Hey David, the reason he specifically wrote this song for this concert is because the Giants stadium in Rutherford was going to be demolished days after this concert, hence the song title,
I was just at the concert on thursday. He performed this song. Its so good! For Bruce, you have to do Ramrod (from Barcelona 2002), Mary’s Place (from Barcelona 2002), Waiting On a Sunny Day (from really any concert), New York City Serenade (from Rome 2013), Born in the U.S.A. (From Madison Square Garden 2000), (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher (From the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary), and Kitty's Back (From Perth 2014). All amazing!
The song is about the demolition of the stadium but has references to the passage of time and life, and about courage in difficult times. A life lesson
Saw him perform this in KC in February right after we won the superbowl...he still said Giants...we all booed...his response...laughed then said.. "You have a pretty good team too too" . He knows his audience .
You hit the nail on the head. It's not a "classic" but just a really fun song to see performed, especially when you've been to a bunch of games and concerts in that stadium. The first time I saw him was there.
When the Spectrum in Philly was torn down they played this song during the demolition. Bruce actually changed the lyrics to this song to fit Philly during the last shows he played at The Spectrum. Really cool tribute to a building that was important for him!
Song is in in reference to the razing of the Meadowlands (Giants) Stadium. He played that stadium often and it was basically his hometown.
Not one of my favorite Springsteen songs. Largely because it was not up to his standard level of writing. But I also get it. This was his last concert at Giants stadium. It was going to be torn down to make room for MetLife. Giants stadium was essentially the band's backyard. It's about an hour from the Jersey Shore and even less to where Bruce Grew up (Freehold), and where he lives today (Colt's Neck and Rumson). He played two dozens shows there in front of a hometown crowd. So it was written for his biggest fans about "The Swamps of Jersey"
Yes, it's a song for the sessions band, good song and good score
Check out a performance of this from Philly...the reactions are a little different lol...like when he mentions the Giants. I was at this show and it was a great moment!

David...You should search for "Springsteen Twist & Shout" from 1988 Amnesty International concerts he did with Sting, Peter Gabriel, and Tracy Chapman. One of the coolest live videos I've ever seen. From the mass of 50,0000 in Buenos Aires, to the switch from Twist to La Bamba to the ode to James Brown with the "I can't go on" he gives at the end....Just another example of his stage presence and insane live shows. th-cam.com/video/eXvGbWO_DIk/w-d-xo.html
