Glad to hear you and your family are doing okay! I'm actually a wildland firefighter on the East Coast. Our agency normally sends folks to help out on big fires like the ones in California, but we're actually tied up kicking off our own fire season right now (ours runs winter through early spring, when humidity is lowest). I highly recommend having an evacuation plan ready in case you ever find yourselves in that situation. If you live in a more remote suburb or in the wildland-urban interface, you should also look up tips such as sprinkler systems and defensible space that can help firefighters with structure protection duties have a better shot at saving your home from falling embers, which is the primary reason houses catch fire, and not from the flame front itself. Stay safe, and do not fret this Friday!
Sweet song! No fretting without a fretless on Fretless Friday! I am really glad to hear that you, your family, and the chickens are good. Stay safe! 🪕🐓🪕🐓
I have that same guitar and love it. I play folk music with it and I love the tone. Since you are using the 6th string for a drone, you may want to try using a lighter guage string and tuning it up an octave. The 3rd string is your G so you could try one of those. Your local music store would have some loose strings laying around. Make sure you stay with nylon and don't use steel. You keep getting better and better. So proud of you. Please stay safe out there sweet girl
Lovely song, very hopeful :) I'm always happy to see you dip your toes in the guitar pool. You are finding your way around the fretboard incredibly well already :)
That sounded good Phoebe. I think that's the first time I've heard that tune. The new guitar looks good and sounds good. I'm glad y'all are ok. Have a great weekend!
I would never guessed you live in Los Angeles. I just started watching you. It's been maybe a month. Anyway your videos are very uplifting for me. Your are a very good player. You are very dedicated to your craft. I always look forward to your videos.
Even if there are frets, that's one of my super fave tunes, so nice and twisty. I've been trying to learn it on concertina (not my main instrument: I got one a year ago!: I'm a bowed string player, but anglo concertina is such a mind-twisting great instrument!).
I'm very glad to hear y'all are safe, and I hope that remains the case. The guitar sounds good, like an upright bass. It was like a duo playing, sort of. Any US seed company website that has a few varieties of gourd seeds will be a reliable source. But try to see a photo of the gourd with something for scale. I've seen people call a small long necked gourd a bottle gourd, but its not the size bottle gourd that you want for a banjo. I look forward to maybe hearing some dulcimer music in the future!
Awesome! Stay safe It's always good to see/hear from you no matter what you choose to do . Nice guitar, try ignoring the low E string tune the low A string down to G and you half 5 strings to play claw hammer. Leave the 6th string just don't play it. most will not notice. Frail on.
Love the guitar Phoebe. And your exp Trying to clawhammer guitar . You're already doing great. Keep it up. And like another said "that pic of you with your chin 9n the guitar would make a nice album cover.
Nice guitar! I wonder who is the good friend who sent it to you. (Heh heh) Take it to your local luthier/music store to fix the buzzing with the low string. Classical guitars are best played softly and tenderly, but good at any speed. If you want more volume, just plug it into your amp and crank it up to 11. 🙂
Great job on the classical guitar. I’m glad you’re away from the fires I was worried about that. We’re praying for you and your family that the fires stay away. Stay safe and keep up the good work, I love your music.
Well, that was really quite pleasant. I like the tonal quality. Yeah slapping a guitar for that hard freeze that’s a really interesting dimension, thanks the music was pretty cool. Hey sorry to hear about the cat. And his old man from Florida I gotta tell you. Have the car packed for a couple of days in advance of something that may never happen is always a wise move especially for the stuff that you care about the most. Just a heads up. You can always unpack it later.
I like the sound of “clawhammer guitar!” I also like the fact you and your family are safe and I hope you stay that way. God bless you. Hope to see you again soon when things are better and safer for everyone. Drink water!
A lovely tune played on a lovely instrument (granted, since I’ve been playing guitar for more than 30 years I may be a little biased) 😉 Keeping you and all of the people affected by the fires in my thoughts.
Dr. Phoebe, I love this tune on the gut string guitar. It sounds like mellow music for a country drive. I want to call the song "Big Sciatica," but then we would need a banjo Chiropractor! Keep safe, Doc, we will be praying for everyone in the area of these fires. Much love and God's blessings to you! ❤❤❤❤❤❤ I needed to add a sixth heart for the extra string!
Well done, Phoebe!! You might want to try High Tension nylon strings on the guitar. That might help eliminate the buzz, especially if you tune it down at all. So glad you are safe in your part of the planet!!
Glad to hear you are safe. Many guitars when they come from the factory are not set up very well. Usually for about 60 bucks you can take it to someplace like guitar Center and they will do a basic set up and make sure all of your strings And fret are aligned so that you don’t get buzz so that the action is not too difficult on your hands. Hope I’m explaining that well.
If you look at the low E string I noticed where the string winds it is installed wrong. The strings should wind to the inside like the other ones. Don’t know if that would help the buzzing but worth trying.
The buzzing is caused by the way the string is plucked. In clawhammer banjo, there is a distinct vertical component to the plucking of the drone string, whereas guitars are designed to be picked horizontally (parallel to the finger board).
Check out Tommy Emmanuel. He's one of Chet Atkin's officially-designated Certified Guitar Pickers. Plays the bass line and melody at the same time. He also taps and bangs on the body of his guitars to the point of creating patina spots, so there's percussion, too. (Not suggesting you should follow that style - he's just amazing.)
Glad You’re safe. Be careful about the air quality. Wear a mask if it goes over 80. I frail the banjo, but three-finger pick the guitar. Not sure how that happened. Occasionally, I’ll tree-finger pick the banjo, and frail the guitar, but not often. Rarely flat-pick anything. Bass, sort of a modified frail. 🤷🏻♀️ It’s always good to try new things. You’re doing great! Love, Peace, and Banjo! ❤🪕❤
You can change that low string out for a string that works for you. Try a smaller gauge string (lower number)... look up "guitar string tension calculator" to figure out what gauge string you need for the desired open pitch. Your style of playing relies on a drone string there, so why not switch it out for something that doesn't buzz. If you don't want to try it with that guitar, try it first with that other guitar you had once, I seem to remember you had a more ratty guitar. But I think a high string in that position would be brilliant. You would get the rich sound of that guitar with a banjo flavor. It would be unique, I don't think I've ever seen anyone do it. But there's no reason not to. Could be your thing. And I think it would sound incredible. BTW, you can upload as often as you want. TH-camrs burn out when they feel like they "have to" upload. If it's once a week, we'll be here for you. If it's once a MONTH, we'll be here for you. It's not like our lives revolve around you, and your life shouldn't revolve around us. This is just supposed to be fun for everyone, remember.
It sounds really good, it is likely all nylon strings, just the bass strings have the nylon inside them. I believe metal strings are pure metal on the outside and inside of the string.
Nooo... what you need is a fireproof underground banjo and a chicken safe! (:-0 Besides, doesn't the bible tell us 'only take one set of sandals and one banjo?' Some day the US will re-learn good forestry and water management like we had in the 50s and 60s. The fires are totally preventable. Canada has the same problem because they listened to all the 'environmental experts'. Love that song. Amazed at how multi-instrumental you are becoming.
Classical or flamenco guitar! Flamenco because of the cutaway. That low E string sounds a bit buzzy, though I've never tried clawhammer technique on one of these!
Group conscience decided to expand the Friday group to other instruments so that we have more time for other things throughout the weeks and months and also don’t quickly run out of new tunes to exposit together :-)👍✌️
Daddario makes classical guitar wound bass single strings in a multitude of gauges -- As a classical guitarist that likes dropped tunings going up a little on the string diameter to raise the tension some can really help the buzzing. (Also might be an issue of the nut slot being too deep if it doesn't buzz as much when fretted.) I use lots of customized string gauges to fit the tuning I'm using. Their String Tension Pro online calculator can really help you dial in what you need.
@@michaelsommers2356 , of course. I was thinking of the fire implications of broader environmental effects of lining the channels of flowing bodies of water with concrete. The Los Angeles River is in concrete, as is a creek near Phoebe's house. How does this affect evaporation? How does it affect the wetness of the soil (and thereby the wetness of the plants that grow in the soil)? Does it have other environmental effects that increase or decrease the risks associated with fire? I don't know the answers to these questions, but I wonder about them. ("@smadaf Fires can jump fire breaks, especially if there is a wind in the right direction.")
Nice! I've had a couple of Guitars that I just didn't like how they played. I have an old Checkmate Guitar that came with Nylon, and I think it has Steel Strings, now. Still not completely happy with its' sound.

Gourds, gardening, guitar -- you are playing in the key of G today. Song sounded great.
Good stuff, pretty smooth transition to six strings.

Hold off for a week on digging that bed for gourds. There's something useful on the way shortly.
Also, that is a sweet guitar!

I never knew one could play guitar using the clawhammer technique! Really cool. I must try. Thanks for the vid. Stay safe
That's right folks, more pickn' and grin'n with sweet Phoebe and the chickens! Wonderful music, Phoebe!😁👍
Thats really cool how you are playing guitar using the banjo techniques, the clawhammer on guitar :-)

This is a nice change I would love to see more of this on Friday or whenever really haha.
Thanks for the fretless Friday ❤
Mighty fine.
Nice jam session with some chickens. Thank you for sharing. 👩🌾🐔🐓 🎸
😁👍
Glad you're safe, that's the main thing. The guitar sounds nice, and I was wondering if you're planning to grow your own banjo?
I absolutely LOVE this. Clawhammer in a classical!! Phoebe you are so unique and talented. please never stop posting

What a success , I wish you a happy new year 2025 and a long life under the sun.

What part of LA are you in? My wife and I love your videos and we’re down in Costa Mesa. Thanks for your videos!

Rly like the sound of the chickens lightly clucking near the mic. It adds a unique touch.
I used to take my dog for a walk past a house that had a chicken coop in the back yard … listening to the hens clucking always put me in a good space
Awesome ❤
LOVE the show Thanks from FL.
That is possibly a flamenco guitar in which case it is meant to buzz for the percussive sound of flamenco.
We love you girl, hope you hit 1M.

stay safe ^.^
Don’t be afraid to replace your low G string with a first string, or even remove it and try banjo tunings on the rest, especially open G.
this what I see you becoming

Claw hammer gutar sounds good. Don't get burned.

As it is Fretless Friday, I thought I'd see you take a pair of pliers and remove all the frets from that guitar! 😅
There are frets! On a Friday!?
I completely understand, though. We are all fretting about LA.

Check to see about cross pollination of gourds... Try your local nursery or seed store. They know your area.
What can burn? Houses. Cars. Vegetation. Animals. People. Lots of stuff.
I wonder whether the fact that the creek is lined with concrete makes it better or worse for the risk of wildfires.

Hadn't thought of that. That would indeed be a great cover. Hint hint
Grow girl!!!
Gourds will cross pollinate. Usually have to grow one type at a time.
I was going to ask if the guitar is tuned standard, if not what. But I _love_ our garden and am trying to talk The Mrs about adding gourds!
Not a tune that I like but I like your version! 👍
