The Packers were blowing the Giants out, then, late in the game, Brett Favre and Michael Strahan had a brief interaction, which was followed by the record-breaking play. The Packers clearly allowed Strahan to have that record and this is the reason why Warren Sapp said a season later Michael’s record should have an asterisk next to it.
It’s a shame and a disrespect to Deacon Jones legacy that he’s not regarded as the all-time NFL sacks leader. Same with Bill Russell and blocked shots. Those records should rightfully belong to them.
I'm in Mark's camp...You compete to the very end. It's not about HOF. People would throw a fit if a team just rolled over and let Lebron James score 101 points
107.5 Sacks in a 11yrs. Two 20 Sack seasons. 41 Sack in a two year period. That doesn’t include the first 20 sack season he had. How is that dude not in a Hall of Fame is beyond me.
If you watch until the end, they talk about Pro Football Reference reporting on sacks prior to 1982. The most Jones had in a season was 22. They also point out that there were fewer passing attempts when Jones played, as opposed to Strahan, TJ Watt, etc., and that the season was 14 games. There's no doubting Jones's historical stature.
He needs to get over it at this point. But a lot of people will never deny that was not a sack. And The NFL should have ruled on it not being a sack. But Gastineau was there and the game was on national television ... so the NFL probably said just give it to him ... the whole thing closed the game. The better, more important story -- never told (and so far as I know never even asked about) -- is why Brett Farve was sacked so many times, so violently, in his final 2010 season with Minnesota. I have never seen a QB get hit so many times, so hard by un-blocked defenders as Brett Farve was in his final 2010 season with Minnesota. It was like watching a crash dummy. Intentional?
That was a weird team. Remember Farve had them trade a 2nd rd pick to the Patriots for Randy Moss, Moss was mad to have to go there even though he started his career there, so he threw a fit during a team meal, then showed up at a post-game press conference wearing a Red Sox hat (implying he still wanted to be playing in New England), and was finally cut after like 3 games!
