Damn @ the uppercut & slip @ 1:50. Speed, quickness, defense, balances, reflexes, etc. all exhibited in a matter of seconds. Floyd is pure poetry in motion in the ring.
I love how Jim Lampley talked about Oscar beating Pernell Whitaker when he actually did better against Mayweather Jr. than he did against Whitaker. Anyone who watched his bout against "Sweet Pea" at least with their eyes open knows that De La Hoya lost that one and never looked good in any part of that fight.
at that particular aspect of it. As marquez said about mayweather he doesn't like to fight - getting involved in a battle is a different skill, check out sugar ray vs duran the brawl in montreal, he wanted to prove he had another dimension to his boxing in order to prove greatness. He didnt just want to do what mayweather does, cuz he new it was one dimensional. Check out tyson his amazing power was his thing. Marquez said pacman hits harder - now that's someone who fought both saying it
To this day people still say ODH won this fight. They clearly neglect to look at the numbers of "power punches" between rounds. Mayweathers accuracy is astounding and in this fight he threw a great many jabs that mostly landed.
In rd. 7 Oscar saw that Floyd was a bit winded and start to open up LEADING with the jab and scored with it. But Floyd had a gut check and willed himself back to doing what he was doing before. This was the moment just like with Mosely, Mayweather had to grow from the adversity plus ODLH showed his greatness in this round.......I wish Pac would do the same
wow, i didnt notice this before, but those are Reyes gloves that they are using. Those are traditionally "punchers" gloves, which mayweather never uses because of his hands. Reyes gloves has less padding/protection than Grant gloves (May's usual brand).
dieago , hatton undeafted, balomir had just beat zab juda and somone eles plus its hard to say when it somone prime because some fighters get better with time plus when was or is floyds prime all the time ? or when he was younger
Oscar tried to pull something slick when he fought Floyd. Made him move up to his weight class at light middleweight, chose the ring size, he chose the gloves and gave Floyd some 10oz pillows and Floyd still beat him EASY.
Round 6 was a good round. I gave it to Oscar for landing the most clean effective punches. Caught Mayweather slipping a few times but Floyd also had his moments. I would like to call round 7 even with both fighters having their moments but if I had to choose Id give it to Oscar since he was more aggressive. Hard right hand for Floyd at the end of this clip in the 8th round
The more I box myself and learn about boxing the more I love watching and breaking down this fight. It's awesome to see BOTH Mayweather and DLH THINKING their tactics while in the midst of fighting. Oscar seemed (imo) to want to win rd. 6 using HIS defense, not really concerned with trying to land a big shot on Floyd because at this point he was down 4-1; he had to start winning some rounds in other ways
@ph1484 He does have a particular offense he likes to use. That doesn't make it money. You must have an array of offensive options to combat the different styles and techniques you'd face fight to fight. That's why he focuses on everything being money. You say you counted 1 pull counter, and the lead left hook was taken away. Now just how just many "money punches" does Floyd actually have then? That's why he comments that he does what it takes to win.
2:18 DLH backs Money into the ropes, starts going after his body, then sometime during the flurry he realeases an uppercut that doesn't connect all the way but you see mayweathers head snap back a little because it made some contact, as soon as it does, he leaves. I know its natural instinct to get away from the ropes, but he's let DLH back him up plenty of times before and actually withstood his flurry's. In my opinion he doesn't look to cover the uppercut.
@whos2beisthis When did I say nothing is working? I said his typical go-to-moves aren't working - for the first 8 rounds at least. What's so amazing is that Floyd is such a well-schooled fighter that he still finds a way to win. Many other fighters that have their best weapons neutralized would fold.
no and neither were all the pundits talking about sugar ray's need to be seen to be a 'fighter' to be able to beat duran by fighting durans fight up close and personal, something mayweather has never done.
Oscar hadn't made 145 ever as a WW... he had been below that weight 12 years before fighting MP... he was a year older than in this fight... at a weight he couldn't make over a decade ago. Roach trained ODH in this fight... Oscar had been gasing for a while. so when Roach knew he could get him to drain into 145... it was a done deal. Roach even said the same thing... he doesn't hide the fact that they try to stack the chips for MP in every way. ODH was said to have IV holes before the fight also
I see a lot of weaknesses in mayweather that pacquiao would be able to exploit. Oscar had his opportunities but just doesn't have the power, accuracy, handspeed, combinations, footwork, and stamina like pacquiao does. Pacquiao would have definitely hurt or knocked mayweather out in one of those dozen times mayweather got caught on the ropes.
Floyd won this fight... on the score cards for sure. But, De la hoya gave him some headaches and made him uncomfortable.. you can see it on Floyd's face. With that said, Mosely, who beat oscar twice, may have what it takes to beat May. Although, after seeing the Marquez fight, May looked better than ever. I can't wait till May 1st!
at 1:20 they show Floyd land a counter right in the middle of Oscar flurry...Immediately after that he lands a harder right hand and Oscar loses his balance, yet they cut away right before he lands it.
I think you missed the point: both fighters threw exactly the same number of punches, one landed 24%, the other 57%. And yeah, if you throw 1 punch that lands and the opponent throws 50 punches and none lands, the guy landing is the greater boxer.
@logic2000 What Im trying to say is that it was nothing Ray did to stop Marvin from punching and there was nothing PBF did to stop SSM from punching. Please kill those misconceptions in your mind, please.
If you run around the ring constantly, throw one punch that lands, that means you have a 100% strike rate and you don't get hit but it doesn't mean you're a great boxer, think about it.
When you get hit so much, you dont want to throw punches, miss and be hit hard. Of course you are gonna think twice about throwin a punch. You ever think about that????
If anybody really pays attention.....when ever Oscar lands something effective or slightly better than what people usually land on Mayweather, Mayweather comes back with something super hard and fast.......Just pay real close attention..........You could tell Nazim Richardson studied tapes of Mayweather because this is where he got his Dragon with fangs spittin fireballs metaphor from.
@puertorricanstar he is trying but Mayweather has one of the best defense's in boxing. it's easier said than done. I'm sure many of Floyd's oponments all realised so later in the fight when they just keep getting countered and not being able to land solid punches on their own.
@logic2000 SSM just didnt stop punching because of what PBF did. He just didn’t throw punches. Why would he be reluctant to throw punches all of a sudden against a fighter who isn’t a threat punching power wise? And against the same fighter who he just bombed in the 2nd rd. Same thing happened in the Hagler vs Leonaard fight. We all knew who hagler was and what he was made of. So when he had the chance to finish Leonard when he was up against the ropes, why didn’t he?
I agree. If Mayweather fought in the 80's, he would have had a lot of contracts to duck. Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Aaron Pryor and Roberto Duran would have been chasing him around the streets of Las Vegas with a pen and clipboard!
I've noticed no one ever throws an uppercut against Mayweather. I've gone back all watched all his fights the past years starting with this one, no one ever attempts to throw an uppercut. Not Hatton, not Mosley, Not De La Hoya, Not Marquez. ESPECIALLY NOT ORTIZ(he tried to use his head), i mean they throw it by impulse, but i just got to wondering, Mayweather doesn't really look to cover it, the few times someones actually thrown the swing it, it connects(when they don't do it by impulse.)
@youngwisdom681 When is the clip dated???I know initially he said he would not but just recently he agreed to do the testing all the way up until the fight. And why does he ask Pac-Man to do this but he didnt ask any of his other opponents??I agree hes a freak in terms of conditioning but he aint on the dope.He would have been caught by now, just ask Fernando Vargas.
@BGChamp2019 u make very Fair points........But we agree to disagree when it comes to shane.......Shane hurt Floyd but Floyd gathered himself and was actually the aggressor the 30 seconds of the that round.....I just find it interesting that how Shane fought (arguably) the best fight of his career against Margarito than all the sudden, his very next fight, he fights Floyd and he was washed up........Theres a reason why all these guys that fight Floyd, Floyd takes away his oppenents best weapon
@ph1484 My point is that Floyd's only go to moves are moves that lead to wins. Everything he does in the ring is strategic. It only appears that it's not working. It's all a set-up. You can't compare other fights to this one because they are against different opponents. Therefore, things are naturally going to be different. Those so called go to moves are what Floyd does when he's cruising. "I do this -- he does that; he does that -- I do this. GOTCHA! Your a** is mine!" - FLOYD MAYWEATHER, JR.
@upcominboxa330 Was just thinking the same thing! Oscar is actually a well schooled fighter even though his defense looks weird. A lot of Floyd's little, subtle go to moves are not working. Notice when Floyd comes inside. He wacks the overhand right once to get a little separation and then the second overhand right with power - just like in the Gatti fight. The feint jab-left hook up top-move isn't working either (Marquez KD and Corrales). Even his jab to the body-OH right is blocked by DLH.
@logic2000 He's unorthodox. he's predictable to JMM. Not PBF. The huge misunderstanding that people have is just because JMM outboxed PAC, doesnt mean that PBF wil. JMM and PBF are to different types of boxers. The reason why PAC is hesitant against JMM is because JMM always beats him off of the exchanges. PBF doesnt fight like that. He will not throw loads of punches off of the exchange like JMM. Plus you have to take size into account also. You just said styles makes fights right?
As a pacquiao big fan, you cant deny Mayweather fought the better de la hoya, and mosley But i still prefer pacquiao's entertaining fighting. If mayweather and pacquiao were to fight i think pacquiao would win some rounds, but mayweather would pull off the victory, but both great fighters!
@logic2000 so you ask why would he be washed up off of a great performance???????? C'mon man. Use some sense here. They guy was 37/38 years old and nobody wanted to fight him. Not even PBF. He didnt fight a whole year and a half and you got the nerve to ask a question like that? Why didnt PBF call out SSM instead of JMM after he came out of retirement? PBF only calls fighter out who he knows or thinks he has an advantage over. He doesnt fight the fighters who are the best at that time.
@mrjones501 I think Mayweather would win. More power and accuracy. Whitaker was dodging pretty well but didn't have that kind of snap behind his punches. Also, Mayweather was actually sparring with Pernell couple of times as an amateur. Dont get me wrong, i respect Pernell..its just an opinion ;-)
@whos2beisthis No, it didn't appear as if it wasn't working - it wasn't! Oscar took away his money punches, the pull counter - I counted one all fight - and the lead left hook. Good job by Oscar. What sets Floyd apart is the fact that he's got soooo many other advantages that do work. Conditioning, for one, timing, movement, intelligence, like you allude to, etc. etc. But Oscar did fight him well.
Mayweather by unanimous decision i guess. Sweet Pea didnt have a power behind his punches and sometimes,he was only about showboating (effective showboating :D ). Anyway, they both have/had their specialities-Whitaker dodging and Mayweather shoulder roll. Just my opinion...It would be great fight.
@:43 seconds. Sorry man, numbers don't lie. If a boxer is landing over 50% of his punches against his opponent, while both are throwing the same amount of punches and the boxer is making his opponent miss and only land 27%, the fight isn't very close. This is why I tell people to watch fights with the audio turned down because its easy to be influenced by the crowd and the commentators.
@boxingjunkie0310 Mayweather tore his rotator cuff that day. He still didnt lose to Castillo simply because Castillo did nothing but fight dirty from the first minute to the last
@logic2000 No. I totally disagree about SSM. That wasnt the SSM we all are use to seeing. There are so many lies about PBF's ability, just to broaden his already established image. There lies. No one is afraid to get hit by PBF. he is not power punching threat. So I believe thats a huge lie. Castillo doesnt box better than DLH either but he performed much better against PBF. See, this is what a lot of people dont understand about PAC.............................
the crowd was so biased. whenever mayweather landed shots..they were like..eh...but when oscar throws a flurry while mayweather blocks them, they go crazy
Bfchamp. If a fighter can't adjust in the ring, and what they are doing isn't working they will lose. You brought up hatton and ortiz. They both kept coming forward and got knocked out. Especially, hatton, he didn't adjust at all. All great boxers should be able to adjust. Check out dwyerboxing on TH-cam.
@logic2000 Oh.....Wait, I know what youre gonna say? “PBF took away his best weapon. PBF was going to counter him and make him reluctant to throw punches”. That’s a bunch of crap. Nothing PBF did stopped DLH from initiating did it? Castillo still kept coming forward and throwing punches. So did Ortiz and so did Hatton. Fighters don’t change the tendencies of other fighters no matter how good they are. Especially if theyre not a power puncher PBF is not.
@mrjones501 it would be the a classic technical fight but EXTREMELY boring. If your not into the sweet science and fundamentals like most...it would suck.If you are like me...it would be a dream
@Bittersweet659 he didnt run he avoided his punches, like the other guy said what he suppose to do stand there and take a punch??? thats for dummies dont hate cause the man has defense
@hunip098 hell yea. Oscar was only in the fight cause of his jab and all the other punches that the crowd was shouting at wasn't even landing. I thought Oscar won 4 rounds at the most. Floyd CLEARLY won at least 8 rounds. That split decision was just a Golden Boy move once again but it did NOT work
Floyd Mayweather dominated Oscar De La Hoya, clearly out boxed him. I respect Floyd for agreeing to everything DLH demanded. heavyweight 10 ounce gloves, 154lbs, and less than 50% of the PPV money. It was Floyd's biggest payday but DLH demanded the lion share of the money which he deserves. even though Floyd was ranked #1 P4P DLH was still the PPV king, now Floyd is the PPV king and promoter so Pacquiao should have taken that career high 40M
during those flurries, oscar shud of thrown some power punches to floyd shoulder and try to get it weakened so he cant keep it close when oscar presses him. poke that jab in floyds face, start a series of punches and mess up that shoulder.
I feel sorry for Oscar. He had Freddie Roach as his trainer learning all his boxing secrets. Then he got beat up in this fight only to later face Manny Pacquiao with coach roach in "other" corner! And then Oscar suffered an even worse beating in that fight. Like I said I feel sorry for Oscar.
@bird4200 Thats the same thing Ive always said about beating PBF. If you get a fighter in there to fight him who's agressive with physical strength, has hand speed, good footwork, a jab and power, then they have a chance. SSM were all those things except 1 (jab) and I really believe SSM didnt have that killer instinct like he did in other fights. He just didnt fight on MAy 1st. But thats why PBF wont fight PAC. He knows PAC has a great chance to beat him because of these things I mentioned.
oscar's jab is overrated in this fight. great effective jab but people act like he hit floyd whenever he threw it. floyd stands in the middle of the ring and pushes oscar back a good amount of the time, hit him to the body etc. just didn't get credit cause he didn't tear up oscars face, but then that didn't happen at all to oscar till he fought forbes and pacquiao the next year.
@onlyjoetee i thought i was one of the few people who actually looked at that lol think after the ortiz fight it was down 2 15% for floyds opponents...shoot...floyd's difference on +/- is 31...next on the list is andre ward with 14...pacquiao is at 8...people land 29% against pac...ppl land 27% against ortiz...so u can imagine how the fight will go lol but floyds defense keeps improving...from 130-147 his opponents % dropped from 23% down to the 15 or 16% it is now...wheres pacs improvements lol
@logic2000 Thats the best part of his career! But he’s taking the huger bigger fights later on his career and you give him credit for fighting older fighters? NO! He don’t get a pass. If you pay attention to his career like you do his skills, youd see that he picks his fights and ducks and dodges opponents just like he does punches. Its been more than 3 occasions where he has ducked fighters. How many other undefeated fighters are there? Do u pay attention to them like u do PBF?
I remember when this fight originally happened, round 7 was when Oscar did something I wish he would've kept doing: throwing jabs to Mayweather's chest. I wish more fighters would use that tactic against him
Mayweather always seems almost afraid to really get in there and slug it out, and that's what turns people off from him. I know it's not smart to stand there and take shots, and that's not Floyd's deal, but just the same it turns the fans off from giving him any respect. I think if a fighter put pressure on him, and not just running into him(hatton), but throwing punches along the way, he would lose by decision. Cotto has his hands full, but anything can happen in the ring.
@logic2000 So that doesnt neccessarily mean that PBF will perform against PAC the way he did against JMM. PAC is a lot quicker in small spaces and throws loads of punches off of counters and have TREMENDOUS footwork. The #1 thing you need to beat PBF and he might have better footwork than he does. Im not saying he will beat PBF because its a toss up. But, he does have a HUGE chance. And SSM was the guy to beat him. I SWEAR. He just didnt throw punches. To beat PBF, you have to fight this man.
@boxingjunkie0310 you obviously do not know that if you think someone should have got the decision win and didnt, you can debate on that, but if they lose to the same person again than you can not say anything it was verry close the first time but mayweather really won the second time making him the better boxer of the two
LOL @ money cheesing at him at 6:08 , sure it's prolly considered disrespectful or w/e but it's darn sure entertaining and why my man money mayweather is the coolest cat in the game....1 word to haters, undefeated
Sweet pea won.
No doubt
hahaha @ :12 when floyd lands that punishing right, the looks on all the peoples faces behind him is priceless.
@phatty1003 good points, and also,if he couldnt find a gameplan for oscar to beat floyd, what gameplan is he gonna come up with for pacquiao??
dla meksykana nie ta epoka
at that particular aspect of it. Marquez said pacman hits harder - now that's someone who fought both saying it
@hamhawk67 hes able to make the may 5th date hes not going to jail till june.
@bimmer666 Thanks. ...& no need to apologize - lol. Language here is universal, "We just talk boxing."
It was power shots, but your point is WELL taken
That uppercut that Mayweather threw around the 1:50 mark was super fast.I personally think that he's faster than Pacquiao hands down.
To this day people still say ODH won this fight. They clearly neglect to look at the numbers of "power punches" between rounds. Mayweathers accuracy is astounding and in this fight he threw a great many jabs that mostly landed.

😅 love when they put the camera on the beautiful Milly and then put the camera on Floyd sr 😅

@misterjay85 thats your argument????...lol...that no one landed ad much as Oscar did on Floyd?
@boxingfan6
Thank you. This dude "BGChamp2019" made about 5 or 6 comments saying nothing at all. WTF is he talking about?
I see a lot of weaknesses in mayweather that pacquiao would be able to exploit.
@upcominboxa330 remember pacquiao fought margarito who weighted in at 165 while pacquiao was only 147 and pacquiao still won that fight
Yall Already Know that this was not maywether fightin de la hoya in his prime right ???
Dodged Cotto? Maybe look that up and think about that last statement again.
He still didnt lose to Castillo simply because Castillo did nothing but fight dirty from the first minute to the last
how much pay mayweather for this fight?
@logic2000 No. I totally disagree about SSM. That wasnt the SSM we all are use to seeing. There are so many lies about PBF's ability, just to broaden his already established image. There lies. No one is afraid to get hit by PBF. he is not power punching threat. So I believe thats a huge lie. Castillo doesnt box better than DLH either but he performed much better against PBF. See, this is what a lot of people dont understand about PAC.............................
Yea Mayweather had to agree to Oscar's terms for this fight. They used heavyweight 10 oz Reyes gloves.
the crowd was so biased. whenever mayweather landed shots..they were like..eh...but when oscar throws a flurry while mayweather blocks them, they go crazy
@FreshZerglings Judah had speed and power, Mosley had speed and power. It takes more than speed and power to win fights.
@futureproof28 He's like 85 years old. What do you expect?
@mrjones501 it would be the a classic technical fight but EXTREMELY boring. If your not into the sweet science and fundamentals like most...it would suck.If you are like me...it would be a dream
@Bittersweet659 he didnt run he avoided his punches, like the other guy said what he suppose to do stand there and take a punch??? thats for dummies dont hate cause the man has defense
Oscar wasn't landing and he was tired in like round 5, and people think he won wtf?
Floyd was playing "rope-a-dope" in the middle of the ring!
oscar's jab is overrated in this fight. great effective jab but people act like he hit floyd whenever he threw it. floyd stands in the middle of the ring and pushes oscar back a good amount of the time, hit him to the body etc. just didn't get credit cause he didn't tear up oscars face, but then that didn't happen at all to oscar till he fought forbes and pacquiao the next year.
@headacher haha hardowt like at the size of those things mayweather's wearing they look like 16oz sparring gloves
Agree, these haters look at Floyd as the Justin Bieber of boxing
@logic2000 Thats the best part of his career! But he’s taking the huger bigger fights later on his career and you give him credit for fighting older fighters? NO! He don’t get a pass. If you pay attention to his career like you do his skills, youd see that he picks his fights and ducks and dodges opponents just like he does punches. Its been more than 3 occasions where he has ducked fighters. How many other undefeated fighters are there? Do u pay attention to them like u do PBF?
Does anybody really think this extra weight on Oscar would have bothered Pacquiao? NOT!
I remember when this fight originally happened, round 7 was when Oscar did something I wish he would've kept doing: throwing jabs to Mayweather's chest. I wish more fighters would use that tactic against him
13 ounce gloves were used in this fight not 10.
oscar is throwing alot but mayweather is blocking about 70% of them
floyd is damn funny with that smile...
@westcoast4081 lol mayweather's pops looks like a thundercat
@mrjones501
I like both fighters, but come on man! I'd be out cold by round 3.
I have no doubt in my mind that this fight was fixed de la hoya isnt even trying to land on floyd
@boxingjunkie0310 you obviously do not know that if you think someone should have got the decision win and didnt, you can debate on that, but if they lose to the same person again than you can not say anything it was verry close the first time but mayweather really won the second time making him the better boxer of the two
sorry Larry that FM doesn't get hit enough for you. Merchant makes me dislike old people.
LOL @ money cheesing at him at 6:08 , sure it's prolly considered disrespectful or w/e but it's darn sure entertaining and why my man money mayweather is the coolest cat in the game....1 word to haters, undefeated
@snkammar2 no he didnt ..
lmaoooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they dont understand
