- My shadow, my best buddy, my little boy, Merlin died on Christmas day and my heart is broken. I haven't wanted to do anything except sleep since he died, but today I thought I'd get up and try to do some stitching, just a little. Part of the process of grief is being gentle with oneself. So that's what I'm doing my best to do and to honor the feelings as they arise.

After graduating from Parsons School of Design, I began my career in fashion design and freelanced both in New York City, as well as London. I designed hand knits for Elle Magazine and was the editor of the Hand Knit Page before hand knits fell out of fashion in the early 1990's and the page was discontinued. In 2008 I launched my jewelry design business, designing fine jewelry in 18 & 20 Kt Gold with gemstones that I hand select for each piece. Several awards and numerous write ups & interviews later, I rediscovered hand stitching and my life took another turn, eventually leading me to improvisational stitching, which I teach workshops on: arianezurcher.com/workshops/
I was awarded an artist's residency in Orquevaux, France and began playing with paint on the fabric pieces I was creating, which rekindled my love of painting, abstract art and collage.
I sold my first felt embroidered xmas tree ornaments to a small shop in Northern California when I was 16 years old, sold a painting that same year and never looked back. And while I've had detours along the way: had two children, worked at an advertising agency, got into acting in my early 20's, published numerous articles for various magazines and wrote for the Huffington Post, I have always created in some form. Art is my love and remains so to this day.
I love inspiring and encouraging others to create as well and to find their voice through whatever medium suits them. So come with me as I explore the creative process in all its varied forms, strengthening and finding my voice, while learning to strengthen and find yours as well!

I know that when my time here on Earth is finished I will be greeted by family and friends and that includes my fur children. I miss them now but I take comfort in knowing that I will see and be with them again

So sorry to hear you have lost your beautiful boy Merlin . cats are such special animals. We lost our cat Tilly at 20 it was such a huge loss but we were so blessed to have her in our lives. Cats chose us and we became there butlers tending to their every need. Stitching does help us heal. Sending hugs. Xxxxx💙

I'm 70 now and have had a Yorkie for ten years. He is my friend and I love him dearly. He sleeps next to my tummy or behind my knees. Life without him would be so hard. This is grief that never goes away. It doesn't come as often and the hurt doesn't last as long but the loss is always just as great as it was in the beginning. I pray that your healing is quick and you can move through this loss with the help and support of friends and family.

I'm so sorry you lost this little soul. I lost my 10 year old black cat, Man-Man early this October 2023. I cried so hard, I made myself sick. I know exactly what you're going through. 💔😢

They are part of our family...they take our hearts and when we loose them it's devastating. My pooch Lola decided to lay somewhere and came into the house in a manic run round the house..and yes she had been bitten by ants had an allergic reaction so down to the vet we went for the second time this year..for an antihistamine injection..the point is they are your family they give unconditional love and you will do anything for them. Yes, know how you feel. Lost my Mr Mickey Man about 3 years ago and still can't get him out of my mind. Thought about getting a kitty but because of my elderly age am afraid he would end up in a shelter when I pass. So I remain lonely for the love an animal provides. My heart goes out to you Arianna

So sorry, I can relate lost my brother, my favorite dog and my mother all within the last two years. The grief is the price we pay for experiencing unconditional love. I found time heals and I celebrated their lives. They are always with you, look for them, and you will notice small hints of special things that they did. God speed to your darling Merlin.

When you lose your fur baby, the pain is real. My art helped me process my grief and I ended up making a portrait of my sally with wings. I found that it hurt more to be without a fur baby and ended up adopting two kittens a month later. Each person has to grief in their own way and time. Be kind to yourself

I know your pain Ariane. I lost my Son July 25 2022 of a brain aneurysm. He was 35. Some may say it's not the same but when you love another living being with your whole heart the loss is just as real. Your heart is still broken.

Oh my dear Arlene, I know what you are going through. We lost one of our doggies the day after Christmas, Her name was Zoey, we still had her brother Oliver. On April 13th, we lost him too. We had them both for 16 years. I know so well the aches of losing someone you love. I still so not feel I will ever get over losing them. They were like our children. I think I slept for 3 days when my black cat Angus had to be euthanized at 18 yrs old. I always said he was a dog in a kitty suit. So much personality, he was my companion, not my pet, not my baby. It's been 2 1/2 years and I still miss him so. You were brave to come on and do this.

I knew better, but didn't try to dissuade him. Merlin was Merlin. Unique and beautiful and such a wonderful companion. This breaks my heart for you .... and me....losing our fur babies is one of the most difficult times and it sure does take a lot of time to partially heal. We still grieve for all of our "babies" that we have had to let go over the years. My sincere thoughts and know you are not alone on this!

Animals are beautiful souls and they are meant to help us through living on this Earth they come at the right time and leave this earth when they are supposed to leave I believe. It doesnt make things easy but you have their memories and special bond that will always be there in your heart and his I hope that makes things a little easier for your sorrow. I believe what Merlin accomplished with you was his job now its time to move on and possibly in the future another completely different kitty will come along for different reasons. I lost my Gorgeous Sid few years ago now but I have never forgotten his gorgeous personality there will never be another Sid but there will be other kittys to help us move on slowly. Time is all that helped me. Also know that you gave your pet the best life and he knew how much love the two of you had. God has his way of healing each of us. And I so so love your videos. Your wonderful in them. You look beutiful and have such a sweet way about you. I knew I shouldn't have watched as I"m crying with you. I get you and your loss, I've had and lost 2 dogs, and 10 cats over the years and it never ever gets easier. I have 2 little boys now and one is pure black like Merlin. It is just to hard and heart breaking and yes those who don't have furbabies don't get it. I’m so so sorry you lost Merlin. I know exactly what it’s like to lose a fur baby. They weave their little way into your heart so easily that you know you love them, but you have no idea just how much you love them until they’re gone. That love goes far deeper than anything other than a child. That is exactly what it’s like to lose a pet, like losing a child. You need time to grieve, so don’t push yourself. Just embrace your grief and let it happen. You will see things that remind you of him or his little mannerisms and your heart will break over and over again, but before you know it, you can just laugh or giggle and talk about the crazy little ways he amused you all.
Take care my friend and just let it be. Then come back. Another good way to make it less painful, believe it or not, is to go ahead and get another baby. They bring such joy and so many need good homes. You aren’t replacing Merlin, just the pain from his passing. Hugs my friend

I’m so sorry Ariane and I totally get how you’re feeling - I’ve been there and it’s pretty hard for a while. They become members of the family and find their way permanently in our hearts. Right there with you. Lost my bubby recently too. I hope you know the grief is real, it matters, and he knows you loved him so much. You wouldn't be feeling this so deeply if the love wasn't real. You did EVERYTHING right, you did everything in love and not selfishness. You even released him in love- surrounded by love. In time there will be a little face that's been brought to your world. Please don't ignore it for fear of replacement guilt or not wanting to say goodbye. Sometimes the little faces are lead to people who showed they earned the love. Sometimes the goodbyes are too hard to do again, and thats ok too. But leave room for chance encounters and knowing the cat flap in our hearts, well life and live finds a way. We had 3 dogs and 1 cat. I told my husband that at our age, I couldn’t go through having another pet. I’m so sorry ARIANE!

I think you’re brave sharing. And I’m so, so sorry for your loss.
I’ve been in emergency with my cat Amelia twice this week. I thought I would have to make a final decision about whether she was going to pull through, what is the kindest for her.
It is devastating. I fully acknowledge the grief you’re feeling.
They’re with us by our side in the crafting room bearing witness and even though I have a reprieve for a little while at least, with twice a day injections, I can’t imagine how hard it will hit.

My deep and profound sympathies on the loss of Merlin 💔💔💔 Many, many of our pets were sustaining souls for us through the pandemic. It makes our bond with them even stronger. We know at the start this day will come and we do it anyway… I don’t know why. I have had my heart shattered by the loss of pets in ways that human loss will never be. 💕💕🐈⬛💕💕
You know it's so strange... I lost my mother just over a year ago and then my dear cousin who was a father figure to me and who gave me away at my wedding just a month ago and now Merlin and the loss feels too much. Too many, too much, not enough time to process. It's as though this last death has devastated me beyond the pale. A kind of final blow and I wonder if I will ever recover, though I know I will. Others have been through far worse. It helps to hear from those who've have gone through this and worse as it's a reminder to just put one foot slowly in front of the other, and to follow their lead. Thank you for helping lead the way for me.
@@ArianeZurcher212 I had significant grief counselling after my mother died. I was her sole caregiver and she had dementia and colon cancer. Here are two things I learned … 1 - grief is grief and pain is pain. No matter how we came by it or what the circumstances… we are allowed to feel what we feel. It is not a comparative state or competitive sport. We are not well served if we compare our pain and grief 💕💕💕 2 - our relationship does not end. It changes. We can still talk to, write to, remember, love and have present with us those beings who are dear to us and have passed. I talk to my mom a lot and laugh with her regularly over things I know she would have enjoyed. Thinking of you and wishing you every comfort. 💕💕💕

I am just so sorry for you. It was only a few months ago that I had the opportunity to take care of my son’s two Persian cats. Before that I was actually sort of scared of cats and I didn’t know what they were like at all. Well it didn’t take long for me to realize how absolutely sweet that these two cats are. They gave me such joy I couldn’t believe it. When it came time for them to go home I was very sad and lonesome. I really miss them and I had only been taking care of them a few weeks. Since then I have taken care of them several times when my kids were away. Each time I had them I came to love them more and more. I could never understand how people could love their cats but after taking care of these two cats I can really see how they can become a real part of your family. Now when my kids come over to visit I ask them to bring the kitties. Before my son got the two cats he has now he had another cat and when this cat died he was just devastated. I have never ever seen him so sad. It’s only know that I realize how much he love that kitty. All this being said, I really Think I have some idea how sad you are feeling and how much you miss Your sweet boy. I hope in time that you will feel better and just have lots of sweet memories of him. Again I just feel so sorry for you and my heart truly goes out to you. Sending love, Susan
