    The music was awful. I would much rather hear what the conservator had to say about what they were doing as they demonstrated. That would have been much more helpful. What was the temperature of the water? What exactly was the person removing from the surface of the photo? What are the cautions as the photos were removed? How successful is the process? Anyway, you get the idea. Thank you, though.

    As a person who literally has a large rubber maid type storage box completely filled with photos passed on from everyone this video will prove a lifesaver. I have tried a few things but not many as success had been limited. Never would have thought of cool steam. Hot steam definitely does not work. I would have been afraid to place them in water bath as well. Thankyou.

    Luke warm water in a container let them soak 1 hour. Turn them and don't pull them apart like that. Let the water separate them. Distilled water is best.

      I tried separating a modern photo from glass with lukewarm water. It didn’t even begin to budge after an hour. It took a week to soften enough to release, even with regular, gentle mechanical separation at the edges. By that time water had gotten into the ink layer and utterly destroyed the photo. It was on curved glass, so it couldn’t be scanned before separation attempts. Thankfully, it was a crappy photo, but the result was still disappointing.

    Does this method work with regular color photos with a matte or glossy finish?

    I'll see if this works. However, unfortunately the old photos that are sticking together also have a horrible moth ball odor. A cousin had stored them in moth balls in Florida. My aunt had COPD and had to store them in her garage in New York because she couldn't have them in her house. I also am allergic so they have also been in my garage. They are in waterproof plastic boxes & in an insulated closet. I can't even touch the photos without gloves it's so bad. I have a heated storage unit now so I'm going to take them there as soon as the activated charcoal bags arrive. I'm going to try that. Has anyone else ever had a problem with old photos reaking of moth balls? And any success getting rid of the smell?

      It is a Spatula not a sharp knife, Just carefully pushing up and down to help in the separation process.

    The company that caused this damage to my pictures should pay to have my pictures fixed! Like I could stay focused long enough to do any of these dam steps. After my basement was flooded the insurance companies brought in a company to dry out the concert.. This caused bad condensation so my pictures that I had in and organized box are now all stuck together. 25 year plus my father's life time of old black and white photos damaged. Its so heartbreaking when timeless treasures gets destroyed!

      I am really sad to hear that. But the good news is it can be back again. Search for photo conservator near you and sure he can restor your photographs back.
      Best wishes

    Hi, do I have to use cold steam?

    • @sherif3afifi
      @sherif3afifi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Using the cold steam was one of the trys to minimize the moisture impact to the photo surface, but it was not enough in this case as explained in the video.

    • @sherif3afifi
      @sherif3afifi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you are taking about the spatula, you can buy it from any medical tools supplier in your area, you ask them for dental spatula, it comes in different sizes and shapes. However, if not I would suggest to use a thin plastic card (old credit card for instance), or if you have a rounded - but not sharp - knife it suppose to help if you used it carefully.
      Anyway, It would be nice if you share your experience here once you tried a different and available tool, you may solve this problem for others as well.

    • @sherif3afifi
      @sherif3afifi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably yes, if it is silver gelatin, but it needs longer time and more care while removing it . However, never leave the prints in a water unwatched and remember, water has its effect on the gelatin prints.
