  • Replacement of failed volume control IC in Altec Lansing ACS45.2 speakers. Replace the defective 16-pin volume control IC chip labeled PT2256. It's a bad Chinese-made imitation of the original Toshiba TC9235P.

    Bought my Altecs in 2000. They finally went kaput this year. Until I found your video. Ordered the Toshiba chip and they're alive again.
    Just wanted to say thank you for sharing this. Not many people take the time anymore to diagnose electronics.
    Great job

    Wow, thank you, i did this repair last night, and now the 15+ years old ACS45.2 working great. Both PT2256 and Toshiba TC9235P sold at the same price here in mainland china, arround 0.4 bucks each, the shipping cost me 1.6 bucks (china mainland).

    I did this repair yesterday and now they are working great. Bought the chip on eBay for 4 bucks delivered. The hard part was getting the old chip out. I used desoldering braid and it worked fine, just tedious. Thanks!!

      +beckes1 Awesome! Another system saved from the landfill!
      A quick little tip for anyone having a hard time removing old solder. Before desoldering it's a good practice to add a little fresh solder to the joints. This helps melt the crappy lead free solder they use at the factory.

    The only issues I've had with Older Altec systems is the capacitors bulge and you get the nasty hum, easily fixed for a buck or two and now I actually make money refurbishing these old speaker systems. They still are hands down the best sounding PC speaker systems within a fair budget. The ACS 250 sub paired with Acs 40's or 400's were the best bang for the buck versions.

    You couldnt have been more correct sir! Thats EXACTLY what the case was with Altec. My father worked there when they made these and it was engineers vs bean counters constantly! Countless customers were given replacement systems due to this kind of tom foolery. You really cant find good PC speakers on offer today, aside from the Klipsch pro-media, and even they are of a 20 year old design now.

    Just hooked up an old set in my garage. They were working fine and when I moved them up on the shelf that I built they quit working. I took them apart, checked the fuse and the voltage out of the transformer...all ok...after I put them back together everything worked fine!

    Help please! My Altec Lansing ACS 45.2 Multimedia Speaker System w/ Sub. & Power Supply stopped working July 4th 2023 after lightning struck the house...maybe it's just a coincidence and it was the unit's time to die, but I did have perfect sound and operation just before it happened - after it happened, very low sound, unable to power off or on and can not adjust volume. Luckily my 13 year old Frankenstein PC did not also get fried. This unit has sentimental value to me, it was originally my deceased brother's, so I am not wanting to toss it out and say goodbye to another piece of him...I want to get it fixed please and I know full well I won't be able to do the repairs myself any longer. Where would I even attempt to get this repaired?

    How did you get the subwoofer/amp case apart? I got all 8 screws out but the damn thing still refuses to be pried apart with a spudger. I don't see any additional screws. What am I missing here? Is there more screws hidden away? Some kind of plastic clips intergrated into the case?

    I have some ACS45 desktop speakers and the volume UP button went out. Im assuming that i might just need to use some contact cleaner maybe? Mine dont seem to be able to be taken apart as easily as the higher acs models though

      i just took my speaker apart to look at the volume control (having the same problem with UP). i disconnected the cable from UP and swapped it over to the DOWN switch to see if that would work ... no luck yet though. next step is.... open the sub? i dont know. im so sad i ever touched the down button because it was at the perfect volume :(

    I have an Altec Lansing ACS340. The sub woofer has power (no sound), but the power switch on the right speaker won't turn on won't turn on. Would this also be due to the faulty sound chip or a bad switch?

    I have this same model of speakers (ACS45.2), the other day they stopped working completely... I hear a buzzing from the subwoofer, but the LED between the volume buttons will not come on... Is this enough information to determine what is the problem? I do own solder and gun, I will have a go at fixing it if I know what is the problem. Thank you if you can help!

    • @BeachTechPC
      @BeachTechPC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I had to guess it would be the volume control IC has gone bad. It could also very well be that a capacitor has failed which can cause that buzzing. Open up the sub woofer and have a look at the board.

    What was the issue with your Altec Lansing? Why did you replace the control chip? Mine is making some loud noise

    • @BeachTechPC
      @BeachTechPC  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      buzzmeok It started with with the audio being distorted. Then later they lost all volume control and then power. The PT2256 IC in these speakers controls the power on/off and volume. A link to the data sheet if you'd like see how the chip works. www.datasheets.pl/integrated_circuits/T/TC/TC9235F.pdf

    What is the easiest way to disconnect the sub at the Molex connector? I wound up unsoldering the jack, which defeats the purpose of the jack. I found it was easy to use a Panavise on the board once the sub was not connected.

    • @BeachTechPC
      @BeachTechPC  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been a few years but I don't remember disconnecting either the sub or transformer wiring when I did this IC replacement.

    • @bobwalther5440
      @bobwalther5440 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disconnecting the sub made it easier to get the board into a Panavise to hold it steady. The 4011 was also part of the problem, since it wasn't always telling the 4013 to flip, due to cold solder near the DIN connector. Once I got that soldered the power LED flips on and off with the two buttons, like it's suppossed to. Waiting on the Toshiba Chip from China to finish the job. I also socketed the 4011 and the PT2256 replacement. It's nice having free time when you're retired.

    • @BeachTechPC

      Distortion could be from many things including the volume control IC. Could also be bad caps or a bad audio amplifier IC.

    Hi. I have an Altec ACS45 and can't switch off by pressing the two volume control buttons however my board looks pretty different and I have two audio inputs. The volume controls themselves work. I have the Toshiba chip you mention but at U1 but none of the PT2256's. Could it be the TA8248K chip that's failed? (it's screwed to the heat sink). I also have two KIA324P chips. Your help would be appreciated as I don't want to send it for recycling!...perhaps it's the Toshiba chip itself?...

    • @BeachTechPC
      @BeachTechPC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The TA8248k chip is the audio amplifier IC. If that was bad you'd have no sound. I could be wrong but those KIA324P chips look to be op amps. If you have the same Toshiba chip I talk about on your board then that IC has failed or is starting to. The Toshiba chip controls the on/off function and the volume, it's very rare that they fail unlike the PT2256. You have the older version of the ACS45 with the small plastic sub woofer box it appears.

    • @nicholassnead1241
      @nicholassnead1241 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I was guessing that. Have already ordered the replacement Toshiba chip on Ebay so will see if that sorts it. The board is very different to yours it seems, on mine there's a single bridge rectifier component (KBU608) where as it looks like you have a bank of individual diodes performing the rectification.
      Thanks a lot!

    • @nicholassnead1241
      @nicholassnead1241 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hello again. Replaced the Toshiba TC9235P chip and it's made absolutely no difference - the volume control still works but I cannot turn the unit on and off by pressing the volume controls down together. Worth a shot anyway!

    • @BeachTechPC
      @BeachTechPC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry that didn't fix it for you. Altec must have used a different way of switching on that model.

    • @nicholassnead1241
      @nicholassnead1241 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No worries, as i said it was worth a go and didn't cost a lot. Also tried taking out the transistors and testing with a DMM on the diode setting. No obvious dry solder joints, blown caps or resistors. Still works, just have to plug/unplug when I want to use it.
