I dilute USMC black with 50/50 dye and water. This causes the dye to dry pretty quick but also to turn into a powdery substance on the surface. This powdery layer wipes 95% percent away and makes the leather appear distressed or aged. Then applying your actually dye or gel gives a similar effect. Although you want to go lighter for the second dye otherwise the work doesnt show as well.
You can 100% get away with one of the "basic leather kits" sold on Amazon. The most of what I use came from a basic starter kit Tandy makes. I also made an episode on leather crafting without any tools, if you wanted to give it a shot without buying anything but the leather.
Thanks for the info. I will definitely check out that vid as well. I thought maybe the quality of those amazon kits isn’t great? I could be wrong. Thank you.
A warning about the Amazon tool kits. They will likely not come with any instructions or leather. The starter kits from Tandy will have both and are very thoroughly explained.
@@jarekmace1536 yeah, I guessed that, I had considered buying one of them, but I thought exactly what you said. Instead, I’ll probably just buy some leather from a reliable source like Tandy, and then buy more specialized tools in the future if I find out that I really like leatherworking.

Great tip! I will definitely give that a go!
Thank you! Love the aged leather technique for belts, wallets and portfolios.
Love the aged look! I knew that process but the tip on how to make the dauber was new. Great idea! Thanks Cl3ver 👍😀
Glad you liked it! Thank you for watching!
You can use an a small air spray gun as well works for more or larger items. works to apply resists or top coats as well.
Great results, I will try this technique. Thank you!
So dilute tea and coffee work well for paper. I haven't tried it with leather but it should work.
Cool video being in front of a camera suits you well. Love the leather dying tips!
Very nice technique, I like how you used the rolled up cloth to apply the dye
Thanks!
Whatcha drinkin’ there? Looks tasty! 😁

Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
Wow, really helpful.
Cool idea!

Love your videos, especially the Dieselpunk.Ro leather hat with runes. Where'd you come up with this idea?
Was that Kirk and Sweeny I saw? That's my favorite rum!
It was! Great eye!
Tandy definitely needs to sponsor you! Also, what do you recommend buying to start in leatherworking? I was thinking of getting into it.

I had amazing success with this short lesson. Unfortunately I can't post a photo.
Can you use the brown over a blue leather chair?
Hi Dieselpunk has another way to age leather with felt pad and bees wax.
Have you done a video on worldbuilding?
4:05 to 4:09 that bottle looks neat though i so want to see it encased in leather to look like a water bottle idea
That's Kirk & Sweeney aged rum, very tasty and makes a killer (though heavy) potion bottle.
nice trick :)
