      Thanks! Great to here. They are right at the cusp of cars still being fairly easy to work on at home so will make a great classic in the future. She turned a lot of heads when I did 500 miles in her on holiday as the 850s have become quite a rare car. I didn't see another one on the road, but did see two MkI V70s that share the same body styling.

      I'm glad it was helpful. The PCV system is one of the Achilles heels of the 850 - far too inaccessible, and I am told is the downfall of more than one 850 as they get neglected and block and start blowing the main oil seals by pressurising the block. On a high mileage car that usually spells being scrapped.

    I've got a 2.5L 10 Valve been on the road since new with 255000km on it, only one around i know of. Theres a fairly tight cluster of volvos around here (South Shore Nova Scotia) on account of a certified Volvo mechanic having his own shop nearby, but the majority are 240's or V70 Turbos. Im suspecting mine of needing this done and I'll be doing the glove test shortly, glad to see this video as i assumed from all the others that all the NA versions PCV systems were the same. Good to know there are differences to look out for. Nice job!

      There are a surprising number of variations to engine and fuel ignitions on the 850. I get the impression that in the US and Canada the 20 valve turbo versions were far more popular as that seems to be the versions that get talked about, but the 10 valve non turbo is quite different as the PCV layout is slightly different and the fuel ignition is completely different if it has the Siemens Fenix system rather than the more common Bosch.

      I forgot to mention, the PCV system on the 10 valve model does not have the head breather pipe. That's the main difference when you look at some of the other how-to videos on TH-cam which from what I have found have all been for the 20 valve versions. It's fortuitous as the pipe that fits to the head on the 20 valve version costs a bit and needs careful fitting, so it's good to not have it.

    Total respect, this is a pig of a job on some of those bolts, i'm presently right in the middle of this job, trying to find out more info on the DVI valve... Having just an 850 without turbo, struggling to find info, it's missing its vacuum line and the linkage was completely seized. Like you, most of the reference material is for the 2.3 turbo and particularly the US variants with much more emissions gubbins. Edit: Turns out it's not DVI but VVIS (google it!). I had no idea mine hadn't been working for years, just put the loss of low down power down to it ageing.

    Interesting! I never knew these came in a 10 valve version; I have an NA 20 valve that needs this done so I was looking it up and came across this. I'd say you have quite a rare car there, very much worth saving. If I had the money I'd see about importing one here to Colorado for the sake of novelty

      It seems to be the way that the middle of the range cars don't survive in such big numbers because they were considered unsexy workhorses and used and thrown away. The high end cars get saved because racerboys loved them and the low end cars seem to have been bought by grandpas who do a couple of thousand miles a year to the shops and back and they live forever.

      Thanks! I can well imagine. It was a pain to realise it just as I finished putting it all together, but best that I did remember, unlike my Father with that Rover P4 all those years ago.

    Hi Jenny ,well done ,just remember regular oil and filter changes .

    • @JenniferEKirk
      @JenniferEKirk  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles. When she is running regularly I do a change at least every 6 months too. However as it is only being run up once a month until warm, I have left the service interval for over 18 months now. I did however do an oil flush, change and filter change when she was first taken off the road. The oil is still clean on the dipstick.

    Hi .I have a 1994 10 valve non turbo 850 with 105,000 miles on it .I did the glove test and it inflated a bit and a bit of white smoke comes out of the dipstick when pulled up .should I replace the whole system now? Or just keep my eye on it. I use the car every day and it's great but this pcv system thing concerns me.... thanks and best wishes from one of the few cars like this left in the u.k.

      Paul Crowley that sounds like the PCV does need changing. The risk as it gets worse is that things like rear main oil seals could start leaking because if the pressure build up.

    I need some help with mine... I replaced the PCV system and now I've got some sort of vacuum leak (I'm assuming). The engine cranks for a while before starting, and when it finally does, there is a loud hissing noise coming from the engine. I've narrowed it down to the tube running from the flame trap to the intake "tree" (above the throttle body). The intake is pulling hard on that tube and I have no idea why. Could you help me out please? I'm just a kid tryna fix his car and I would really really appreciate it, thanks

    I know I'm very late, but you don't happen to have the art numbers of the parts that you ordered? I've the same engine and i can't seem to find a kit anywhere, have to order it piece by piece.

    • @JenniferEKirk
      @JenniferEKirk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I don't. At the time I hunted around a fair amount and ended up being recommended a main dealer in Swansea who seemed to have ended up with the last of the stock. They sold them as a kit of everything you needed to do the PCV system, but were short even then of a few parts so I had to recondition some of the old bits. The most important part is the oil separator - no way of cleaning out the old one. If the other parts aren't physically damaged then you can carefully clean them.

    matthewsvolvosite.com has lots of good information if you're still at it. The PCV system was one of the first "major" things I did to my Volvo...probably getting time to do it again. :-O
