- Another drum duet this way: • Pyhtiö's drum duet #1
Equipment:
Tama Starclassic Performer (birch) 20"/10"/12"/14"
Remo Acousticon 13"x3" snare
Yamaha Oak Custom 22"/12"/14"/16"
WorldMax Black Dawg 14"x5" snare
Remo Emperor coated tom batter heads, Ambassador clears on bottoms.
Aquarian Superkick I (batter) / Remo Powerstroke3 on Oak bass
Remo Powerstroke3 (batter) / Remo Ambassador ebony on Starclassic bass
(Remo Ambassador coated / Ambassador snare on snares)
Recorded with a single Rode NT-5 room mic. Used some compression.
I have played every series yamaha has out and the oaks by far are my favorite of them all!
A big bass drum makes a drumset look really good but I switched back to a set with a 22" because it's a bit easier to play, carry around and setup. And it's more versatile. If I didn't have to worry about money or space, I'd definitely keep a 24" kit.
I want to thank you for putting this comparison on you tube. Oak Custom hands down; bigger, fatter, and clearer sound. thanx again.
yamaha all the way! these babies sing!
The starclassics are heavier, because of die-cast hoops and the tom suspension. Heads on both kits were emperor coated batter / ambassador clear resonant. I think the Starclassics had a bit tighter tuning.
nice room u got there. More of these duo band!!
Nice job.
Awesome stuff.
Thanks! Yes, the Oak is my main kit. Haven't tried Live custom, but I heard it has thicker shells so I'm not really interested in them. The actual reason for my lack of interest is that if I'm going to upgrade, I'm probably going for maple. Haven't owned a maple kit yet..
The Yamaha makes the starclassic sound like a beginner kit I'd actually prefer a newer stage custom or tama superstar. The old performers were the red headed step child of tama they have such a narrow sweet spot and finicky tuning. I've own 2 of them there are a ton of headache free kits that sound way better and do more for the current market value of the kit. Sell it, keep the Yamaha as the only kit, and get a bop kit or Tom to bass drum converter for the Yamaha for versatile gig size or just save towards other stuff. (If you haven't sold it already) it's not good by today's standards.
great video, i like the tama best, great drumming.
I had that same LOTR poster.
Nice pocket and great timing.
Tama
The mic that you see in the video is not in use. I used only one room mic that's positioned near the camera.
Tama wins, yamaha always have that compression-like sound. Maybe because of deeper kick drum
WOW Both sound good but the Yamaha wins hands down IMO. Especially when your playing both at the same time, The Tama seems thin to me compared to the Yammie. What type heads do you have on the Oaks both batter and reso's and how are the drums weight wise, is the yammie heavier or lighter than the tama? I currently gig a Mapex saturn that is freakin heavy especially the BD. Great video and awesome drumming too, I really enjoyed it. what are the sizes of the BD's
I prefer the uniqueness of the TAMA sound, maybe you should have made a larago and between Tama Starclassic and YAMAHA maple custom...
the right one
I recently stumbled onto your youtube while watching vids on JP's drumming. I have a tama imperail star, but I really want to be like JP and he uses two floor toms one high tom like you but has a 26" BD now. Sounds really good. I was looking back at your 6/8time(drink to the dead)/ 4/4 time video and your old silver kit has a 24" which is pretty close. I was wondering how you feel about the bigger bass drums. Would you also like to play a big bass but most kits only have 22" option?
Fantastic video. Do you use the Yamaha Oak custom as your main kit ? Also wanted to ask what you think of the Live Custom Oak they are replacing the Oak Custom with as I am thinking of getting the Oak Custom set. Thanks !!!
Cuál es la tama y cuál la yamaha
XD
it looks like the mic. is only on the black kit......
Wow, you Twins play nice. :p
Sorry the audio quality of the recording doesn’t do any justice to give a valid comparison. But thanks for sharing.
TAMAHA
(korokke pan) good choice.
Cool
I'll stay w Tama Portnoy signature kit. They just kill anything I've owned over many years.
is the tama in the right
Yamaha all the way BUT not sure about the mic placement for the Tama set. Seems a bit unfair.
Nättiä! jos sulla on aikaa, käy tsiigaa mun uudehko rumpuremix!
If your gonna compare live custom oak Yamaha kit, gotta go against Tama starclassic Bubinga or Tama starclassic BB. I played the bb’s side by side to a live custom and the B.B. destroyed the live customs to my ears.
I'm a Tama guy all day. But in this vid the Yamahas take it.
Agreed. I'll always be a die hard Tama fan boy but the Yamaha sounds better in this vid.
it's cool, save the aggression for rocking. :)
I was told he forgives all kinds of stuff. e.g. cloning yourself and playing drums with the clone.
U know what Im going to pearl instead👌😂
Tough to beat Yamaha.
The yamaha drums sounded better but the cymbals on the tama kit were better...
the yamaha kit is the perfect one
the Tama needed a tune up, badly.
tama
yamaha
yamaha
Ouch, that's bad. Watching drumpörn on youtube wouldn't be the same..
which is which?!?!?!
The green one is the Tama.
Very late response but I hope you see this. I am looking at buying the Yamaha oak kit, and this video really made up my mind in favour of them. Great concept and great playing. Thanks for the video.
TAMA
Yamaha...on this video.
The Yamaha oak destroyed the Tama kit
Nah, I won't.
Not a good comparison video
The green one is Yamahaa !!!!!!!
Krasimir Savov the green one is the TAMA. look at the badge on the black drums.
Tama kick is better. oak Toms blow away the Tama. I prefer the snare of the oak as well but not by much. I usually don't use stock snares anyway. kindve unfair to give the Tama a little.. China? as a hi hat replacement haha like what
