    This is taken from my Star Trek The Next Generation Moments project that I'm working on. As happened with the TV series, which had a makeover in their Third Season, I have also edited the info banner to make it easier to read.
    The project will show the best of STNG in a series of memorable moments from each episode. My personal favourites are longer but I still have some work to do on it, see what you think.
    But please watch it from my STNG Moments Playlist, that way you can see each episode as they are meant to be seen. • Star Trek Moments TNG ...
    Summery.
    Episode : 54. The Enterprise falls victim to an ancient booby trap set to snare starships; while in an effort to find an escape, Geordi finds himself falling for the holodeck's representation of a famous Federation engineer. Guest star Susan Gibney as Dr. Leah Brahms.

    By this time in the third season in the fall of 1989, I vividly remember watching episodes of TNG every week and anticipating what the next episode would bring. This was significantly different from the first two seasons.

    • @riogrande5761
      @riogrande5761 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      TNG did come into it's own by the 3rd season. Wished it could have had a few more but there were a few real duds in the last year or two so may be they were running out of good stories.

    • @megavolt67
      @megavolt67 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Season 3 of TNG is my favorite season of any TV show. No other Star Trek show (well, not TOS, DS9, or Voyager, which admittedly are the only ones I've seen from beginning to end) had a single season that matched its consistently high level of quality. So many great episodes that I enjoy revisiting time and time again.
      I do think that, in retrospect, Season 2 is underrated and not as rough as the first season (minus Shades of Grey), but Season 3 is certainly in a league of its own. Seasons 4 and 5 were very good, Season 6 had its ups and downs but was interesting for its attempts at continuity and new character development, and Season 7 was admittedly a bit weak though I'm glad that the show at least did have a great finale.
      Part of the problem I think was the loss of Gene Roddenberry during Season 5 and the heavier involvement of Brannon Braga in the last two seasons. He's the one who put Worf with Troi and came up with many of those bizarre "dream" episodes (and I do like Frame of Mind, but the general direction of his ideas was weird).

    Fun fact: Geordi had first based the scientist's personality on her actual logs, but changed it to what we here because it was too abrasive to work with. In a later episode the actual scientist herself came aboard and finds the simulation. She was more than a little upset.

    I'm not as surprised that Picard thought about the slingshot idea, but I'm surprised that a 24th century starship computer and andriod cannot compute all possible scenarios and course changes before a human being based on the given conditions. Data's reply to the maneuver should not be of "you've used the gravitational pull of the asteriod as a slingshot, excellent," which gives me the impression that he did not even considered that possibility (or he is just pretending that he did not know to make Picard look as stupid when comparing to him). It should be more of a "that was one of the million other possible options that I computed to increase the velocity of a vessel, but that was one of the top ones that I would have chosen too sir."

      I know this is an old comment, but I do have the answer.
      The reason the computer couldn't do it had to do with the trap itself. In order to pilot the ship, a significant number of systems would have to be active which would increase the radiation output of the assimilators.
      Why the computer can get the _Enterprise_ out, it can not do so fast enough due to the accelerated output of the aceton assimilators under those conditions.
      Assuming of course that the _Enterprise_ could maintain power output long enough to get out of the field in that scenario, which was the other major issue as the rate of leaching increased with the number of systems active.
      This is also why the trap is so effective regardless of how much power your ships can produce.

    NASA used slingshot techniques 'gravity assist' with Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. The maneuver takes kinetic energy from the planet and transfers it directly to the kinetic energy of the spacecraft. Without this special maneuver, they would have remained in orbit around the sun. Neither had enough fuel to go fast enough on their own to escape the sun. Those brilliant brilliant scientists at NASA.

    Destroying the Promellian battle cruiser makes no sense. They already turned off the distress signal. The aceton assimilators which are the real problem, are still there in the debris field. You would think Picard would have contacted Starfleet instead to have them figure out a way to retrieve the ship instead of destroying it.

    • @stevensolway1054
      @stevensolway1054 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a symbol of humanity's increasing reliance/dependence on more and more advanced technology, even in Star Trek. They could have pulled the ship out of there if they'd still kept 'Enterprise' style grappling hooks on their ships.

    • @ianrose666
      @ianrose666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      BartJ583 not really. One reply gives the reason why to blow it up (he didn’t understand why) why use torpedoes instead of phasers, and why tugging the ship out wouldn’t have worked (which he said they could’ve done). Ok, yes, they could’ve blown up the asteroids, but how many would be needed to be destroyed? Quicker and cleaner to remove the bait, and then the asteroid booby traps become somewhat irrelevant.

    Stupid ending, there was no reason to destroy a priceless/historical 1000+ year old relic like that. The crew already shut off the distress signal earlier, they could have set up warning beacons and notified Starfleet of the danger and function of the assimilators.
    With knowledge of the booby trap available, sweeper ship(s) could have come in and cleared a path with unmanned worker probes or maybe a physical grapple could have been attached and slowly moved the ship out. There are like a dozen ways they could have gotten that thing out safely without destroying it, such a waste.

    now if the enterprise d had the same kind of impulse drive as the original this episode wouldve been over in a short period. the impulse drives in the original or captain kirk era were like a jet engine kind of thing and those energy machines wouldnt have noticed them. impulse was a chemical based drive system. not like warp which is energy based

    • @WizelBalan
      @WizelBalan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that is my biggest grip with this episode, no reason to destroy the vessel when they trap is known, pretty sure they could have cleared a path using probes/worker drones an then tractor beamed it out or used a grapple like the old NX class.

    • @smv4usa
      @smv4usa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They could send a message to Starfleet, who would then put up warning markers about the trap. Then send Science/Engineering teams to clear the assimilators and recover the ship. It woul take time ubt it would pay off.

    She would have hated Jordy, and why the hell did they destroy that ancient vessel when it could have meant so much more to take it home! They had the sappers mapped by then or could have and once clear could have eliminated them easily, preserved something of immense value, even recreating their species.

      Yeah, but they didn't destroy it until they were at a safe distance, and they could have solved the puzzle somehow once they were restored. Mark the sector and come back, after all they would be at an advantage. So your question is moot.

    There's no way that one maneuver put them outside of the asteroid field based on the depth and width of the field that was shown on the view screen. Further, based on the asteroids left of the one used as the slingshot, the ship would've hit one of them.

      Joe Momma - that’s why they secretly gave helm control over to Han Solo running in a different holodeck program; one where the Menthar vessel was replaced with a star destroyer, and the addition of a few extra Tie fighters to make it seem more real, and they even replicated the cockpit of the Falcon, with Data playing the part of C-3PO, and Counselor Troi playing the part of Princess Leia!

    An asteroid of that small size would never have such a gravity it can slingshot the Enterprise away from it. It would barely attract it at all.

    • @JakkFrost1
      @JakkFrost1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends what it's made of. It's not the size that matters as much as the mass. An asteroid that size made of feathers will have a lot less gravity than an asteroid that size made of iron.

      Because with all the rest of the ship systems running, the assimilators kept them from moving. When they turned everything off, one last burst from the impulse engines allowed them to move without provoking the assimilators.
