  • Kumamoto Castle, a much loved landmark for over 400 years, was extensively damaged in 2016 by a major earthquake. When restoration work began, a serious problem was soon encountered - how to recreate its traditional tiled roofs. Tiles made of fired clay are excellent insulators, but each tile is slightly different, potentially causing gaps. Tilers fix this by chiseling away a few millimeters, but for the castle, this was a huge task involving tens of thousands of tiles. We’ll see how the mighty efforts of these artisans have brought hope and revived spirits in the region.

I love the different voices the narrator gives the people speaking. Next time I hit Japan, I will try to check out this castle.

Another great video. However, previously you did a video on using titanium as an alternative material to traditional clay to make roof tiles. In that video you mentioned a lot of advantages to using titanium instead. I wonder why they didn't use it instead? Unfortunately I can't find the video. A lot of your older videos are very difficult to find. The title of the video was "Titanium Tiles for Temple Roofs"

If you are restoring something, you have to use the same materials (and sometimes even the exact same methods) in order to get it back to the original state. Titanium slates would be updating, or modernising it (which isn't a bad thing) but the aim here is to restore.

I can't believe the roofer man inspected and chiseled every tile of 4,000 piece by piece!
Kids these days in Westernized nations will need to learn patience and determination in work from the Japanese.
