      @AdamBragg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +119

      That's the sad part about it. There isn't really much commercial application for this. It's mostly just cool. Regular forklifts are already really good at lifting and carrying things and the Power Loader doesn't provide enough advantages over them to justify either the extra expense or the extra mechanical complexity it has in comparison.

    You guys should install pressure sensors on the grippers and have a sort of "fragile" mode to pick things up so you can close the grippers full speed but it would cut power as soon as the pressure sensor read X lbs of force. It would be amazing to see this thing able to catch a football or something without popping it!

    "What can we do with it?" A valid question. So far, as amazingly cool as it is, the Power Loader is actually pretty limited in it's usage. Due to the type of grippers it has, it's pretty much just an over-engineered forklift. There is little practical advantage in a mech style forklift, regular forklifts are themselves pretty awesome at doing basic lifting and carrying. So... what if the grippers could be removed and replaced with job-specific attachments? A jackhammer? A massive drill? A welding arm? An giant wreaking maul? Perhaps a large chainsaw attachment? With configurable "hands", the Power Loader can be so much more than a forklift with robot arms. You've designed so many degrees of movement, such precision, and such strength into those arms, it's a shame to see it be limited to "pick up object, crush object, put down ruined object".

    Got a few ideas for upgrades:
    1. Gentle operation.
    This power loader is destructive and powerful. It will be interesting to see it do something that isn't destructive easier. Like that egg challenge, or pick up an egg from the ground and put it on a precise place on a table without breaking it. For the extra challenge: do it without someone looking from the side who directs the operator. Operator judgement alone.
    2. It seems like it can be tipped off very easily. Maybe more weight at the bottom could help?
    3. All terrain mode.
    Navigating through tougher types of terrain.

  • @Derekloffin
    @Derekloffin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +253

    One thing I think you need on this thing is a 'no bend' mode of some kind. In other words, a setting you can switch on that makes it function like it was meant to in the movie, working as a loader, where bending what you're loading would be exceedingly counter productive. So this would probably ensure arm movement, wrist movement and even claw movement don't exceed certain resistance forces potentially damaging whatever you're trying to move. It would be particularly good if it had presents, but also some custom setting so you can dial it way down for your eggs, and dial it way up for combating a queen xenomorph, as you do.

      It's all in operator skill

    As a 360 excavator I would say it needs longer to arms to distance the operator from the target more and to improve functionality, also an excavator style blade to stop damage to the power loader itself and also to assist with picking things up or moving them. I would also suggest a larger counterweight or a counterweight that could move further away and nearer towards at the rear of the vehicle to cope with larger weights being moved or picked up. One other thing would be a stronger undercarriage and wider tracks to allow for these upgrades and for versatility on moister terrain. Finally an engine upgrade to account for the things I’ve suggested. It’s a great job to even complete this thing though so credit where it’s due guys! Ps it needs a cup holder

    To all those who are saying that forklifts are already good at everything, forklifts require pallets or pallets like bottoms to really work, something like this, while not perfect in this iteration, could possibly eliminate pallets entirely in some applications. Also with some additional features this could work with pallets too, and most of the cost would decrease with mass production. It could be an extremely useful side grade to forklifts or a complete upgrade depending on how many features of forklifts are integrated into it.

You could make a wood splitting attachment so it could split with one hand and stack with the other, it could have forks attached and be able to move object much more easily in a warehouse or something, you could put a bucket on it so it would pretty much be a skid loader, somebody smarter than me could probably think of more real world uses for it. Not only did you complete an amazing passion project for the sake of entertainment but you've also developed an entirely new technology that up until this point was only theoretical. I really hope you guys try to implement this device into the actual workforce and maybe get in contact with CAT for production. I would love to see Powerloaders everywhere one could be used, especially with the Hacksmith logo glistening in the light!

    The Powerloader is so cool. And if you want upgrades ideas (from the mind of a non-enginier) here are some:
    some extra weight at the bottom so its less wobbly in rare occasions like 19:30,
    an optional leg guard, door thing,
    a protective window in the front of the cage,
    side mirrors, cup holders, tool holder for when you need to fix the loader,
    a drill arm?

      I was going to write that. I've seen people get injured just horsing around with a forklift that has a UL/CSA approved enclosed cab and guard. Seeing Bogdan with his bare legs out gave me the "someone's going to get hurt" feelings. It needs a full cage, and one with an analysis done to ensure it will survive a fall forward. Bursting hydraulics under pressure can cut skin and will kill you if the oil gets in your blood stream. It needs a screen on the flanks of the cab.

    • @bennyfisher9157
      @bennyfisher9157 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe they could also find a way to protect the hydraulic tubes because they look susceptible to getting pinched or severed.

    A couple things I noted. One, in the shop it was amusing to see y'all hunting for whatever might be acceptable to sacrifice for the purposes of "science".
    Later, when attempting to pull the door off the car and there was an audible pop-that's why firefighters have to be so careful when working with Hurst tools, trying to get patients out. That's the side airbag line popping, which has been known to seriously injure or kill firefighters.
    Personally, I would have stayed back farther while fiddling with the car. Particularly once I'd seen just what it was previously capable of doing.
    Really, really cool to see this build come to completion.

    I can't imagine how proud, relieved and excited you guys truly are to have completed this massive project. It turned out really well and I a ton of fun I am sure.
    Seeing how you guys work away at that car, it actually seems kind of reasonable to have a "picker" like that to disassemble cars for scrap processing.
    It's not an unrealistic approach and that is why I love it!
    Another alien head and Sigourney Weaver crushing it would be bad ass. I wonder if she is actually interested.

    Here is an idea for an upgrade. You said that forklift is better, which it is, than powerloader for the task of moving stuff. but what if you want it to work like a forklift? You have 2 independent arms. The problem is keeping those two arms aligned when lifting, so you bend stuff. My idea is to program a button that when pressed a code would align those two arms vertically (higher one drops, lower one rises; they meet in the middle relative to each other automatically) and lock them relative to each other. You could still move the wrists independently left/right, and maybe not rotate.

    This is absitively posolutely redonkulous! But it goes to show that once upon a time, movie props had real thought behind them to be real usable things. Just watching this video, the capabilities of such a machine, in the hands of a live OR of a REMOTE operator, are impressive. The precision that it can handle, combined with the range of motion possible, and that STRENGTH. I could see real companies like CAT approaching Hacksmith Industries for the rights to mass produce this. Even at the ridiculous prototype costs (let alone at future mass production cost reductions) I could see real construction sites, rescue teams, or even warehouses wanting one on-site. Awesome work Hacksmith Industries team!
