Prime is stronger then Megatron, and Grimlock is stronger then Prime. The only reason Prime has kept his leadership after being challanged by grimlock a few times, is that Prime is a better tactician and fighter overall, Grimlock is brute strength.
There's an episode of the cartoon when you see the Dinobots dwarfing Shockwave. It's fairly consistent with the cartoon, though I think they made Grimlock even bigger here.
If only they had this Grim in the new RID, since the show is to take place off TFP (which had the Dinobots in comic form, who in the majority of their character is based of these Dinobots)

In G1 they were a lost set of decepticons that got stranded on earth, they were then forced to take the shapes of insects due to faulty programming but in the end it was because of that faulty programming they gained the ability to turn whatever they ate into energon and thus survive. I only know this because I just went back through and watched it, G1 is so inconsistent with itself though that I don't know exactly how valid or accurate to hasbro canon this is though.
Because this isn't G1. Sorry, we all don't like it, but it's in the Aligned continuity, which is Prime, Rescue Bots and WFC/FOC. Grimlock and the other Dinobots remained on Cybertron in this continuity and Wheeljack is a loner, Drift-type guy, not the blow up in your face inventor he was in G1. Linking FOC to either continuity still brings up contradiction, but it makes much more sense in the aligned continuity. ;)

When Hasbro officially confirmed that Prime and WFC were part of the same continuity, they made the FOC to resemble more to the Prime series. It's true that Prime and FOC have a lot of similarities. However, there are a lot of differences, such as the vehicle mod of some characters: in Prime Megatron and Soundwave have jet mod, but in FOC Megatron is a tank and Soundwave some kind of truck.
I know that there are many visual differences between the games and Prime, something that bugs me. But Hasbro (not me) officially said that Prime and the games (alongside Rescue Bots, the Universe MMO and the Exodus and Exiles novels) are in the same continuity. When you play as grimlock during the game it's just straight up mayhem and carnage. Just as it should be. Mike Bay should take some notes from WOC/FOC and TF Prime. I honestly like TF prime better than G1 due to the consistent storyline. I own G1 on DVD too. Imma real fan

Understand that after the destruction of the Tower, both Shockwave and Grimlock survived.
