    Pulling old magic out of the drawers is the feeling point that got me.

    I appreciate the review. I actually got this recently after I bought sticks directly from Eric Stevens where he does sell the color sticks you mention with the same sticker on both sides for passing out for examination. I bought the three-pack just to cover everything and to further support someone who has brought new life into this old trick. Highly recommend. This trick and the sticks he sells.

    I have never seen a "normal" version of a FanTaStik, but I have seen dummies of Hotrod. When I worked in a magic shop I always demonstrated paddle tricks with a FanTaStik because the colors were bigger and visible. But ultimately, we sold more Hotrods because there were so many accessories - rods with the same color on both sides, rods with multicolors on both sides, dice that looked like the hot rod, etc.
    I also encourage purchasing a booklet as well that taught tons of moves with the Hotrod/FanTaStik beyond just the paddle move. It was one of those stapled together booklets that taught X number of tricks with a hotrod. One of the best parts is that it taught how to make a pull to vanish the hotrod in a cloud of confetti. I did that once and the shop owner encouraged me to never do it again.

    It’s brilliant to see how Eric has breathed new life into this prop. This is a very creative routine and love seeing people come up with ideas using classic items most of us own

    I've always loved this trick. I prefer the gem version myself with the clear rod. Years ago I made my own inspection rod as you suggested. I would just do the trick as per normal and hand the inspection rod out AFTER the performance, not before. As with anything, they don't know what you're about to do, until you do it. Giving the rod before routine suggests that something is going to change, and that might have them watching you a bit closer. The paddle move on its own, when done correctly is pretty convincing and thus there's no need to give it out before IMHO.

    Thanks for the review! Ive always carried a hot rod pen with me, kids and adults love it and then I vanish it at the end. Its an under appreciated prop and effect.

    Best hot rod i ever owned is the Amazing Jumping Arrow by Mark K Young. Its simple. An arrow appears at the bottom of a blank rod. The arrow jumps to the middle, and then to the top.! Yes its in 3 different places on a hot rod! The 3 phases on what is perceived as a 2 sided paddle, puts you psychologically ahead. Its simple and amazing.

    “I'm gonna argue every single prop we have has the potential to blow people away and to be relevant if we would just take the time to unlock its potential” I love that. Love the review too, and because of your review, I bought the download, and it is amazing.

    I absolutely love this product, I've always really enjoyed the paddle move so knew I'd either love or hate it, but I enjoyed it so much I even reached out to Eric about it, and he's a super nice guy too.

    To add to your "adding new life to an old trick" watch Pen & Tellers version of the Ball and Vase Routine. They make a trick that is included in EVERY magic trick set look like a miracle. Additionally, their patter about Zombies is classic. You get better with every review David, Thank you.

    I have a hot rod, but without colors. It uses arrows on the ends and in the middle. They move and point in different directions as I manipulate the rod.
    I see a post below, it is called jumping arrow.

    I picked up a couple of magic lots on eBay about 2 years ago, most of it was junk but a few gems, one of which was an old color stick just like the one Eric uses, this made me dig it out. For some reason, I cant quite get the standard paddle move right with it, it feels too slippery or to thick or something. Ill have to pick this up and order from him to see if there is any difference. Thanks for the review!

    Eric Stevens actually sells both a normal stick and the "dummy" stick as you call it. He is definitely a genius. I would say this is the FIRST time there has been PROFESSIONAL level magic with a Hot Rod.
    great review as always! I was super excited for this to come out and was not disappointed. Totally worth it and he has the Hot Rods on his site in various styles perfect for you

    Nice Review. Could you use Eric Leclerc's Baffling Blocks to perform the routine shown on the download?

    • @magicorthodoxy
      @magicorthodoxy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sounds like a good question for Eric Stevens. Baffling Blocks is more of a paddle (and it's weighted)

    • @martinscircusskillsworkshops
      @martinscircusskillsworkshops 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@magicorthodoxy The weight might make the vanishes a bit more tricky *if my assumption of where the stick goes is correct*. I feel an art & crafts moment approaching with Lollipop sticks, coloured tape/stickers & double sized tape:)

      I can't believe I missed this comment, and I read all of them. Trying to do the vanishes with Baffling Blocks is probably not impossible, but would definitely be more difficult.

    Great review. Remember, you are the magic, not the props you use. Two people can both do the exact same effect. When you watch one it may just be a boring effect. When you watch the other it can be the best thing that you have seen in a long time. Because? The performer. The performer is the magic. The same with reviews. Which is why I love your reviews. Not Magic Dave, Magical Dave. Take care.
