    One of the greats. Tetrazzini's voice was also much bigger than perhaps we realize.

    One music critic called Tetrazzini "a vocal virtuoso," and nearly all of her recordings confirm this. There is a brilliance, excitement, and joy in her recordings that only a handful of other artists possessed. At the same time, she was accused of an infantile sound in her medium register, which she actually improved over time. Her lower register was, according to William Henderson, "marred by tremolo," although recordings do not reveal this. Adelina Patti named Tetrazzini her legitimate successor, although, true to form, Patti still believed that no other singer matched her own vocalism, at least among sopranos. Sutherland, herself a vocal virtuosa par excellence, admired both Tetrazzini and Galli-Curci, and apparently for good reason.
