In the early 1970s, I worked at Baher Chevrolet on summer vacation from Monroe HS. I remember working one day and hearing the outdoor concert at Devonshire Downs that wasn't too far away. Canned Heat was playing in the background while I was working. Boogie till the break of day.
When you explain how someone mentioning a store sets off all these memories? That's what it is like watching this series. Memories I haven't thought of in decades come to life.
No point in having a conversation with myself I suppose. Anyways thank you for sharing your awesome video memories. Memories are all I have of my childhood anymore. Im not gonna lie some of your videos produced joyful tears. Take care.

Malibu Grand Prix, wow! My dad used to take us there every Sunday. I was too young to drive the “Virage” cars, barely. So the guy working there saw my dads brand new ‘81 BMW 320i and said if my dad lets him drive it, he’ll let me drive their Virage cars, and we made it happen.

So many memories... used to walk to the shakeys and play Super Mario Brothers. One of my first dates with my wife was to the Malibu Castle in 1992 - mini golf, skee ball, and snow cones.
I loved watching these videos... But they nearly make me cry. The valley was such a nice place when I was a kid. I'm 38 and I'm ready to flee this place. Good things don't last forever.
Please keep them coming because you know what it's a part of your childhood it's also a part of my childhood because I grew up in the San Fernando Valley as Malibu Grand Prix the castle video game arcade in Sherman Oaks and Sepulveda and a whole host of others please keep them coming because you take me back in time which is something I truly miss thanks 80s forever.
2:20 My first job was at Family Fun Arcade during 1980 ish until 1983 ish. What a fun time working and hanging out with lots of people form all over The Valley. The church you mentioned used to be an "Acorn" store and Mexican restaurant "La Fiesta." Last, at "Devonshire Downs" there used to be a very large slide, but not sure when it was removed.
A great set of videos. I lived in Reseda for 27 years. I moved away 18 years ago. Even though I am an earlier generation from you, your vids gave me memories, mostly of the eating places and movie theaters. My Soo Way story: One Saturday evening my friend came over. She was from Taiwan. She stopped at Soo Way to pickup some takeout. Her idea. She had never been there before. When we opened the containers, they were not what she expected. The Chow Mein had no noodles. She took her fiery temper back to the store to complain. She was told that their food was prepared for American people. I think she understood.
Malibu Grand Prix ! FTW!!!?? What about the Northridge Water Slides and trampolines that used to be adjacent to it!?? Anyone remember those!?? Not to mention that there used to be a store called BEST that had all the best toys! And Tower Records was right there too all in walking distance!!! Such a Better time back then!!
Always enjoy watching makes me wanna do this in my home town. My buddy has a full 90s Arcade in his pole barn on the second floor, loud music, checker carpets, 45 Arcade games, air hockey, shuffle board, its all for us Lol his daughter could care less
These are probably my favorite because they are kind of a package deal because we get cool memories , cool landmarks , personal story time from you , and filming locations . I love it you're doing awesome don't change a thing....
I REMEMBER IN 1985 GOING TO MALIBU Grand Prix on Nordhoff st..I had to pay for my drivers license..I couldn't ride the big cars because of my age. I'm looking forward to some more adventures 😄
I’ve been working at castle park for 20+ years now and I’m glad to see it mentioned. The price for golf is cheaper than a burger at McDonald’s these days, lol. The castle has also seen it’s fair share of film shoots. I wish I could’ve seen the Sherman Oaks Galleria in its heyday. It was closed when I started working at the castle. We did get the Tower Records there which was a plus, for a little while at least. Good times
Dude. I lived at that arcade in 78 and 79. I lived right down the street. We used to play foos ball there everyday. I even sold flowers on that corner on Thanksgiving and made a fortune as a kid. I think I still have my Malibu license somewhere from 1980. LOL
The former North Hollywood location of Malibu Grand Prix/Malibu Castle/Castle Park on Vanowen & Whitsett was my favorite valley hangout in the 80's. I have many fond memories of the former waterslide which was eventually replaced by the iconic go-carts sometime in the late 80's. Back in the day it was also one of the few places where you could play "Dragon's Lair", the famed laserdisc based arcade game. Now it's just a bunch of drab senior living apartments.
I am 46 year old I grew up in North Hollywood around Lankershim and Victory, I have your kind of memory and enjoy all your stories except you jefito giving up his Impala. You moved a lot and so did I and I see you are an amazing jefito so we learned, I love all of it the locations, your love for film, skate boarding, bikes, music, music stores. Keep it up I am a very entertained local and now I live in Winnetka which is more your hood and I am learning. I shop weekly at that Albetsons they keep it safe and clean there. It is getting rough out here carnalito. Stay Safe keep working. More dancing I haven't pulled the kid n play jump through in decades. I still BMX though GT DyNOs Redlines you know that 80s life. Your kids have a cool jefito tell them I said so.
Way back when, my introduction to the SFV was being employed at Bouchard Communications (1981) and also dating a girl from North Hollywood, and then later on in life was employed by the City of Los Angeles (Van Nuys)! I no longer reside in my home State of Ca. but as a subscribed fan....keep these vids alive. Thank You.
Ha! My sisters and I would do that with our big gulps; mix all the pops. I could really use a lime slurpee right about now! Great story about the ice cream trip in the Samurai. Personally, I would like it if you keep telling the stories; I like hearing about other peoples' experiences growing up, and what life was really like in different places at different times, and what makes people nostalgic. I think it's fascinating. You never know what might trigger some cool memory of your own. And of course, it's cool to see how different things look now, from back when. Big like from me. Cheers !
We always mixed our sodas like that haha. Thank you I am definitely keeping the stories in. Funny thing is, I was very in the fence about the Suzuki story, just because I didn't think people would care. Really glad you enjoyed it.
i love this series. reminds me of my years in the valley Family Fun Arcade and BC... Those were the days. Also, that Pup n Taco was used in the very beginning of the movie The Runaways, but in the movie it was called pup n fries
I love this!! You were in my neighborhood in Encino. I lived there from 1976-1988. I grew up in Reseda though. Thanks for the memories! More, more, more!

I frequented Family Fun and Continental Comics, and went to Pinecrest Elementary right behind that church off of Devonshire. I still drive through like you about twice a year taking in all the memories. More of these please!
Great video I was born and raised in Reseda moved to Canoga park in 71 lived there till 85 then moved to Chatsworth lived there till 87 and then we moved out of area I miss the old days keep up your great videos.
I didn't live in the SFV, but my uncle did (he lived off of Balboa and Roscoe) and I spent a lot of time there in the late 70s up until the mid 80s (I was born in 1968). The times spent there were some of the best of my life and I still love visiting every chance I get. Although my memories of the places aren't the same as yours, you nail the mood of my youth of a place that still feels the same to me for the most part. Thanks and keep up the excellent work!
You're right about the door for L.A.tronics being around the corner of what is now the main entrance for Pet Co. My family went to shop over at L.A.tronics in the mid 80s looking to get a humidifier.
Thanks for showcasing my childhood in the Valley in the 80's. I grew up in Van Nuys and in Sherman Oaks, Castle Park was my daily hang out since I lived on Kester Ave. =) Wow, I miss the valley in the 80's. You forgot to mention the water park next door to Malibu Grand Prix in Northridge. Keep up the great work!
This is one of the best videos I've seen. We used to shop at Lucky Back in the late 80s when we used to live near Culver City on Sepulveda and Venice Boulevard. My mom used to take me to 20/20 video to rent Nintendo games thank you for putting that on there I'm going to go see the 20/20 myself!!! So cool to know that there's still one open in SoCal. Keep your personal memories on there. I think it it's what keeps us all connected on your Channel
Thanks for the videos. We had a Malibu grand prix in Miramar just north of san Diego. Always wanted to own one of those go karts. There was a stop and go off the 215 near March air force base. Every summer my parents would take take the long way to Tucson, and back to home to oceanside. Still remember some of those stop and go commercials
I really like that you plug punk rock. I saw the majority of those punk shows you mentioned. Living in the west Valley, it was great seeing punk shows in your own backyard!
Like everyone is telling you keep bringing on the videos sharing your growing up in the Valley. That's what makes em so G R E A T!!! I just love hearing the great relationship you have with your parents and brother. D O N'T S T O P!!!!!
I went to Crespi for high school and they actually kept the Thrifty’s inside the Right Aid in it’s own little corner until it closed to become Ross. Loved going there after school.
Malibu Grand Prix … Classic! One of the few places that I knew of to play SPY HUNTER , 720 , & RAMPAGE … Abe’s Deli was next door - Used to love that spot - Thanks for always posting the OG valley content Kurt !
I miss arcades. It was where most of my friends hung out and there was all types of games to try out. "they just got street fighter champion edition in at the arcade."
There was an Oval Go-Cart track right next to Malibu Grand Prix. It was called "Slider Cars". The guy working the track would wet the entrance to both corners with water from a hose. The 5 horse Briggs engines had the governors removed to help effect a better drift while going around the curve. It was much cheaper and in my opinion much better than M.G.P. Thanks for the helping me remember some really great times when I was 18.
When you pointed out where the actual entrance to the electronics store was , it all came back to me, esp the big 5 part! I went to our lady of grace from k-7 , next store to the ralphs and would get ice cream at that thrifty all the time! I spent many night at the arcade in Northridge also, we would go there when starbucks on Reseda and Devonshire closed. Once we got bored, we leave the cars there and walk across the street to Denny's.
Dude these vids bring back so many memories. I totally remember as a teen hanging out at that Ralph’s waiting for people to leave carts behind and battling the bums for those cart quarters. We would then go to a 7-11 nearby which had Commando and Spy Hunter. We lived in a condo off white oak.
oh my gosh your video is so cool! I LOVE that you are sharing these memories and showing visuals of them! i pass by a bunch of these places and i would have never guessed they had all these cool things happening before! i really wish we could bring these back.
I remember me and my best friend drove from whittier to Northridge to go to Fear Factory one Friday night. Scariest night of my life. It was very graphic and looked so authentic lol😂. Had to have been 84 or 85.
To use an 80’s euphemism. AWESOME TOTALLY AWESOME 😎. I was in the busing program, from So. Central Los Angles (Crenshaw High School) to the West Valley (Taft High). I enjoyed the Valley. My parents moved close to El Camino High, the month of May, my senior year, 1983. Pup ‘n’ Taco🌮. I haven’t heard the name in 30+ years. Here’s one for you…. (hope I spell it correctly), Nogales. It was a chain fast food restaurant on Vanowen & Valley Circle.
Malibu Castle. The arcade inside was amazing in the early-mid1980s. In fact, I learned later that Malibu Castle had its own video game division, Millennium Games Products. I played the ultrarare (unique?) laser disc game Freedom Fighter there, which was modeled after Dragon's Lair, but a futuristic anime. I remember the big crowd of kids around that cabinet. I also remember playing Gauntlet right after it came out when I was barely tall enough to reach the controls. Great memories.
Dude i cant believe your videos! Me and the homies always went to Family Fun Arcade after the Thursday night Import car meets on Devonshire and Reseda and play racing games... And where that Pup n taco/ Fatburger was, i used to park there to hangout at my homies apt complex that’s immediately to the right of the view you showed. I grew up in Toluca Lake and North Hollywood years later down from the Cobra Kai studio... i lived on Elmer Ave & Burbank blvd... Blast from the past, i love these videos. Tugs a heart string. I now live in Lawndale, insanely enough 5 mins from the 99c store Cobra was filmed at.. Cant wait to see what else you come up with dude ✊🏼
I cant tell you SHIT about SFV because I didn't grow up there. I grew up in SGV. But what keeps me engaged in your videos is the nostalgic architecture of old stores. Especially watching remnants of an old door or something that is still there after 40yrs. Stuff like that is awesome!!
Great video as always! Before LATronics, a toy store used to be there by the name of Karl's Toys. You can actually see the sign in the clip of Zapped on your video. My mom bought be a Digital Diamond baseball game from Tomy from Karl's Toys before it became LATronics. That area has so many memories for me! Played a ton of Karate Champ at the 7-Eleven on Zelzah and almost got busted trying to shoplift a Transformer from that Thrifty.

@@80sLife Thanks for the memories and keep up the good work!
I like hearing your personal memories!
Thank you
You're right about the door for L.A.tronics being around the corner of what is now the main entrance for Pet Co. My family went to shop over at L.A.tronics in the mid 80s looking to get a humidifier.
Ok cool. Thanks for confirming for me
I’m so glad to be able to go to family fun arcade as a kid in the 2000s
Me too
Thanks for showcasing my childhood in the Valley in the 80's.
Thank you. I appreciate it
I miss the Malibu Grand Prix! i wish i still had the license they give you.
Thank you so much for watching
I love your personal stories! please keep doing them, it just adds something extra to your videos, and I love your nostalgia.
I really like that you plug punk rock. I saw the majority of those punk shows you mentioned. Living in the west Valley, it was great seeing punk shows in your own backyard!
Thank you and thanks for watching
Like everyone is telling you keep bringing on the videos sharing your growing up in the Valley.
That's what makes em so
G R E A T!!!
I just love hearing the great relationship you have with your parents and brother.
D O N'T S T O P!!!!!
You got it. I won't be stopping. Thank you so much
I went to Crespi for high school and they actually kept the Thrifty’s inside the Right Aid in it’s own little corner until it closed to become Ross. Loved going there after school.
Yeah I think all Rite Aid still have the Thrifty ice cream.. we still have that at least
Love this!!
Thank you
Nostalgia, miss some of the old places.
Malibu Grand Prix … Classic! One of the few places that I knew of to play SPY HUNTER , 720 , & RAMPAGE … Abe’s Deli was next door - Used to love that spot - Thanks for always posting the OG valley content Kurt !
We like when you talk about your memories
Thank you!
All good! Love this channel. Thanks.
Thank you. I appreciate it
I miss arcades. It was where most of my friends hung out and there was all types of games to try out. "they just got street fighter champion edition in at the arcade."
wow 38 years, good run
There was an Oval Go-Cart track right next to Malibu Grand Prix. It was called "Slider Cars". The guy working the track would wet the entrance to both corners with water from a hose. The 5 horse Briggs engines had the governors removed to help effect a better drift while going around the curve. It was much cheaper and in my opinion much better than M.G.P. Thanks for the helping me remember some really great times when I was 18.
I grew up in Glendale, so I really enjoy seeing your videos. I had a birthday at Malibu castle. Thanks for pointing out that place.
All your comments are actually making ME feel nostalgic
@@80sLife That's awesome!!
That opening shot of The Valley is so beautiful!! I've been close, or exactly to that same spot!!
Thank you!!
Always looking forward to your vids dude
Greetings from The Netherlands
Thank you!!
I remember me and my best friend drove from whittier to Northridge to go to Fear Factory one Friday night. Scariest night of my life. It was very graphic and looked so authentic lol😂. Had to have been 84 or 85.
I enjoy your videos keep them coming! 80s 4 life!!!
You got it. Thank you!
Yes definitely. I talk about Naugels in one of my other videos. I show a different location on Vanowen. They are open again in Orange county
Thank you so much
I cant tell you SHIT about SFV because I didn't grow up there.
Thank you!! I was trying to figure out what the sign said in Zapped, thanks for clearing that up. That was our 7 11 back then
Oh man. I used to do the mix fountain drink at 7/11 back in the 80’s too 😋
Yeah, keep doing what you're doing! It's fun for us to learn about you through your childhood memories! Keep going!👍
Thank you
Your videos spark old archived memories I have from the 80's. Every birthday we had was at Malibu Grand Prix or Iceoplex. Keep it up!
Awesome. Thank you so much
I love these vids including your memories and I didn't even grow up in LA! More, more, more!
Thank you!! More on the way
