- A little series of photos comparing the "classical" bodybuilders to the bodybuilders of today.
Music* and bodybuilder's names are given at the end of the video.
Had to add a song from the youtube library because my music was disabled due to copyright issues. So the song names at the end are for no use anymore. Song by Dozer - "Big Sky Theory"*
12 years ago...It's been 12 years since I seen this and started my journey.. I've been injured. Had surgeries... loss relationships, stop boxing, loss almost all my strength and health..even hair..... And suddenly bounced back, I'm blessed to say it is all coming back.... now 12 years into today... I'm grinding again like it's 12 years ago. But with too much knowledge at my disposal..This is full circle. This is your journey, This. Is bodybuilding. Dont quit!
wxaviere1 wow, I was literally about to comment this same sort of thing. I use to box and after watching this when I was 13 back in 2008 I started my journey into becoming in shape. I had 3 kids along the way, heartbreaks, job changes, life’s challenges, now as i started training full on 1 1/2 years ago to get back into it, the pandemic happens and shuts down all the gyms. 2 months no gym and watching this gives me the fire to attack the gym just like the beginning 12 years ago.
'70s and '80s were the absolute best physiques, no doubt
Back then they had size and aesthetics. They actually look like they could chase you down and fck you up, unlike today's, where they can even run a 100m sprint
Ill agree with you on the fact that they looked more aesthetic back then but thats only because bodybuilding has evolved. Trust me just because they are more bulky doesnt make them slow.
Scott W Possibly not in a sprint but when Arnold and Franco were around they RAN on the beach, now cardio is walking at 2 mph for 10-15 minutes- Nearly impossible for anyone to train successfully in opposing sports such as cycling and BB, people need to choose what they like or what sport suits them
i love this vid so much but ive came back to it so many times just cos how good the song is and how well it goes with the vid
totally awesome. love the classic black and white pictures taken of arnie and franco. music goes well too. kudos to you guys for a video well done!
I think that the bodybuilders of yesterday looked thike the heroes of the tale, you know like superman or hercules. While the bodybiulders of tody look a bit like the villains of the tale, like Bane or Hulk. (Now this is just to get a picture. I know that Ronnie Coleman is the nicest guy.)
well both of them took steroids , some just got way bigger
Things have changed alright. Arnold and Columbu were kings. These guys today just have better drugs. Bigger isn't necessarily better.
Arnold was the king, I agree.
But Franco was never even close to it. He won only 2 times thanks to Arnold's retiring and lack of competition.
It is like Klitshko who refused to fight strong figters but still call themselves the best boxers who ever lived on the planet.
Franco is one of the most disproportionate bodybuilders the world has seen.
Yes, the main reason they are bigger is drugs not harder training- Some guys now weigh close to 300 and its from a few new drugs but look what happens to some of them- dead or they need to stop then look like the guy a the corner store.
I think its fair to say that in MOST cases the old schools did more with less but you still need BLESSED genes regardless, I knew a guy who placed 3rd a few times in Mr. America a few times, he admitted it was his peak, after a while you reach your bodies limit with or without drugs
Franco was on the worlds strongest men and did very well considering he was less than 200 lbs- Like anything HEIGHT plays a big role, not saying Arnold won because of height but if all are the same usually the tallest guy wins-I went to a Dickerson MANY years ago and he said a short guy needs to be better to make things equal- like any sport there is only 1 winner but its the journey that makes it worth while
2:24 you know the King is working for those 22 inch synthol free arms
Frank zane was the jack, Arnold was the king, Lou was the kings brother
stupid smart phone users have messed up today's gym.
best bodybuilding slide show of all time. watched this 20 times lol
Great collection of pics
yes iv been looking for this for ages thank you
todays body builders are bound to be bigger than they used to be as it is in human nature to strive to be the best. I mean the guys in this video are working so hard because in their life its survival of the fittest, the biggest and the best so yeah all in all i congratulate these guys on the video for being so determined to be the person they want to be :) great video :)
After seeing this video, I looked myself in the mirror and my heart just sank.
man i love this motivational videos... just makes you wanna live in the gym!
hey this was a great video....good music selection also
The first set of body builders, and the last guy, are they only ones that I truly respect
great video and excellent music
Big Sky Theory by Dozer. Bad ass song and goes very well with this video.
dislike button isnt necessary here.
This is by far the most motivational bb video!
brovo! good video 2 compare old bodybuilders to recent bodybuilders. i started training in '00 when ronnie won his secon mr O. ronnie is my favourate
I would kill to have a body like these people. Simply incredible and artistic.
Awesome video man.
You bring up a great point, I didn't even think to look at it from that perspective, but I'm sure your right.
Nice video, especially the words at the start.
Great Video.
Good video with great athlets Respect
One thing that you have to take note of is that during the on season (new bodybuilders), these guys have specific diets to make their muscles swell and make their veins pop more. During the off season, they guys look significantly smaller. I'm willing to bet that most of these pictures are during times of the on season.
@Ragekoolaid I like the description you offered here of how you boost your capacity at the end of a set. Intense exercise is more than the physical repetition of a movement --it takes the ability to tap into the depths of one's mind and spirit, and clearly you've managed to do that.
never fails to motivate !!!!!
Just stumbled across your video mate, absolutely love the content. Liked straight away, We should connect!
is one of the best video i ever........
WOW this is great
@southoreast good for you man. im planning on competing for my 1st time in the novice devision next competition at Muscle Beach in Venice. yah, seeing is im only 5'6"-5'7" i stacked on 35 lbs of lean mass my 1st 8 months. got to stay natural though. best of luck
1.06 that picture i will never forget. That's the most powerfull poses i ever seen today,
Thank You Arnold Schwarzenegger
wonderful vid...
I hope they don’t take this video off
Good job on the vid...........
this vid is excellent
Franco had upper Pectoralis that are insane. Never failed to amaze me!
The old bodybuilders were huge but at the same time still looked pretty good. Today's bodybuilders just look like something out of a comic book.
@rocketfingers67 what im sayin is just because they use steroids doesnt mean they just sit on the couch and watch tv all day. They still have to go to the gym everyday and diet right. People have this crazy notion that steroids make guys bigger with no alternative help. Thanks for your comment and have a nice day.
for all those asking for the song its dozer big sky theory
thank you again
Its' phenomenal what human body can be, with roids or not. But the drive and the passion, obsession to your body can make incredible things to happen.
wow its amazing its so much pain and effort into this just to look like freaks of nature...
was perfect!
Nice vid
Dozer-Big Sky Theory is the song playing. It's not mentioned on the end of the video and lots of people are asking.
@EPIK562 I agree bro. The old school look is what I'm shooting for for my first amateur competition at my school that takes place next year April. Wish me luck
@EPIK562 Thanks. I'm a six foot 3 ectomorphic guy with long arms and legs so I'm shooting to compete at 240 or 250 which means that I might go above that during off season. I take creatine and a mass gainer so yes, I am competing naturally. 30 lbs of muscle is alot more noticable on a shorter guy where on me, I't might not be so apparent. That's why I'm aiming so high.
they do many hours cardio per week ... but i didnt see them do that, so watch more videos, or buy jay cutler dvd to see one of the greatest bodybuilder doing cardio
Arnie still looked hell of a lot better than any of todays builders ever could. The definition, not to mention the biceps! I've never seen any human with biceps like Arnolds!
@EPIK562 You nailed it. It is really sad where bodybuilding has gone. Symmetry has been seemingly cast aside in favor of "subjective symmetry," i.e., mass upon mass (ty Dorian Yates).
Natural Powerbuilding, the mix of powerlifting with focus on technique, becoming progressively better in the 1RM of the big three and bodybuilding by train the main compound exercises in generall is what I recommend.
I personally had my months of cycling diff anabols back in the 80's for 2 years. I had the chance to move to GH and other muscle producers but I choose not. I'm the hight of Franco and would of been tough competing against the likes of Shawn Ray, Paul DeMayo, Eddie Robinson, who had the time and $ to dedicate.
My hats off to pro-bodybuilders you are my brothers of past, it was a great time. It was and is still a part of my life - it's in my blood, not pun intended.
ive never seen an image like 3:44. that was pretty sweet
@YangyStyle right, it only allows you do do more weight, you still have to work your ass off night and day
@satelng
Good for you then. Football basketball players are big because they are selected since their childhood and keep being selected throughout their life. And those who are bigger taller then others live almost no chances for smaller ones.
why do ppl lookup bodybuilding videos on youtube then hate on them lol . if you got haters you must be doing something right !!!!
arnold swarzeneger your my inspiration you are the best at what you do
i absolutely agree with you about that. now body weight exercises, (pushups pullups etc), those are useful. the way you will be able to move around, coordinated body,as well as finely toned. also for parkour if you know what that is. weightlifting is for...lifting weights...wow. I like Arnold, but i doubt him or any other body builder can do a quarter of what those Olympic athletes do for mens gymnastics. those muscles aren't just for show, you saw what they are capable of.
@westybb18 Your right, in modern bodybuilding conditioning and symmetry has less "points" than size does
i respect bodybuilders. i respect anybody who dedicates their life to somethin. i dont want to be a bodybuilder but i do want to be strong, athletic, and confident. these bodybuilders are just like everybody else except to the extreme. i cant help but wonder how big the human body can get without steroids. not saying everyone uses them, just wonderin what a pure human looks like.....
Yep things have changed, Arnold looked amazing!
Honestly i use to think they looked better in the 60's and 70's but now i realize that there are to many things missing on their bodies and I feel like most people can easily achieve a body similar to the old school bodybuilders in 5-10years of training. You dont become a professional bodybuilder to look nice and aesthetic YOU GO PRO TO BE THE BIGGEST PERFECTED MASS OF MUSCLE YOU CAN BE. legs back arms chest abs shoulders everything is huge on these guys bravo get bigger!
@southoreast best of luck bro. r u competing all natural? what weight r u aiming for competing at?
love de music ;)
@GangstaKul I agree, if you want to go to this level, no natural builder can achieve it.. Sad but true, this here is a form of building that requires extreme sacrifice ( side effects of steroids )
They arent casual Gym Bunnies.
Roids are a must if THIS is something someone wants to achieve.
Arnie is still and always will be the best ever. I will cry a bucket if he dies, a true legend, a really nice guy, a amazing personality, a role model for all of us disciplined builders.
You are absolutely right.
What did Franco columbo do at 4:22-25. What is it called that exercise and what does it focus on.
You say it, just as what i think about it, in the start! Very good description my friend. Nice pics to. Keep it up
this is just sick...
I'm a med school student and I can tell you with 100 percent confidence, that even though it's obvious that these guys are injecting anabolic steroids, they HAVE to work out extremely hard to sustain that new muscle growth. They might have an added edge with the steroids, but steroids aren't enough to have the kind of physique they carry. It takes very hard work and a lot of time in the gym, along with strict nutrition to look like these guys.
Old-school bodybuilders had a more classic and natural look. I wish we could return to these standards.
I'm 16 and accidentally lifted the weight holding thing and the 50 pound weights with one hand when it was stuck, so is there a chance i can get that big?I'm not huge but i do have a power lifer muscle structure after only 2 years of moderate occasional workouts.
I never understood how everyone dismisses this as a sport when it takes pretty much complete 24/7 discipline just to compete. There's no real off-season unlike other sports. And the argument about these guys being on steroids, but nobody ever mentions it as a negative in any other sport, even though they're used everywhere.
ppl who bodybulid is there any advice u have for not givin up, how do u keep goin?? also wats the name of this song
@MegaSid19 you also have to remember that when arnold did steroids it is when they first hit the market really, the side affect and what not really werent known you didnt even have to need them anyone could get them in there time, also they were far less advanced then as well body builders of today are at a great advantage as far as that concerened
what is a good product to treat stretch marks please
For those of you who don't know...Bodybuilding is called that because your literally building your body to its maximum potential and keeping everything symmetrical. It's bodybuilding...Not pretty boy competition. If your looking for that, then go to the mall and look at the little boys posing on the billboards of every clothing company and stop wasting your time here with the big guys. The pros now make arnold and the gang look like babies.
@curth75 actually i believe its dexter i dont remember his last name but he does look a little like ronnie coleman but no where near as big
@GowRox1 The guy at 5.30 is Branch Warren
I was born in the 90s and I still believe body building was in its true form in the 70s. It seems like the older body builders looked more natural. I'm not going to say steroids ruined the sport, they were even present at that time. But they def sent it in the wrong direction.
i'm still curious i'm still asking my self that what or who is their inspiration to build there muscles to hard
Today's bodybuilders are all about sheer size and mass, the freakier the better and the amount of steroids and GH they have to take is scary. The classical bodybuilders were the best and most inspirational . They still did use steroids sure but compared to the amount used by today's bodybuilders it's barely worth mentioning.
Vintage bodybuilding rocks!!
The sport has changed since Arnold's time. Back then thinks like symmetry, balance, good posing were important. Now all that seems to matter is how big you are. I'd swear some of today's guys are so top heavy if caught outside on a windy day they would tip over. ;-)
@cokeizzay 2:13 is called "Donkey Calf raises" made famous by Arnold.
wats the name of this song please let me know cause I gotta add it too my lifting CD
is there anyway I can save another person's playlist? I dunno how to do it, help anyone? Thank you in advance.
My first cycle I ever took was 100mg of Deca a week on a ten week program. I have been training for ten years and have been waiting for the right time. 100mg isnt much i know, but let me tell you I couldnt beleive the strenght and energy i had, ever had a pump? how bout on roids? dosent even compare. I took my PCT's and have ent touched it for a year, I just once wanted to experience the strength and power from this drug, and yes The power i got was unbelievable try from 100kg bench to 165kg!.
One of the obsessive-compulsive disorders some body builder types suffer from is called muscle dysmorphia, the opposite of very skinny people thinking they are too fat.
This is a mental disorder mostly effecting men that obsess about being too small, frail and undeveloped when they already have massive muscles. No matter how big they get they still feel inadequate. This often leads to a preoccupation with weight training, complusive eating to gain mass and frequent mirror gazing.
I am with everyone else who likes the old school bodybuilders. Just like everyone else I don't like how gargantuan the modern day bodybuilders like. Hey I respect the hard work they do and all don't get me wrong, I just like the Old School look : )
Bodybuilding...the king of any sport...;)
A different world. Bodybuilding is simple lifestyle. Do not complain ;-) It does not really belong to the meanest things in the world. Those who see things differently, not known to the world.
i really feel arnie and franco looked far more beautiful than todays bodybuilders...and would have won the competition against todays bodybuilders due to sheer beauty of the proportions of their build
How do they get rid of the from the chest!
Franco deadlifting around 700??
can someone tell me whats changed? and what are modern bodybuilders doing that the old ones didn't do? thanks
yes thank you for your response do you think like jay cutler and ronnie coleman does not take steroid i'm not mad but i'm just asking question
