for the subs should always be set to "post" fader.

    Is Input B in the routing screen used to redirect channels in order to economize hard drive space when recording? When setting up to record, it asks you how many tracks, but not which ones specifically. Let's say there's a microphone on channel 1 and a guitar on channel 17. If I want just those two channels, I have to record all channels between 1 and 17 as well. If I route channel 17 to USB 2, and then select to record 2 channels, will this solve my problem?

    • @user-jx3jp3gb4x
      @user-jx3jp3gb4x  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi J,
      the answer for question one, NO.
      The answer for your last question, YES.
      The Input B section of the routing screen lets you choose which inputs you want connected to Input B of any particular channel, which could be XLR input, USB input from the connected USB drive or laptop, it could be Dante if you have a DC16 connected to it. Basically, each channel of Master Fader has two available choices for an audio source, kind of like mic/line in the old days. A simple tap of the "B" button in the center of the recording screen (channel input) instantly switches ALL 32 input channels to their "B" input. Tapping the "A" button instantly switches ALL 32 inputs from inputs "B" to inputs "A".
      If you do not want to waste a bunch of hard drive space recording a bunch of channels between 1 and 17 you will need to go to the routing screen and choose the USB tab across the top. You know,,,, Mic Pre, Oscillator, Input A, Input B, "USB". Across the top are the USB channels for recording. They need to be connected to a source, so in your specific case, you would want USB 1 (top) connected with the a big white dot to Mic Pre 1 along the left side. That will get you channel 1 recorded into channel 1 of the USB recording device. If you want XLR 17 to be recorded into channel 2 of the USB recording device then you need to connect USB 2 (top) with a big white dot to Mic Pre 17. That will give you a two channel recording with your mic on CH 1, and the guitar on channel two.

      I am a little confused at what you are not seeing on your iPad... perhaps you are using a new DL16S or DL32S, if that's the case, you are using Master Fader 5.0 and that is why it looks different. Hopefully soon, Master Fader 5.1 will be available and I will be making a few new tutorials explaining the new features that will be available in 5.1

    Can I use the Monitor jacks or the Aes output as monitor outputs? If so, how do I control them?

    • @user-jx3jp3gb4x
      @user-jx3jp3gb4x  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume you are talking about a DL32R. You can route any mono mix to each of the two "Monitor" jacks that are located on the front of the DL32R. You would use the routing screen with the "Output" tab chosen (green) and then route let's say (mix 4 to "Monitor L") and (mix 12 to "Monitor R"). You could also create a stereo monitor mix with let's say mix 5 and 6, and route those to the two "Monitor" jacks. The AES/EBU XLR connector is a two channel "digital" output and CAN NOT be used as the other analog XLR connections, it must be connected to a piece of gear that has an AES/EBU input. Some IEM units have such a connector, and it is convenient to connect just one XLR cable from the AES/EBU XLR jack on the front panel of the DL32R, and the other end of the cable to the IEM AES/EBU input.

      Aux is an abbreviation for auxiliary but most manufacturers of digital mixers use the term mix instead, but yes, Aux, Mix whatever you want to call it.

      the DL1608 is the least expensive mixer in Mackie's "DL" line of digital "wireless iPad" mixers. I believe that the DL1608 does NOT have the routing features.
