John, thanks for the shoutout. It was so good to meet you and get some games in. Next time I'm going to beg you to teach me that Yates shot. It was a ton of fun watching you guys grind through to your bronze medal. Congrats again!
So glad you and JJ ended up with bronze John! That makes me feel better! You and I ended up 5th out of 20 teams so not too bad, but losing just before getting to gold medal match and that last one to not go to bronze 16-14 to a team we had already beaten on way up! Ugh! That hurt! You played great though! I felt equal to the female players, but need to practice up my mixed resetting away from aggressive guys who sort of take over court. The guy with gearbox PPE hammered me from midcourt and just kept me from making my way through transition zone. You should brag you were super solid and had at least two Kyle’s and an ernie! ❤
If you have to wear glasses to play due to vision correction The Oakley gamers glasses are awesome. They fit well with a hat stay in well and work great with a beanie if in the cold.
Hey John - absolutely loving the pulse V - mine did heat up a bit but did stop breaking in at about the ESQ-C 14.3 power level - which is perfect for me - do you know what the cell size of the polypropylene is - I see on the specs listed as “Narrow-cell Honeycomb Poly Core” - this is my favorite feeling paddle ever - whatever they did - more please!! Also, I think it would be super cool if you considered adding the polypropylene cell size to future paddles in your database - just a thought - for me that would be a big plus - keep up the great work! Paul
On my third overgrip with my Pulse V and minimal if any break-in. The only issue I have had is the dwell is a bit too much for indoor ball (Onix Fusion) play. The dwell feels perfect for outdoor (Franklin X40). I will switch back to my J2K for indoor ball play, but stay with the Pulse V for outdoor play. Mod TA-15 for singles.
Perhaps it's just the honeymoon phase with different cell size paddles, but I am currently preferring 6/10mm cores over the standard 8mm. The Flare Prime X quickly became my main, and now the Vatic Saga is challenging that. They are great paddles, and I'm loving the feel of both of them.
I continue to enjoy all the content and perspective that you guys provide. I was wondering if you have played with, seen or heard anything yet about the new Dope Pickleball paddle. Looking forward to getting my pre-order before too long. Some kind of chip in the handle?, wtf!
Question … John, anyone. I’ve noticed watching pros return serves (say right hander for this question), even when they have to move forward to get to ball, they hit open stance off right leg. In tennis, generally a right hander moving forward hits off left leg in neutral/square stance in stride. When you see something that is fairly universal at pro level, there is usually a reason. Anyone know the “why”? It might simply be because of lower bounce and more time … bending and planting right leg a better match. You can hit off either leg in stride on way to kitchen, so that’s not the “why”.
Really loving my Pickleball Apes Pulse V and I blame John for getting me back into a standard/wide body paddle after 5+ years of playing with an elongated/hybrid shape
Any chance you can get the stats for the 11six24 Huarache X Alpha 1? Been hearing a lot about the paddle and would love to see some power, pop, and spin numbers!
I think it depends a lot on the paddle's construction and who is using it (i.e. a powerful ball striker vs. a control-type player). For the newer Gen3 paddles, I typically see break-in at about the 8-10 hour timeframe.
What the heck... John is 52 years old!? He looks 28 years old (because of how fit he is), and I was hoping he was 34 so I would feel better about myself, but assumed he might be 38 because of how suave and eloquently he speaks.... 🤯 teach me your ways Sensei!
Hey Eddie I just found out I need glasses 🤓 are your glasses prescription Oakley? I’m looking for a durable sports frame to wear when I play and noticed yours look pretty cool
Hey - thanks! These are the Hyperlink, which are my daily drivers. Great for everyday stuff, and good enough should a pickleball game break out unexpectedly! But I use the Oakley Flak 2.0 prescription for my usual game play. Great optics, lightweight, and they stay in place. Been hit a few times and both my glasses and eyes are unscathed!
John … Hideaway started in Stillwater, OK … Oklahoma State Cowboys. Many a late Friday night after partying, small Hideaway Canadian bacon and mushroom delivered to dorm $4 and 10 cents. I can’t remember last month, but I remember the price of that perfection all these years later. 😂 Indian Wells is awesome, went to watch pro tennis tournament two times.
Thanks for the clarification - I thought it was started in Oklahoma. I worked at the Tulsa Hideaway in 1997 while going to TU. I was glad to see all these years later, they're still serving the same pizzas, and their red sauce recipe hasn't changed
Not seeing the GB give away on their site?? Weather in TX (Farmers Branch) can and does wreck a good tournament for the amatuers. LIke my PIVOTS. No fogging. PP cell specs have been ignored for too long, so thanks. Cell "wall" thickness is a big factor. I play a 9.35 oz so weight is not such a big deal for me. ALW's paddle sure sounded different. On the fence about getting the OLYMPUS or the new GB wide.
I'm not sure what John would say, but I'm loving the Saga, and that's saying something given how good the new Paddleteks are. Saga, if 'all court' is your preference. Paddletek, for a more power-oriented choice. The saga is so composed and consistent across the face; whereas the Paddleteks have somewhat of a dead zone at the top of the paddle. Plus, the price!

Sweet, will have to look into them. Been looking for some. How’s the fogging in them?
Which model? Love Oakley!
Great Pod guys always entertaining and informative. You're very close to 15k subscribers congrats in advance!!!
That's amazing! Didn't notice until you pointed it out...
Great podcast, I really appreciate that guide to the Black Friday deals!
John how do you compare the Pulse V with your Gearbox?
Hey John - absolutely loving the pulse V - mine did heat up a bit but did stop breaking in at about the ESQ-C 14.3 power level - which is perfect for me - do you know what the cell size of the polypropylene is - I see on the specs listed as “Narrow-cell Honeycomb Poly Core” - this is my favorite feeling paddle ever - whatever they did - more please!! Eagerly waiting for the review of the ultimate hyper !
Thanks for the Black Friday shopping guide! Looking at a potential purchase with B&B or Ronbus, following up from the 11six24 sales
Great podcast guys!
I don’t mind a used paddle for the right price 3 of my 7 were bought used and they play well to this day
If anyone is interested, Headspace is currently 50% off for the 1st year, $34.99 instead of $69.99.
Hi, John. Nice meeting you at World's. It was in Farmer's Branch by the way.
That’s right! I was blanking while recording. Serious mental fatigue 😂

Great podcast! Holding out for Blackfriday, was hoping pickleball apes was having a sale on the Pulse series, ugh!😢

Do a virtual book club!

What’s the wide body gearbox model that’s mentioned in the end?
Which paddle has more power and control between the Vatic Saga and the Spartus Olympus paddle?
Saga for control. Spartus for power.
Enjoy the podcast. How long is the break-in period of the paddles?
I think it depends a lot on the paddle's construction and who is using it (i.e. a powerful ball striker vs. a control-type player). For the newer Gen3 paddles, I typically see break-in at about the 8-10 hour timeframe.

Does the Engage Pursuit Pro1 have the larger cells as well? I rewatched your review and you showed it was thicker, but never specified the size.
do u have review on the standout cf3 control paddle? :) how does its compare to j2k?

John how can one tell when the paddle is broken in?
It depends on the paddle, but for the Apes Pulse, it becomes softer, more forgiving, lower tone, and slightly more powerful

U need to login
Still don't see it@@Syndrome88
Can you put a prescription in the Crbn glass’s
Thanks for the podcast. Will KTCH's backpacks be on sale on Black Friday?
Good question - I'll reach out to them

John has a link in the video drop down that you have to use, I was trying to go to find it too.
Eddy these glasses look awesome on you man - $ - I have a thinner face and will look goofier than John with them - look like awesome glasses tho
Do you like the saga more or the bantams? And why

@ thanks eddie! Is it your new main?! Love the feedback! Waiting on mine
My family also does giblet gravy with egg!
Nice! Where is your family from?
Mississippi and Arkansas
Hope you can review the new Engage Pursuit V 2.0
Please add the cell size to your paddle database.
Good idea! But judging from the x-rays, the cell size is quite variable, even with the 'standard' (8mm) category
discount code didnt work =[
The Melin code starts in two hours at noon mountain time
😎😎😎😎😎😎
Where in the Deep South are they from?
Hickory Ridge, Arkansas
@ very cool. I’m in South Carolina. I’ve never been to Arkansas.
VATIC all day!!!!
The new Saga is the bomb-diggity! Lovin' it!
Getting mine!!! Been with prism flash forever and still love that paddle too!!
