You know why I like you Dan and your content? You point out things like the beautiful strawberry colored squares. Endless people have walked over those and never appreciated them.
Always cool to see more coverage of malls integrated with non-retail institutions, like offices or education. One such mall up here in the Vancouver, BC area, Central City Surrey, has two floors of shopping, including several big box stores, with four levels of a university above it, acting as the main building of the major public uni's second campus. I'm also a big fan of over--the-street connecting walkways.
I remember how lively Strawberry Square was when I was little. All that's gone now but I agree with you that it's been preserved well. The facades of the original buildings were along streets with fruit names. The buildings were brothels and cheap motels, I love that part. Eventually, the pink tiles on the outside of the Square started falling off and hitting people on the head....it was lovely for visitors. Thanks Dan for sharing this. Like you, it takes me back to my childhood.
Seeing Dan’s sultry gait in the reflection of the entrance door of some mall always means the next 10-20 minutes of my life are going to be good. Thanks, Dan, you da best.
Hi Dan, If you're looking for stuff in central PA, on the outskirts of Sunbury, PA, there's an abandoned hospital and about half a mile down the road from it is an abandoned orphanage
During the mid 80s there was a science museum off the alley. It had the “whispering gallery” voice radar dishes, forced perspective illusion room, and some of the other typical kids museum exhibits. Looks like it’s still there (Whitaker Center). That clock was pretty epic. Thanks for unlocking some memories Dan!
I grew up in the Greencastle and Chambersburg area of Pennsylvania. I went to Strawberry Square one time for a 4th grade class trip in 1990 to that science museum. Harrisburg felt like the big city to this rural PA boy and the multi floor, Strawberry Square, was magical in my eyes. I never forgot the positive mark that experience left on me.

So many memories from this building, where my elementary and middle school would perform concerts during the holiday season. I loved the huge clock and the candy stand!
Haaaaa, I don’t believe it! I’ve actually *been* to this mall before! I was in Harrisburg to retrieve some records from the state conservation office and they recommended Strawberry Square for lunch. I recognized that food court IMMEDIATELY. Pretty sure I ate at that pizza restaurant - this was maybe 12 years or so ago, so this place has been going strong for awhile. Soooooo stoked I can say I’ve been to a Dan Bell Dead Mall.
This video is so interesting. I like that some developers are seeing the potential of the dying malls and converting them into usable space, like offices and living spaces. It’s smart because the setup is there to do a setup where it’s predominantly office space or living space, and they can use some of the space for a restaurant, a grocery store, or drug store.
I hear you. It's because they used to make these places with aesthetic architecture in mind designed to make people feel home with their cozy atmosphere. I was watching a walking tour of a mall opening up in Asia. It dawned on me why their malls are thriving. They put malls in downtown areas, so there's already foot traffic. They also build malls over subway and bus stations, bringing in more foot traffic. Most malls in the USA are way out in the suburbs with no public transit nearby, like the malls in my city (that are also dying btw)
Same here in Europe. When people say online shopping is destroying malls, it makes me wonder that it has to be something more than that? We don't put them way out of towns like they do in the states.
It's such a shame so many Malls are closed or closing, It Wasn't just about shopping it was about socialising, a lot people say amazon and online retail is to blame but it's also a lot of the stores having to pay overpriced rent, people not having as much disposable income, increased crime, the crash of 2008, the lockdowns of 2020, also there are a lot of areas which built too many malls in close proximity which caused over saturation, bit like Starbucks. Really well done, Dan! I went here a couple of times as a kid on school field trips from the State College area. There used to be a small science center on the second level I believe. Wonder if that used to be in the area you question being a movie theatre? And on the subject of State College, you ever consider a trip to the Nittany Mall? An older mall for being in the middle of Central PA, once home to four fairly decent anchors, possibly a mini casino in the future. But now, most certainly dead.
I grew up in Greencastle and Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. I went to Strawberry Square one time for a 4th grade class trip in 1990 to that science museum. 👍🏻 Harrisburg felt like the big city to this rural PA boy and the multi floor, Strawberry Square, left an indelible mark on me.
It was never really a mall on the scale compared to other malls. It just had a handful of retail stores, the food court and some other restaurants and businesses. It was connected to the existing Pomeroy's in the early years until the 80s or early 90s but that was the only big store. In Strawberry Square's lifetime, that area of Harrisburg rolled up the sidewalks after workers left for the day so it mostly saw action during weekdays from workers and kids on field trips. It actually looks to be in pretty good shape post Covid. Many state workers started working remotely but Harrisburg University added a lot of life to the area.
Hey Dan! They're tearing down Moorhead Center Mall soon (Moorhead MN). It's lost in the 70s. If you're ever out this way, just a heads up! ☺️ Great video!!!

8:45 That Strawberry Bull is really cool looking. The whole mall aesthetic reminds me a bit of the old Louisville Galleria before they gutted it and turned it into 4th Street Live.
This place is awesome! I wish I would have known it was there when we lived in PA. This reminds me of some of the old historic arcade style buildings that are luckily coming back into fashion in some city downtown areas across the country.
I don't know why but I love seeing outdoor spaces turned into indoor spaces and vice-versa. I'm sure its a pain in the ass to do, so that's why its uncommon.

You may have been here as a kid for the Museum of Scientific Discovery, a really neat hands-on science learning zone for kids that has been gone for a little while. I also used to come here in high school in the 90s… it had a decent pool hall, back when the few others in the area were really sketchy.

Check out the Hanover mall an hour south of Harrisburg. There was a fire in one portion of it that’s now torn down, and the parking lot is being use for trailer storage. It is the definition of a dead mall and could make for an interesting video I think
This building is so lovely & I'm glad that it's being maintained so well. Also I'm glad the clock sculpture wasn't destroyed. It would be awful if that amazing sculpture was torn apart like the Toys R Us Times Square TRex was.
Used to work in the PA Civil Service office up on the second floor about 15 years ago. I remember the Museum of Scientific Discovery up on the 3rd floor from field trips as a kid. Always loved the Square.
I’m fortunate enough to live in an area where my local malls have actually seen a boom in shopper. What had been keeping people away for a brief period was the uptick in smash and grabs. Cops finally put up a mobile command center for the holidays. City of Angels.
I remember going here to buy clothes back in 1988. I had lost a ton of weight! So, I needed a whole new wardrobe. I was going to spend the summer in California the next week. I remember that elevator, too.
Great video dude! I hope that you can also explore SouthWood Park Mall in Havensbrook, Indiana. It's an abandoned mall said to be inhabited by witches and where people were said to be missing. It would be amazing to make an episode about its interior!

such a silly, yet wholesome idea to theme a mall after strawberries. super glad to see its been repurposed.
you should explore Lakeside Mall in Michigan. it's a pretty dead mall with only like 4-5 stores left
I'm glad this mall is doing well and they were able to save the sculpture!
Ha! My job is located in one of the towers.
Have you been to the colonial park mall? That one's on the verge of shutting down.
Check out the Hanover mall an hour south of Harrisburg. There was a fire in one portion of it that’s now torn down, and the parking lot is being use for trailer storage. It is the definition of a dead mall and could make for an interesting video I think
Love the shot at around 9:10 paired with the Mallsoft/Vaporwave music.
This building is so lovely & I'm glad that it's being maintained so well. Also I'm glad the clock sculpture wasn't destroyed. It would be awful if that amazing sculpture was torn apart like the Toys R Us Times Square TRex was.
And a Merry Christmas to you Dan!!!!
It’s so refreshing to see a mall that’s not depressing! I’d love to visit here sometime! Love your videos Dan!
Used to work in the PA Civil Service office up on the second floor about 15 years ago. I remember the Museum of Scientific Discovery up on the 3rd floor from field trips as a kid. Always loved the Square.
I hope you visited the capital city mall in Harrisburg pa as well, all tenets have to vacate by the end of January.
That's the Harrisburg Mall. The Capitol City Mall is in Camp Hill and it's thriving.
Love these Spaces and the blending between the Architecture of the two buildings. This just looks like a Fun Space and glad it is still there. 😊
Loving the dead mall series. I wonder where you get the soundtracks for your videos? It adds quite a surreal ambience to the scenery.
back in the early 80s i always thought strawberry milk came from strawberry 🍓 cows
gambling room 9 minutes in is hilarious
I’m fortunate enough to live in an area where my local malls have actually seen a boom in shopper. What had been keeping people away for a brief period was the uptick in smash and grabs. Cops finally put up a mobile command center for the holidays. City of Angels.
I remember going here to buy clothes back in 1988. I had lost a ton of weight! So, I needed a whole new wardrobe. I was going to spend the summer in California the next week. I remember that elevator, too.
2:50 Wonderful, you can't have too many strawberry-colored squares!
Great video dude! I hope that you can also explore SouthWood Park Mall in Havensbrook, Indiana. It's an abandoned mall said to be inhabited by witches and where people were said to be missing. It would be amazing to make an episode about its interior!
Is dan still ok?
He has another channel called film it
Thank you Dan, I love seeing places like this thrive!
Nice job on this I love your videos it bring back childhood memories sadly there are not many malls anymore
I'm surprised there aren't more creepy Mall-room videos out there.
Cant wait to watch all these haven't watched for 3 years 🎉
