Thank you so much for coming back. I have been craving for some tasteful and informative Mikrotik contents for a while since you disappeared. I wish you all the best for your job hunting. Cheers!
Glad to hear you left that shithole and are safe. I see " South Africa collapsing/doomed" type videos almost every day on my YT frontpage. I was traveling with Map lite once, left it in Florida, ran Wireguard on it, connected to it from a plane while flying to New York, amazing how VPN on such tiny weak device on plane's wifi is still faster than austrian VDSL.
@@TheNetworkBerg yeah although Mikrotik devices are flexible and all, it is not well recognized by the big companies, plus it falls under the mid-tier to cheaper side of things.
As much I like Mikrotik the GL.iNet products are cheaper and better for this purpose, Myself, yeah I will use Mikrotik but most people I know, don't know and don't want to learn how to configure a Mikrotik device, they want plug and play. Mikrotik should have several wizards of configurations for people just to apply them, until then, this kind of devices will be only for a niche of nerds like us. Thanks for the video and welcome back.
I always travel with a HAP. One interface for connecting to the hotel's wifi and one for me to connect my devices to. I have a VPN-tunnel to my home router (public static IP) with a default route through it, so all services will think I'm back home. My kids have a separate virtual wifi with some limitations (dns-control to force safe-search, kids-mode for TH-cam etc).
I've been using hAP ax lite LTE as my travel router and I love it. Great little device. 2.4 GHz wifi is spot on for me, honestly with LTE6 you get 300 Mbps speeds in theory so there really isn't need for faster wifi IMHO. I started to replace my wap lte with this. Happy to see you back 😊
Hope you enjoy the vacation! I think it's really cool to have these smaller routers which can be powered by USB and fit in your pocket is really awesome and gives you so much extra tools and toys even when away. Looking forward to getting my own hAP ax Lite the next time we also have a vaction, but for now I will keep using my hAP Ax3 even though it is a bit bigger.
Hi; I presently have a Hex and would like to purchase a MT AX2 to connect back to my Hex while travelling. The question is some hotels require you to access a website and then input a Username “and” Password (on a laptop for e.g) before being able to access the internet. How do I go about doing this on a AX2.
I think map is the best travel companion you lte you can use a small usb modem also or conect you phone to usb in map and use as a modem its really nice
Nice video, can you suggest any security measures (configuration) in case the router is lost, how can we protect our remote networks or restrict access to our networks through the travel router when it falls to wrong hands. Is there a configuration that first checks for identity access?
With some scripting that could be doable, but a lot of extra user effort. I would at a baseline suggest device hardening like adding RSA keypairs to actually log into the router for management. You could also add specific firewall rules on either your VPN gateway or on the MT itself to restrict exactly what and how things can be accessed from this travelling router. So maybe cut down on only specific ports and protocols on the remote networks you need access to and should the device become lost immediately revoke whatever VPN access it has at the VPN gateway by terminating the session, disabling the VPN user or disabling the VPN tunnel interface associated with the device. Here is a basic video on device hardening for MikroTik: th-cam.com/video/d39IvN70Eb4/w-d-xo.html
True, that should be possible as well. Which is why networking in general is always so amazing because there are many ways to achieve the desired outcome.
Yes this actually works quite well if you put the virtual ap into the bridge so there's DHCP on it. The only limitation is max speeds because one radio now does two jobs. Speed maxed out at around 25mbps for me even with a 100mbps internet connectivity on the main WIFI. So if you're after more speed than that Dual band would be the way. For my use case 25mbps is good for everything I need inside the private network. @TheNetworkBerg - Welcome back 🙂
It uses the FG621-EA modem for LTE, whether or not it supports universal sims I do not know, I would suggest talking to someone at Mikrotik sales or a distributor directly to confirm before buying one if you want to use a universal sim. I've got a work in progress on a HapAc2 and 3. My goal is a all in one travel router. A USB C to DC barrel adaptor should. In a nutshell I have: Wan - eth1 and wlan1v1 2.4G Lan - eth 2-4, wlan2v1 5G. IoT/guest - eth5 and wlan1v2 2.4G

To where did you move?
To the United Kingdom
A quality usb 5v to 12v 1a cable is nice to run a Hap Ac2 or 3. 2amps is ideal for the ac3.

Is there an easy way to connect a router to a public network with a captive portal?
Thank ya. I have watched most of your videos.
Will need to test this out for myself, but my gut tells me no, though maybe it is possible with some scripting involved.

You could still to create a virtual wireless interface and use over wifi without need a cable.
True, that should be possible as well. Which is why networking in general is always so amazing because there are many ways to achieve the desired outcome.
3:48 untrue, create virtual AP interface in AP bridge mode to broadcast WLAN while your main wlan interface is in station mode.
Thanks, I have added information to the pinned comment regarding a "Caravan Wireless Setup" that people can use if they only have a single radio.
