  • Animals have always fascinated people for their unique characteristics and have always been very prominent on every culture
    Since the icons we see on our coins are nothing but a reflection of our culture, they also show up very frequently on ancient coins. Today, lets go on a numismatic zoo trip and see how the ancient peoples depicted animals on their coinage.

    My collection is primarily animals and plants, with Akragas being one of my favorite cities due to all the critters on them!

    I love animal coins.
    I have the same hemiobol, mine is not in perfect condition but it's still one of my favourites.

    Great video, as always! I love to improve my personal bestiary in coins, and in my collection are now present 7 species of mammals (4 ungulates, 2 carnivorous, 1 cetacean), 2 species of birds, 1 fish, 1 crustacean and 1 insect. And it's a very artistic zoo!

    What kind of animals ancient engravers chose to depict and how they chose to show them speak volume about ancient relationships between humans and animals (mostly wild, strangely, after millennia of domestication), just like the depiction of their gods shows of their cosmology, understanding of nature and spirituality. I love animals on ancient coins because they give me an insight view of the ancient mind, a direct connection to ancient awe.

    Great video, informative as always :-) I'd like to give a honorary mention to the 'Zoo series' of emperor Gallienus (253-268 AD). As the name suggests, this series of coins feature a pantheon of animals on the reverse, including mythological ones (Pegasus, Capricorn, Centaur, etc)

      Indeed! Its a very interesting series. Also, apparently this particular issue was used o pay for troops on the frontier, so there's the extra appeal of knowing there was a good likelihood these coins were help by legionaries.

    Nice video! The series struck by Philip the Arab for the Secular Games in AD 248 are also interesting, depicting a coin with an animal from each part of the empire

    Very nice video. Just a small correction, the reverse of Probus antonin. it´s spelled Adventus, not Aduentus.

      I believe I do know a bit of latin. Romans did not have the letter V, therefore any V you see on coins needs to be pronounced with a sound that is a mix between a U and a "W" in , therefore I believe this is not a mistake :)

      @@ClassicalNumismatics If you can get a hold of some fakes, and do detailed comparisons between authentic/fake examples of the same coin that would be fantastic.

    I .have wondered why half of a horse or cow is depicted, and why only the front or hind end?

    • @ClassicalNumismatics
      @ClassicalNumismatics  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      In some cases, it is as simple as the fact the coin die is too small to receive the entire design on it. Ephesus for example has many issues where we can see a deer. On some of the smaller coins, only the forepart can be seen.

    Great video! I own that hemiobol. It is by far the smallest coin in my collection! If I had to carry those around I would surly lose them!
