What is grammatical gender? (Tips for Welsh Learners)

- If you're learning Welsh, you're probably a native speaker of English, which is one of the only European languages that doesn't have grammatical genders, but Welsh does!
In this video I explain what grammatical gender REALLY IS to help you get your head around the concept and make it easier for you to learn the actual rules later.
I also give you some tips and tricks on how to learn, record, and memorise the gender of Welsh words.
I include comparisons to other European languages and some general insights from linguistics.

I apologise for using such traditional colours to represent masculine and feminine. I think colour-coding can be quite useful when classifying things during language learning and, since learners are having to acquire a new system of classification, it makes it easier if the colour coding uses the "familiar" colours.
The same in Irish/Gaeilge.

French speakers immediately correct each other when someone use the wrong gender. It's not rude or mean, it's an habit we have from our childhood. So don't be offended if someone underline your mistake.
Pas forcément, on peut aussi donner la liberté aux gens de se tromper, un apprenant devrait avoir un espace dans lequel il ne serait pas tout le temps obligé d'être sur le qui-vive ! Je trouve que c'est un raccourci un peu facile d'étendre ce trait à tous les locuteurs du Français, je suis francophone et je ne corrige pas forcément quelqu'un à chaque fois qu'il ou elle fait une erreur de ce type ! Il y a des moments opportuns et des manières de le faire.
@@henerebordes3089 Les gens ne sont pas en sucre, et ils rencontreront forcément des gens qui les corrigeront avec ou sans ménagement. Alors autant qu'ils s'y préparent.
@@julienboyer Oui Julien, nous sommes fait de chair et d'os ! Et de la chair et des os dans la tronche ça fait plus mal que du sucre, mais visiblement t'es un dur à cuire pour parler comme ça ! Maintenant, des gens qui corrige les autres sans ménagement et de manière systématique ça s'appelle des cons. Si ça te sied d'en être un, moi non. La connerie française qu'elle reste en France, le monde francophone lui ne se limite pas au frontière de la seule France continentale ! Il y a d'autres coin de France dans le monde, et ils ne veulent pas nécessairement voir s'appliquer une telle réputation à eux.
@@henerebordes3089 Hahaha Ca prêche la bienveillance mais ça n'hésite pas à insulter les autres de con. Pas très cohérent, mais bon, typique du progressisme. Apprendre une langue étrangère, c'est sortir de sa "safe zone" et se confronter au monde. Si les gens se vexent pour des bêtises pareilles, les interactions seront difficiles, je crains.

Spot on re. the learning of gender. When I teach Welsh to people I never use those dreadful old lists labelled ‘’masc nouns” or “fem nouns”.
They’re meaningless. What’s best is to keep playing with the word e.g with cadair you’d be playing on agreement words “Wyt ti’n hoffi’r gadair yna?” “Cadair fach yw hi” Mae’r gadair yna yn fwy na’r gadair hon.” etc etc. That way the learner learns the gender by default because they are making connections as to how the word behaves and how it affects the words around it.

Actually it's one of the things I like about Welsh though I'm not sure what it says about me.
Good suggestion about learning nouns together with a mutating adjective. I'll use that.

I like to pair the colours black or white, or the adjectives small or large with Welsh nouns as a way of remembering gender.

It is absolute nonsense that any language feels the need to gender its nouns. Now, having both definite and indefinite articles, that's an absolute must. Strong and weak past tenses, that's 100% a mandatory feature of any respectable language. And I do think it's important that your pronouns should have nominative and oblique forms, while it's not necessary for the nouns themselves. But noun gender, that's just frippery.
