    I traded for the Brougham in 2012. Does look beautiful, but battery was dead, NO gauges was working, seats did not work, wrong wheels, wiring was all wrong, air did not work, trunk did not work, car was not what it was advertised. Not the right vanities. Got most of it fixed for about another 35 K . Love the Brougham and glad to have it, Dave

    What an absolutely stunning car. I could spend the better part of an afternoon just sitting and looking at all the design elements from different angles.
    As it was intended to be, it is a testament to what skilled American craftsmen and American technology could accomplish when the beancounters were left out of the equation.

    Has Jay Leno seen this ?
    He has one similar. I'm not sure of the year though. I think it's this one. Same gorgeous color.
    Just a couple months ago when Jay was burned/injured, he returned to the hospital to gift the staff with doughnuts in appreciation for their excellent care. On his way home he stopped at a gas station and. he put gas into his awesome dark blue whatever year Cadillac and off he went, leaving me gasping and constantly in search for the car.
    I'm tellin' ya', if Leno sees this he'll go nuts.
    Thank you so much for sharing this. It was fantastic.

    These Cadillac,s were indeed the finest cars ever built with features even modern cars don,t have. At the time they were far superior to a Rolls Royce. During the mid 1960,s the brand started declining due to quality & reliability issues that still currently are an issue. I think the early Lincoln’s were a far superior car with a style that was elegant, yet understated. 1958 was indeed the finest hour for Cadillac.

    this is a '57,the last year for single headlamps, from '58 on, all new cars had to be equipped with double headlamps by law...Rare, expensive and complicated maintenance, nice one!

    • @brianray8241
      @brianray8241 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This car is a '58. The 57 Brougham was the first US car w quad headlamps.

    • @dlwatib
      @dlwatib 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're wrong about the law. Singles versus duals were never regulated by law. I don't know why you would think that because for many years GM used it as a differentiator for its different price levels. Cheap brands like Chevrolet got singles while pricier brands like GMC and Cadillac had duals. 1958 was the first year for duals. 1957 Cadillacs had singles. Take another look at 0:11, this car has duals, it's a 1958.

    I think it's funny that the exhaust doesn't actually route out through the exhaust ports in the bumper. I don't know if that is correct or not. I do know that other Cadillacs of that era had functioning bumper exhaust ports.

    The air suspension is gone. At 9:51 when he points the camera up under the left front side of the car, a coil spring can be seen.

    • @workonitm8
      @workonitm8 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think there were problems and GM replaced most of the air suspensions.

    • @dlwatib
      @dlwatib 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There were problems, but I don't know that it was GM who did the dirty deed of replacing them with springs. I'm pretty sure that under warranty GM would have fixed the leaks and sent them on their way. But they did not have a long warranty period in those days. Once out of warranty, owners would be faced with lack of parts for such a rare car, and lack of expertise for how the system worked at their local shock & muffler shop. The recommendation would inevitably be to replace the entire system with coil springs and normal shocks. If instead they got a repair estimate from a dealer, it would have been for an exorbitant amount that made complete replacement the more economical option.

    Was just gonna say Stig these aren't the correct wheels. I mean the car is fabulous and his presentation is great. However no car in 1957 had AM FM radio because FM didnt exist. Minor fuss with that, lol. But he also left out a few things such as first car with memory seats. It had an electric closer on the trunk. Air ride and auto leveling. All kinds of bells and whistles cars just didn't have then. Overall this is a great car and he did a great job selling it. Very well done for a young man

    • @dlwatib
      @dlwatib 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The radio in this car is period-correct, but it's only a signal seeking AM radio. FM did exist throughout the 1950s and was increasing in popularity. There were still about 3 times as many AM stations as FM stations, but FM did exist and was available in the larger cities. Cadillac brochures first mention an AM/FM radio option in 1963.

      59 is a cheaper car. Strange maybe but it was cheaper to transport a ordinary 59 to Italy and "brougham" it there and then transport it back to US than handbuild them like they did with the 57-58 at the Fleetwood factory.

    IF there was a more beautiful/luxurious car ever made, I'm not aware of it. This one isn't 100% but still a fantastic restoration. I'd like to see the before pic's also. !957/58 were top shelf, quality began to go down from 1959 on.
    I think the number manufactured of the 57/58 style was around 400.

    • @dlwatib
      @dlwatib 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quality actually went up in the 1960s. It wasn't until the EPA regulations hit in the 1970s that quality started to suffer. I particularly like the styling of the 1964 and the 1966 Cadillacs. 1964 was the last year of the true tailfins. It was small but elegant and sat atop a very elegant vertical taillight. The 1966 Cadillac led the way forward to a new, more modern look. The tailfins were eliminated in favor of beveled fender peaks and vertical taillights. It was an even more elegant refinement of the 1965 when most of the change was made. In 1967 & '68 they reverted to flirting with pseudo-tailfins. An OK look, but not nearly as elegant as the 1966.

      One problem with original hubcaps, they tend to fly off when on the highway, either at higher speed or when going over a bump, confounding problem if they're hard to replace, which these probably are. Wire wheels are a good option to maintain a decent (although not factory correct) look, and drive the car without worry.

    • @dlwatib
      @dlwatib 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The original wheelcovers (not hubcaps) did not have a problem of flying off on the highway unless they were incorrectly seated on the wheel. The installer *must* inspect to make sure that the wheelcover is fully seated on the wheel with absolutely no gap anywhere on the rim. Use a rubber hammer thoroughly.

    GM sold these back in the day for 25000.00, in 1958 an astronomical price for a car but I understand GM lost money on every sale. I recall that Jack Wrather of oil, radio, TV, hotels, Movies etc. owned a black with stainless model. He owned the rights to The Lone Ranger, Sargent Preston Of The Yukon, and Lassie. He built the Hotel at Disneyland when Walt ran out of Money building and developing his first amusement park. Disney offered to buy it two years later but Jack knew a good money maker and would not sell. They were still best friends for life.

    This car is missing the Sabre Wheels. See spare tire wheel. The poor fit of the trunk lid drives me nuts.

    GM lost 10k on each Eldo Brougham, similar to Ford and the Continental MKII, magnificent cars, both virtually handbuilt, fully balanced engines

    I'm a bit surprised, because I'm pretty sure both MY of this generation had dual-quad carb, and not tri-power like this one (or so says the video).

    I think that's the handle to open the door.

    This is a incredible vehicle that I have had the privilege in assisting the new owner in bringing into OEM compliance. This 58 just recieved the 1st place National award. The car is now 100% in all it functions, from Air Ride to auto trunk. You can see some of out work here:

    You can easily spend over $100,000 on fixing one of these up. Nothing is common to other Cadillacs. The gauges are peculiar to this model and are very difficult to get to work properly. You have to have a mechanic who has worked on one to be able to fix its many problems. They didn’t work well when new.
