These designs are actually perfect. Looking at the original boss characters' designs, most of them have the same body structure, making them too samey, but those limits aren't present with these redesigns, giving them all a unique look. Plus you can tell they had a lot of fun making some of these, like Snakeman.
although not every design is a hit for me the art style itself is beautiful, vibrant colors and easy to read. this is what real megaman is in my eyes, this collection is a treat that brings back good memories 😄
Went into this knowing exactly what most of the ratings would be, especially Shadow EXE, hahaha. A little sad he didn't hit up the 7ths aside Shade, but it's understandable.
The reason for Proto Man, Roll, and Bass's drastic redesigns were that they take elements from X characters. ProtoMan.EXE is a combination of Proto Man and Zero. Roll.EXE is a combination of Roll and Alia. Bass.EXE is a combination of Bass and Sigma.
I don’t really see much of anything of Sigma in Bass’ design. The cloak was more of a general common “dark mysterious” design concept. His actual body is actually fairly similar to Classic Bass but the dark energy and the cloak make him look so much cooler.
I know this is all subjective but I couldn't disagree with the majority of this video more. The BN designs go SO hard in almost every capacity especially considering how well they're adapted to this theme of being computer AIs. They seriously nailed the aesthetic .
Given a lot of these had expanded roles resulting in wildly different personalities, I feel like a lot of the designs are way better in context. Especially TopMan. He's custom made by an old man who who likes tops but wants to impress his kid who gravitates more towards netnavis.
I think reviewing these designs while not understanding their story importance and reason for looking the way they do kinda undermines the effort put into the designs. Love a lot of them and they make complete sense in their respective games.
@@heardofrvb In the Gamecube side story, which isnt included in the Legacy collection but is still a canon part of the story. I always prefered these designs over the original because a lot of the original designs can be summed up as 'Guy in jumpsuit'. It wasn't until they got to the later games that they were able to expand it and give the robot masters a bit more distinct designs. Here, everyone is unique in their own way. They all vary in size from the towering Knightman.exe to the tiny Iceman.exe and many of them retained some of their original attacks. Not every NetNavi is an antagonist as well. Gutsman.exe goes the entire series as a rival to Megaman.exe but generally helps. The most colorful character of the series, Match, constantly changes his NetNavi and sides. He appears in every game except for 5 operates Fireman.exe, Heatman.exe and Flamman.exe and will either be a random NPC, a villain or just some guy trying to find his way.
Ive never played this series before nor did I ever grow up around it all but i fucking LOVE these designs, theyre all suuuper imaganitive and charming. I really need to grab a copy of the collection and finally dive in
I really liked how crazy they went with some of the designs and how much character it gives them compared to their original NES counterparts which for the most parts were just simple tokusatsu villains. But some of them are a bit overdesigned and jaring like Metal Man for example
There was a boss design contest for Mega Man 2-8 rosters, Battle Network 2 (GateMan), 3 Navis each in BN 3-6, and Kung Foo Kid & Moon Destroyer for Star Force 2 & 3 respectively.
What is killin this review for me is Max's lack of understanding that their not robot masters or reploids their netnavi's. Virtual bodies in the net which is why they are slimmer and some more human looking. I did enjoy his banter though as well as the video 😂
Fun fact: this Rush design was supposed to be for Legends, but they couldn't fit him in, not to mention the series got canned two games and one spin-off in, so they recycled it for Battle Network.
Loved this. I hope Max does more videos like this! Even if the die-hards can't take anyone having negative feelings towards something they like. I grew up playing BN too guys, I get it- but let the man say his piece! Of course, he will be based on his own aesthetic preferences. Isn't that the whole point of a video like this?
In the anime, Metalman was called Heavymetalman. It's more of a mouthful, but I think it's also kinda badass, especially since the saws on his shoulders are actually his weapons and they are literally just GIANT SAWBLADES.
Talking as someone with no experience with the mega man Battle Network side. some of the desings are cool as hell maybe is MAx being a grampa but something like Heatman is an 10/10 for me. I love the wacky shit
I'm the opposite: I grew up on MMBN so when I see the old Classic designs most of the time I go "wow that's boring". Like I get it, its not my era. But its amusing to see someone from that era react to the MMBN designs.
I love Max but I feel like every once in a blue moon he'll talk about a game outside of the fighting game genre and share an opinion I COULDN'T disagree more with😂
What I personally find cool about those designs is that they are basically handled by the team, that does design for mainline series now. So looking at them we can kinda grasp what Mega Man character designs would look like in 12 and further games, or in that one leaked "big budget Mega Man title" that they've been working on for years. Even if I don't quite love Battle Network or Star Force series, they surely were made with a lot of love for classics and that's what matters.
Taste is subjective and all that, but slandering Roll's 2nd best design (before Legends), Elecman, Heatman, Topman, Snakeman, & Toadman's best designs, Skullman's pretty good design (although I prefer the original), no mentions of Desertman, Groundman, Swordman, or Zero (I know he skipped over the ones he didn't know, but still), ranking Iceman's worst design as one of the best when Aquaman & Blizzardman are right there? why am i still here? just to suffer?
I enjoyed your critiques on each robot master from Battle Network. As someone who was first exposed to the MegaMan series through BN, it’s interesting to see how much my opinions vary from yours. Really liked the video though! Glad you gave the Battle Network series the exposure it deserves

The fact that Max disliked most of these redesigns, or at least thought they were worse than the originals, doesn't really surprise me. This very much is that era of Japanese animation that he generally doesn't like. And as another commenter put it, these designs had a much different focus, more on powers and transformations than the actual "man" part. So it can create that feeling of something being too traditional yet too different at the same time, which Max seemed to keep flipping back and forth on. Though, it also doesn't help that Max doesn't really have any nostalgia for the series. As awesome as Max can be, he tends to be the "stay in your lane" type of person. "Wood Man what did they do to you?"
You mean the Wood Man that was basically some dude inside a tree trunk? That Wood Man?
Yes, funny how that looks better right?
Max referencing Persona is probably the closest we’ll get to him playing the series
The closet we got to him playing Persona was in Smash Ultimate. And I don’t think he ever played Joker only the stage lol
LMAO maybe one day
@@FutureMangaka2011 I feel like Max would dig the style of P5 a lot if he tried it. Persona and Yakuza are the two games I'm surprised Max hasn't delved into yet.
@@knickknack675 It's ok, he's playing Metroid. That alone is a good timeline
He did play Persona 4 Arena back in the day
Was hoping to see his reaction to the Zero redesign.
Watched it live, he thought it was cool, but he didn't pog.
No, he already saw Protoman.
@@StriderZessei Thanks for the heads up. :)
@Trise There is a legit Zero.exe design.
He saw it a LONG time ago (before he moved to his new house) with the group. And he absolutely loved Zero.EXE.
He still does and peeped it again during this stream.
*_"They did my man-wood dirty"_*

Looking forward to reading his Lolcow page on kiwi farms
Bass EXE is a 10/10 redesign.
Because someone has to:
"They did my man Wood dirty!" - Max, 2023
Huh,could this be considered a dad joke? Lol
@@tonberryhater2286 Woodman is so derpy, words can not describe it.
I really wish Capcom would make a Megaman legends collection and with legends 3 announcement for current gen consoles.
It would be the hardest to make I think which is probably why they skipped it for now to get the other projects out the way
and it would skip xbox just like battle network. I bought the 3 previous collections for my xbox to. I was so bummed out they skipped xbox.
These designs are actually perfect. Looking at the original boss characters' designs, most of them have the same body structure, making them too samey, but those limits aren't present with these redesigns, giving them all a unique look. Plus you can tell they had a lot of fun making some of these, like Snakeman.
Yeah a lot of these are extremely cool. Would love to see a couple appear in one of the crossover fighting games.
Battle Ntwork and Star force in general need to show up in more Capcom crossover material, they always pick X and Legends characters but never these
although not every design is a hit for me the art style itself is beautiful, vibrant colors and easy to read. this is what real megaman is in my eyes, this collection is a treat that brings back good memories 😄
yeah i feel like even the designs i didn't love had wonderful artwork
Went into this knowing exactly what most of the ratings would be, especially Shadow EXE, hahaha. A little sad he didn't hit up the 7ths aside Shade, but it's understandable.
Max yet again proving he doesn't know exactly what he's talking about
The reason for Proto Man, Roll, and Bass's drastic redesigns were that they take elements from X characters.
Shadowman.EXE got a 10/10 probably because he looks like Strider Hiryu.
At least he recognizes Bass.EXE is peak character design
It looks very similar to mainline Bass so I get it hehe...still looks pretty great as a NetNavi.
Max! The design of the characters matched the aesthetic they were going for. I think it was spot on! Lol
BATTLE NETWORKKK
despite the ratings being total heresy this shit was my childhood. I hope you have an amazing time with the games!
I think reviewing these designs while not understanding their story importance and reason for looking the way they do kinda undermines the effort put into the designs. Love a lot of them and they make complete sense in their respective games.
One of the redesigns Max looked at that's not in this video is, of course, Zero.EXE, which he loved. See it for yourself to get what I mean.
Zero is in the series?
@Just another ghost yeah he was a virus i think and he wanted you to destroy him. He appears in transmission network gcn
@@heardofrvb In the Gamecube side story, which isnt included in the Legacy collection but is still a canon part of the story.
I think what they did with him is kinda clever, since the Maverick virus is you know, a computer virus which is what Megaman.EXE fights all the time that's how Zero was born in this timeline, the virus gaining sentience
Bass looks SO GOOD in this
There was a boss design contest for Mega Man 2-8 rosters, Battle Network 2 (GateMan), 3 Navis each in BN 3-6, and Kung Foo Kid & Moon Destroyer for Star Force 2 & 3 respectively.
man... this gotta be the HOTTEST fucking take-video max has ever made imo LOL
god damn.. manz rated ElecMan.EXE a 4💀
What is killin this review for me is Max's lack of understanding that their not robot masters or reploids their netnavi's. Virtual bodies in the net which is why they are slimmer and some more human looking. I did enjoy his banter though as well as the video 😂
My personal favourite redesign is the Gospel virus from 2. Don't recognize him? It's Treble!
Fun fact: this Rush design was supposed to be for Legends, but they couldn't fit him in, not to mention the series got canned two games and one spin-off in, so they recycled it for Battle Network.
shouldve had a side by side with the original characters
Loved this. I hope Max does more videos like this! Even if the die-hards can't take anyone having negative feelings towards something they like. I grew up playing BN too guys, I get it- but let the man say his piece! Of course, he will be based on his own aesthetic preferences. Isn't that the whole point of a video like this?
They straight up turned Shadow Man into Strider.EXE.
In the anime, Metalman was called Heavymetalman. It's more of a mouthful, but I think it's also kinda badass, especially since the saws on his shoulders are actually his weapons and they are literally just GIANT SAWBLADES.
I actually loved the designs of Battle Network. There are some misses, but overall good designs…
Although I do admit, some a really out there. 😅
Talking as someone with no experience with the mega man Battle Network side. some of the desings are cool as hell maybe is MAx being a grampa but something like Heatman is an 10/10 for me. I love the wacky shit
@@Feroce I personally liked Protoman's design. Battle Network was my introduction to these characters. To each their own, I guess.
When you compared Elec Man to a Persona I couldn't help but feel that's...actually what they kinda are for MMBN. They aren't robots anymore.
I'm the opposite: I grew up on MMBN so when I see the old Classic designs most of the time I go "wow that's boring".
Like I get it, its not my era. But its amusing to see someone from that era react to the MMBN designs.
Bass.EXE is one of the coolest design in the series, so i'm glad he agrees *whew*
I love Max but I feel like every once in a blue moon he'll talk about a game outside of the fighting game genre and share an opinion I COULDN'T disagree more with😂
Give half these character a scarf and a sabre and the ratings would jump 10 fold
@Maximilian Dood You just skipped Tenguman.EXE Tengu Man is from Megaman 8, and Battle Network made an emphasis on the tengu design here.
He did mention that is is only familiar with the NES games so he rating just those and not 7/8.
For a redesign evaluation video, I'm baffled you didn't put the classic counterparts side by side to compare.
i usually agree with max on most of these kinds of videos but i kept being like "this guys is sick!" then max says "they ruined him 2/10" lmaoi
I love these game collections Capcom is releasing lately. You can just scroll through the menu jamming to each game’s themes or thumb through the artworks & concept art.
Never would've expected this video but as Palpatine once said, "A surprise to be sure but a welcome one"
Summoning Elec Man as a Persona
"PERSONA!" shoots self with a stun gun
Max just likes edgy designs
And his man in suits (skull man for example)
Then he should have rated the Protoman design higher.
Max: Roll's a... 3
The comments section: So you have chosen violence.
I can die happily once Legends Legacy Collection is released
Throw in Starforce as well. Those fans need their shine!
I want a Collection of all the weird spinoffs. Mega Man Soccor, Command Mission, Network Transmission, The Misadventures Of Tron Bonne, Operation Shooting Star, etc.
Kind of a trend that stuff he's unfamiliar with or hadn't grown up with usually doesn't go too well in his perspective...to put it nicely.
PharaohMan.EXE is so sick. Max is on dust
The Megaman Flash game and the Megaman NT Warrior anime are what got me into Megaman. I once owned Megaman Battle Network 5 (on the DS) & 6 (Gregar Version)
Unfortunately max has transitioned from dad to boomer with this video
This is definitely one of Max's most "polarizing" videos. Am happy he at least loves (Heavy)Metal Man!
