There's an indie homage to Populous called "Reprisal Universe" from 2014. It's obviously very derivative, playing almost exactly like Populous 1, but I very much enjoyed it, and it does have a much bigger view area for people bothered by that in the originals. It's available on GOG and Steam. Maybe ADG Filler material?
Corinn Heathers I more recently did a review of Populous II. If the tiny view area is the only thing stopping you then Populous II may appeal to you as it doesn't have that problem. ;)
I recently played this on the Sega Genesis. I don't know if that version is just way simplified or what but I found it stupidly easy to win by sprogging like a rabbit and then doing Armageddon.
I mean, that tactic will get you through a lot of the game for sure, but this is a LONG game, even on the Genesis. By the time you reach the final levels, you need to not only do that, but you also have to play very aggressively against the AI if you want any hope of survival.
You forgot to mention that it's humanly impossible to complete. Try going to the last level (weavuspert) - the AI has like 30 followers, you have 1. It builds at lightning speed and will create a knight in no time, not to mention throwing volanoes at you when you're trying to work up to earthquake. Seriously, I don't know how they expected anyone to complete this. I still like it though, I've played it for many hours. :-)
You may want to watch my video on Populous 2 first before you make that decision... or buy BOTH of them! :B (Though probably avoid the third Populous game.) th-cam.com/video/5ZpljiAKqEw/w-d-xo.html

The tiny view area turned me off from ever playing this game when I was a kid. My opinion hasn't changed in the intervening twenty-two years.

***** I will check that out! Being relegated to a laptop incapable of handling modern games, this is a great time for me to go back in time a bit. :)

@@Pixelmusement Thanks for the recommendations! I'm gonna watch your review of the second one.
The gameboy version is sluggish and difficult to play due to the screen size.
How about powermonger, would you do a review of that? I loved that game.
Better than Populous, imho..
Wow
