I think the similarity of the previous shots between the both of you was very pleasant to the viewer. The drastic differences between the two now makes it a little chaotic as well as I feel the different positioning of Justin’s mic doesn’t make the audio blend well as before you couldn’t even tell yall were in different rooms
Nerd Town: Handle weighting - how much it changes the balance point and what that feels like. Handle weighting location - Does the location of the weight make a difference to balance and feel? (along the "vertical" or "horizontal" edge of the handle, the top or bottom of the handle ...). Handle weighting methods - different ways to change the handle weight, either through a Slyce cap, lead tape, overgrip, Hesacore, ... I take the end cap off, hot glue two 1/2" flat washers (0.21oz each) into the cap, then reattach it to the paddle. The Slyce cap is too thick for my liking and maybe too heavy for some paddles. Replaceable weighted handle pallets would be amazing!
for Q and A (possibly): What are both of your optimal lead/tungsten weight placements/amounts and optimal playing static weights (for current gamers- what shape?)?
Feelin pretty good about my paddle purchases after seeing the Black Friday recs. Already got the j2k as my first main over the summer and was able to get both the Monarch All Court and Jellybean during their 11-6-24 deal for I paid for the J2k at 135. I regret missing out on their discontinued Kevlar paddles for $50 that day. I was going to buy my GF a jellybean in their royal burst colorway but she said she preferred the shape of the j2k, but she still wants a paddle with pink, so I’m so thankful Neonic released their Flow Prime X in Rose Gold. If that paddle ends up too poppy for her while she’s learning especially during the winter when paddles and balls have more pace, I still have my jellybean she can use. I greatly appreciate this podcast and channel for all the help choosing these paddles with confidence!
Justin, you asked for comments/questions so here is my nerdiness on display. In the search for all the desirable characteristics I keep coming back to feel, spin , control and pop. Power not being that important to me personally. That being said the paddle components that seem to have the most impact on those criteria are (obviously) thickness, lay up choices and now I learned from you guys about cell size and density of the core. I guess it appears to me that the ideal combination is titanium or Kevlar and carbon fiber and fiberglass with a smaller diameter core size. It seems like there isn’t an option out there that combines a soft feel , good control and generous pop in my favorite shape(hybrid). Am I missing something? I guess if the Neonic Flare Prime came in a hybrid shape I’d be playing with it! Thanks for all your effort and insight. I’m waiting to get my Invader so that might check most of the boxes. 🤞
Justin, the new studio looks great and really completes your surpassing of Louis in all things pickleball (seriously Louis, step it up). Jk, nothing but love. Have a great Thanksgiving boys!
I think that if compressed core paddles keep getting more powerful over use, then they should be banned as it changes the game whereas people will stay away from the kitchen and play a tennis match instead of pickleball.
I don't know if this topic has been covered before, but my questions for Nerd Town is what exactly is a Nomex/Kevlar Core? is it a honeycomb Kevlar core like PP? and as an insider, why has this material fallen out of favor with paddle companies?
I had two Olympus paddles, one was obviously delaminated, but the other one I was core crushed. The thing is with the foam fill I really couldn't tell from the push test. But hitting with the replacement paddles they sent, I sadly got used to playing with a core crushed paddle and I miss the power. Weird.
Awesome episode, happy to know that I’m not the only one that says to himself “1PAT” or to “Reset” in order to refocus and actually “be” in the next point mentally. Gotta buy that mindset book.
I am very thankful for pickleball. I've met so many friendly people and made some great new friends because of this awesome game. Also, thank you both for the fun and informative content and for inspiring me to keep getting better.
Hi Louis - can u share your methodology for weighting the handle? Do you wrap tungsten tape around the handle? If yes, do you tightly wrap/overlap at the bottom of the handle or do you wrap more evenly across the 5.5 inches or handle length? Thanks
I use the pre cut 3gs of lead tape and just put them right above where the buttcap ends vertically. One on each “4” sides even though they are octagonal
Justin … “fresh and pristine” … got that new paddle smell 😂 Still trying to wrap my mind around vampire astronauts. Do not go outside and get the mail.
Agree on the Flow Prime x deal one of the best paddles Ive played recently I like it more than my Vatic Saga. Has same power but more pop than the Saga
I’m thankful for you guys! Best pickleball podcast! (don’t tell the others I said that…or do tell. I don’t care) Also thankful for Bread & Butter! I should be getting my Invader this afternoon and I’m stoked to try it out! Happy Thanksgiving boys!
Nerd town topic: paddle mods that will possibly void your warranty and what they do. Cutting the handle shorter, tungsten putty in the end cap, shaving down your edge guard with a hand plane, etc.
One thing I think you guys missed with your praise for the Invader's lack of taper is this - a "traditional" hybrid tapers up from 7.6 to 7.7 or 7.75. B&B didn't choose the wider width and remove the taper. They chose the smaller width. Therefore, you are gaining no stability in this over paddles that have that traditional hybrid taper. Perhaps they will gain that stabilty back by having a four-layer surface. This paddle should also have a lower balance point and lower swing weight by comparison.
I just measured my Invader and it's exactly 16.25" x 7.75". Looks like they have the specs listed incorrectly on the site. We'll let them know so they aren't giving off the wrong impression and shortchanging themselves.
I enjoyed the podcast. I enjoyed Justin’s Needtown episode. I have a follow up question: can you tell me how much weight you will need to put in the handle to bring the balance point down in a head heavy paddle to the middle of the paddle without making the paddle feel too heavy to maneuver? Have a wonderful Thanksgiving 🦃❤️
BnB marketing never been better. For a future Nerd Town topic, SPECTRA CORD. It's such a strong fiber, it seems it would be ideal for a part of the weave in face sheets. It's been used in climbing gear, braided fishing lines, and stunt kite lines for years. Have the same thoughts as Justin about my SAGA.
Dyneema is another one. Both are UHMWPE (ultra high molecular weight poly ethylene). I have used Dyneema for hammock suspensions. Great stuff. Choo-choo for nerd town! 😂
I just picked up the Pulse V cause I wanted to try out a wide body... Was set on trying the Invader but... Maybe I can get myself to try a "hybrid" shape :)
NEW WEEK, NEW MAIN!!! I was just about to pull the trigger on the J2Ti, but the BnB Invader looks so good! Any chance the review comes out before the Black Friday deals are over?
Why would anyone say "adding 5 to 7 grams in the handle...will bring the balance point down which makes the paddle feel more maneuverable"? Adding weight anywhere on the paddle increases the static weight which forces the player to use more power in translation of the paddle. Adding weight anywhere on the paddle increases the swing weight which forces the player to use more power in rotation of the paddle. The idea that adding weight to move the balance point down to increase maneuverability is myth. Adding weight may increase serve speed, it may increase twist weight, but not maneuverability
We may revisit maneuverability in a future episode. I understand the physics of what you are getting at about objective maneuverability, but in this context, subjective feelings of "maneuverability" are relevant as well. We put a lot of time, thought, and testing into this specific topic when creating the Maneuverability Rating used by Louis and some other reviewers.
@@Pickleballetc I've always been curious why balance point is used to describe how a paddle feels or performs. The balance point, in my opinion, should only be used when calculating MOI (particularly swing weight at the pivot point) at various points on the paddle or locating the center of percussion. I'm open to being proven wrong. My guess is that balance point (along with the terms "head light" and "head heavy") is an anachronistic tennis term used to describe swing weight when swing weight machines were not commonly available.
Louis … Justin … I have been trash talking you on the other reviewers channels. You’re welcome … pulling traffic in your direction. Come for the short shorts, stay for the short shorts (and now choking the handle, wow). Louis, I have a Marketing degree I never used, and slept many decades since then, but I think the short shorts is your brand. Move over 3.5 at best, say hello to thighs at best. Since you obviously are going to need to sell backend and not that backhand 😂 in your 4.0 holy grail series, you will need to up your branding game. You are the video guy … what’s the terminology? I ordered one of the first run Invaders with the "blemish". I am super hyped for it to get here.

can you do a video on how you wrap handle with weight?
Chris PBStudio gave a shout out to Louis’ short shorts. He said goto Stack for some good BF deals.

My j2k came in 8.3 oz. I did not know I could request a light one when I ordered.

Monarch JB is $65 with code, and the 14 is sold out
Not a fan of the gradient edge guards, once I put weight and edge guard on a new paddle it covers most of the color up anyway.
I just picked up the Pulse V cause I wanted to try out a wide body... Was set on trying the Invader but... Maybe I can get myself to try a "hybrid" shape :)
How do you guys measure your paddle swing weight?
With Briffidi SW1 machines
is the bnb invader comparable to the gearbox hyper ultimate? j2k?
Nerd Town: Why so many 14mm power paddles?
That is not what they meant by choking up on the handle … first time I’ve seen a pickleball paddle handle grow.
So curious on the paddle that cannot be shown
Thankful for your pod - keep it rolling guys!
Justin, what’s the wording/graphics on the bottom inside of the box? Alien speak like Shogun one that had to be translated from Japanese?
