    Hands down the easiest and cheapest method of breeding mice!!! Love the positive sentiment towards the feeders and the respect for the animals!

    One of the best mice breeding video's on youtube! You're one of the few who really care about the mice and take proper care of them, even tho they are feeders. :)

    This is an excellent video! I just started my first colony for my ferret and can't wait for the first litters to come (nor can Discord, as she just discovered there are mice in the kitchen she can't reach). I have the 3 drawer-wide cart similar to yours with 1 buck and 2 does in two of the drawers. I plan to use the third drawer as a grow-out for the babies. It's really awesome to see how much you care about your mice and go to such awesome lengths to ensure they're wellbeing!

    I love this video and your set-up. Well done! I actually have a shelf like this I can use for my mice that I used to use for breeding mealworms, so my system will be very cheap to build, doing it your way. I also have 1/" square hardware cloth already to make the hoppers, and I have tons of paper towel tubes. All I need now is the bedding, the food pellets, a few water bottles, a couple wheels, and some sweet breeder stock! Thanks so much for posting this!
    My cats will be so happy with a nice supply of pinkies! I recently switched them to raw food (well, one of the 2 is still in transition) and saved my male cat (the one who is in transition) from the brink of pre-diabetes and kidney issues... he had polyuria, peeing 3x the normal amount. So excited to get them a food source. Just gave my one cat thawed frozen pinkies tonight, so I am now hoping to try a small amount of breeding. Your system will make it so easy and cost-effective to get going! Thanks again!!!

    Oh wow, thank you! You have great ideas! I also read how you stun your mice thank you for that to (so much nicer), ever one tells me to hit there head on something... I just can't do it. Very new at the snake thing. Thank you again for the great houseing idea, had no idea what I was gonna do with all these little bugers.

    Great presentation in this video. Your bedside manner is fabulous. You were very informative and well-spoken! My daughter is about to start her first colony as she prepares for getting a ball python. This was certainly helpful. Good timing too as we realized today that the mouse pair she got on Saturday is already expecting. I assume the female was pregnant when we got her because she is at least 2 weeks along, just showing.

  • @pneumike1

    I made a similar setup, but I used a 5 tier drawer set that had two small drawers at the top, then took it apart and used the short supports to make an airspace between the tubs. then I wrapped screen over the support bottom/top of bins and screwed it down. this also allowed me to add an automatic watering system and do away with the water bottles.

    Let me start off by saying great informative video. I would like to ask you a question. My son has a corn snake that eats a small mouse once a week. We just moved and the closest pet store that sells live mice is pretty far away. His snake will except frozen mice (PETSMART is ridiculously over priced) however my son prefers to feed him live mice. Would breeding be feasible, my concern is I would wind up with to many mice and nothing to do with them.

    • @MegaMatilda93
      @MegaMatilda93 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can let the female(s) and male breed and have babies once, then seperate female and male. When the babies are 4 weeks old,take away them from their mother. separate the females and males and feed and raise them to wanted size then kill and freeze them. And when you need more mice/rats just let the female(s) and male breed again and then do the same thing.

    I imagine with saving you from having random deaths from pine is both the small amount, and the minimal shavings.
    From someone who used one of the bad shavings, at the time they had 20-30 racks, they said they would lose like 10 a week.
    And he used excessive bedding.
    Eventually he switched to 1/3 bad shavings, 2/3 roasted pine. That gets rid if the respiratory infecting particles. And the small amount of respiratory infection particles also is an insecticide.

    Great video with full detail. I only have one question, the metal feeder have you ever had mice climbing up and chewing out?

    • @TheEmeraldScale
      @TheEmeraldScale  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Michael Barber never had them use the hopper to chew out. As long as they are optimally clean and fed and watered with no over crowding you should have no issues. Sometimes a freak of nature is born and you can easily cull the culprits.

    Thanks for this great video, it helped me a lot, but i have a question, I only have 1 tank made of 1 male and 3 females since i have 3 snakes only. Should i seperate the male from the tank when the females give birth to their babies? or it's fine to keep them together? Im worry about the male killing the babies but i only have 1 tank.. I would appreciate ur advice! and thanks again

    • @IamtheKGB
      @IamtheKGB 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes but more because the mice can and probably will get pregnant while raising a litter, which is stressful and will end up in dead litters and end up ruining a good female breeder. the males may kill the litter, or they may help raise them, same as mother mouses, they may be good mothers or may eat their litter (eating some is normal because the mother can sense if one is unhealthy and she eats it to get nutrients for her other young to survive).

    I am setting up a controlled breeding project for a future snake collection and have been doing research on this topic for a while now. I had originally purchased a small but pricey bag of holistic dog food only to learn that the protein content is way too high. It is strongly recommended that the food be no more than 13% protein. As much as my mouse would appear to prefer the dog food over the quality mouse food it is said that they will develop severe itching and kidney problems. Also the mice require much much more ventilation that is shown in the setup above. Over time these mice will most likely develop respiratory health problems. So please cull this herd often to prevent suffering.

    • @TheEmeraldScale
      @TheEmeraldScale  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +JohnPaul Ingress I got ya on all your concerns. As for the ventilation I have also addressed that in the video and explained the way to maximize this by drilling holes at the tops of the drawers to avoid the mice chewing through your vent holes. Also the drawers are not touching tops to bottoms so there is already a good open space for air to go through the drawers if you have them in a well ventilated area which I cant understand why anyone breeding mice would do otherwise once they have experienced the smell. The protein content is fine and I have never had a premature death in all my years of doing this. I know the recommendations and what not but this is not for pet mice it is for breeder setups that can be taxing on the mothers. Thanks for your input though. Good luck to you!

    can you do one with organic produce? like.. for cats, and dogs in raw food diet.. im not sure how to set that up.. we have a lot of left over.. food stuff from the garden but would they be ok on apples, and fruits and stuff like that? we also have black solider flies..and access to grain, and some seeds... so basically im asking about mixing your own feed. also what other toys/entertainment can be put in there with them besides the wheel? are there things i could make for them or .. wood squares things like that?

    If mice will use the same waste space, could you include a small rabbit litter box once they establish a waste corner, to make it easier to remove/clean/replace? How often do you replace all the bedding?
    Also, how soon can I remove the pinkies to feed to small animals (sugar gliders)? Do they all need to be removed or can I take 3-4/day without the mom freaking out and killing the rest?

    Also I heard that baking soda is no good for snakes. So feeding mice to snakes that have been near baking soda is bad no? Have you had any problems?

    • @TheEmeraldScale
      @TheEmeraldScale  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never had an issue. The baking soda is finely sprinkled and its not really ever on the mice. They groom like crazy and i doubt they ever ingest it. But no issues for years, still just my personal experience. Be careful always when using any substance with animals.

    • @TheEmeraldScale
      @TheEmeraldScale  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aww thanks so much! As for balls, they are very finicky eaters usually and end up letting you know what they want. I say try mice for a good portion of its life, keep in mind varying a balls diet will open you up to it picking and choosing what it wants. I will make a video with more detail. As for how to feed it, i alwayd say prekill or frozen thawed depending on your budget and preference, also the snakes preference lol. I prekill by putting the prey in a sturdy bag and spinning them rapidly for a minute or more, stuns the dizzy without actual trauma and renders them unable to hurt your snake.

    So I have two snakes: a dumerils (he's probably about a foot long) and a ball (he's about three feet). My ball python eats frozen so I will probably continue buying his rats from the store. But I'm wondering if it would be cheaper and easier to breed mice for my dumerils (he eats live) than to buy them at the store. I've been paying about five dollars a week for just his food.

    • @sadiecollar3881
      @sadiecollar3881 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, would the breeding produce TOO MANY mice for him to eat? Since Its just the one snake and I feed him once a week, I'm wondering if there will be like extra babies that will grow to fast and be too big for him to eat eventually? IDK, I'm new at this. How fast do mice grow?

The largest eats medium rats, then I have one that eats fuzzys, and then pinkies is the last. How many femailes should I start with? I was thinking a 2:1 ratio for the time being.

    I don't remember- do they have a little something to hide in? I have some tiny cardboard boxes in mine.

      +May Davies mine never had hides, i figured they used the entire drawer as such. Just too messy with hides for fast cleaning. They nested just fine.

    Do U know, would a lot of this information also apply for rats (larger space being an obvious difference, of course). I realize that they really aren't that closely related, but they do share some lifestyle elements, and wanted to check. :)

    Hi I know it's late but I want to do a mouse breeding project soon and I really like this method but I do have some questions! Mostly I'm just confused about why you keep the male with his daughters - I know mice like being in a group and it's not a great idea to keep him with the breeders 24/7 but I just was confused about how you manage it.

      Scout B Hey sorry for the late reply. It truly depends what you are breeding for. My mice were never meant for pets nor would they wind up in that situation. Thus no need to seperate babies and stop incest. It is easier to breed and keep the colony going when a daughter grows up in the colony. If you add a new female they have to establish their pecking order again and the new female can and will usually kill any babies present or born too soon before she has settled in. Hope that helps.

    hi my breeding mice just produced their first litter and I was wondering if snakes would eat the pinkies right after the pinkies were born.

    • @TheEmeraldScale
      @TheEmeraldScale  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      They will, but i would give the pinks some time to drink milk. You can see the belly full of milk once fed. I say give the pink then, more nutrition for the snake than a fresh pup, and dont try feeding the placenta, just yucky lol

    So by November I'll have a drawer like that with 2 male 2 female. Once they get used to each other ill move them to separate drawers and then start two family's. After all of this ill get a snake and start to feed them

    • @TheEmeraldScale
      @TheEmeraldScale  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +EpicGoku Try to keep atleast 2 females to one male as having only one female in with him will result in possible overbreeding of the female and this is very stressful on their bodies. Remember you want to give them the best respect possible when providing their care, even if they are simply feeders, they are alive. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

      Ashley katan it has been said it can with the snakes but it never caused me a problem with either mouse or snake. i only sprinkled a little bit, very sparse distribution. Hope that helps, now I use dirt as their substrate and it works even better.

    what does holistic mean when it comes to dog food? is it a brand or what?, thanks

    • @TheEmeraldScale
      @TheEmeraldScale  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply. Holistic isnt a brand so much as dog food with as many organic ingredients on the list that i could afford at the time. The brand i would recommend is organix if you can. Authority for the most bargain ok brand from petsmart.

      +Kylie Mandock No rats can never cohabitate with Mice, they will kill them eventually and it wont be pretty.
