Just went to anchorage for Alaska and I love it. I told my wife that I want to move to anchorage and she’s coming along with the idea. Going from So Cal to Alaska I know is a huge change but I’m setting a goal for my family to move up there within 2 years

My wife and I never planned on going to Whittier but we missed our turn a couple of minutes before we got there to go to some glacier. But we went anyway and Whittier was unbelievable. Never been to Alaska but grew up with my dad saying that that was his dream however he is now 82 and still hasn’t been able to go. My son never heard my dad say he wanted to visit Alaska as he was growing up because he barely saw my dad but my son Nick has been asking to visit Alaska since he was 10. He is now 20 and I have yet taken him. I did tell him that it would be a gift and promised to take him because I too would love to visit. We were born and raised in Florida however lived in Chicago a while and we love the cold weather. Can’t stand the Florida weather. I was hoping to get hired in Alaska and just move but boy is it difficult to find a job there. Thanks for your videos. Awesome.
I'm in the same boat with my husband. He's lived in alaska his whole life, born and raised, where as I didn't move to Alaska until the military took my dad there when I was 14. Now i'm 23 and living in Texas with my husband (where all my extended family are). We moved because I had severe depression during the winter time and it was something not even meds could help. He respected why we had to move even though he never understood it because the darkness during winter time is his everyday normalcy.
I lived in Alaska from 1967 to 1975, pretty quiet place,if you love the bussle and Hussle of the urban,city life,you will go into culture shock if you move to Alaska,if you like fishing and hunting g and being on your own,Alaska may be the place to be

One other comment--I love this video. The stuff about the isolation, about never wanting to go to bed during the daylight in the summer, and the isolation, all rings true with my experience growing up there. I really miss it.
I love the fact that you are Disney enthusiasts, you also add the Alaskan aspect to you’re content. I’m sure you know me a smidge, I live in NW WASHINGTON STATE up at the Canadian boarder. So as the crow flies, I’m closer to you then most of the lower forty-eight. I feel a little kinship with you “don’t burst my bubble” as far as when it gets dark in winter. At around 3:00pm in the dead of winter here, the sun starts to fade. I know it’s not where you live, but at that time of day it’s time to stoke up the wood stove and get dinner in my skillet and pots onto the wood stove. Thanks for the video 🦋💜

I love Alaska, it’s so beautiful. I was there in 2016 and really want to go back. I want to drive the Alaskan highway from Canada 🇨🇦 to Anchorage one day. I know it’s an enormous undertaking but I feel it’s the best way to really experience the true beauty of the country. I live in Australia 🇦🇺 and it’s beautiful here but it’s a hotter drier beauty. Alaska is the cool green and white beauty. The mountains and the glaciers and unique wildlife just seems like the opposite of us.
I googled "what is it like living in Alaska?" and this video came up, i have to say it was so informative, very too the point. Husband will be taking a job soon in Anchorage & i thought oh no its going to be dark and cold every day.. But now i am eager and i see the background in this video and all the valid points you both have made... i am very exciting now.

Wow. I am from NY, I think if I want to move somewhere else, Alaska is my top place to move to. When I was younger, I thought Alaska is very cold and dark, which is true but in the winter time. I like nature and Alaska would fit me. How are the health care and school systems up there? Thanks for sharing, learn something new everyday
Health care: for lots of things people fly out to Seattle for treatment. With only 300,000 people in Anchorage you can't have all the specialists you'd have in a larger city. I graduated from East High in 1974, so my information on schools is way out of date, but at that time we had an unusual number of PhDs teaching at the high school level. Various reasons, but some came up as military and stayed. There was an Anchorage Community College. (My dad ran the welding school there). It was a bargain, but it's gone now. I went to college in PA and then left Alaska, so can't give further info.
I am getting ready to sail up the Inside passage this summer then across the gulf to Seward, moving there full time! Thanks for the info. I grew up in Montana, I suspect Alaska is going to be just that much better!

I've heard nothing but good things about AK. Being from Texas, I totally get the stereotypes. AK does sound like somewhere I'd love to live. I enjoy the cold. The one thing my son has told me is there aren't any air conditioners; where he lives anyways. On base at JBER. So when it's warm, it's warm. My husband and I plan on visiting in late Jan, early Feb (for our son's promotion) so we're probly gonna get the full brunt of an AK winter. We tried to get up there over the summer but those tickets aren't cheap. Which is a drawback. Maybe next summer. Interesting to hear each of y'all's perspective.
Yeah, there are very few places in Alaska that have AC. It's not needed often, but when it's needed we sure wish we had it! Winter can certainly be cold, but it is also absolutely beautiful! If you need any recommendations on things to enjoy in Alaska in January/February let us know!
So, you live in Los Anchorage......... Ha! I lived in Juneau for 15 years and never would've left except there was a recession caused by the oil companies. The last year or so before I left the state I worked and lived in Anchorage. In the winter the city is the dirtiest I've ever seen. Hookers walking the streets and drugs wherever you looked. There was a saying......Anchorage isn't too bad a town and the best thing is it's real close to Alaska. But.........I still love Alaska and miss it greatly.
I loved the part about people asking if hotels in Alaska take U.S. currency. My sister and I once thought it would be fun to set up an exchange booth at the Anchorage airport to change US dollars in to "Alaska money." We didn't do it, of course! I miss Alaska, and am looking forward to coming back.

Wow ! Thank you for posting this video. I live in the Caribbean and, I've always been fascinated with Alaska. Every single video I've watched about Alaska, and there's no exception here, gives me the impression that Alaska is a big Family. Great video.
I think that's a great way to describe Alaska. That feels like it may be fading some in our more urban areas, but much of Alaska is still remote and it definitely has that feel.
Same here in Houston, man. Summer gets so hot and sticky and there's rarely a breeze so you're just walking around all sweaty and gross. Sweat is supposed to help cool you down, but here, it just makes it feel even hotter. Air conditioning is a Godsend, but conversely, the heating for winter is basically nonexistent and you have to be really careful because there have actually been instances of people turning on their heaters for the first time in years and having it catch fire because of all the dust and cobwebs clogging it up from disuse. We really only have two seasons here: Summer and Fall-ish. In summer, temperatures can remain consistently withing the 90's to mid-100's range for weeks on end and average humidity rarely dips below 70%. In Fall-ish, you might get snow one day out of the year if everyone happened to appease the right snow gods that year, but temperatures can fluctuate between 20 F and 90 F with very little rhyme or reason. It's been cold enough to potentially snow in November only to get shorts-and-t-shirt sweat-your-balls-off weather on Christmas day. And God forbid the temperature ever drop below 40 F, at least if you're planning on driving anywhere in the city and actually arriving at your destination sometime before the heat death of the universe. People in this city drive like a-holes on a good day. If the temperature drops low enough for the roads to start freezing, suddenly it's like the apocalypse came early this year and everyone's driving like they're in a Mad Max movie and getting in traffic-stopping accidents left and right. Personally, if you're gonna live in the state of Texas, San Antonio is a much better pick than Houston. There's a lot less humidity out there and driving is pretty chill as long as you avoid football stadiums during a game and university parking lots just in general. However, it's still too hot for my liking and Alaska's looking a lot more appealing, particularly Anchorage.
Ha! Well, what we meant is what once snow arrives, it never leaves. We've noticed that a lot of places will get snow and then it melts, and then they get more snow and it melts. That's kind of what winter looks like. For the most part, when snow arrives, it doesn't go anywhere until Spring.
Two Hearts One Roof summers in Anchorage can get into the mid 70's (F), and people are often surprised by that. I think the record high in Alaska is in the 90's (F)!
What’s it like driving there in winter in December. We’re gonna visit a few days then. And we’re from Texas. Gonna get a rental but don’t know much about snow driving. Maybe that could be a video idea.

My husband and I love animals and have dreamed of having huskies and taking them for walks out in the wilderness. We both love the cold and enjoy snow very much. We’ve been talking about moving here for a while now, and I was wondering if you tell me from your experience a little about the medical community and whats its like to be a patient there? Or what you have noticed about medical professionals? Just curious about where I may end up working one day lol !

Also, what department of housekeeping did you work in and how did you like it? I currently work as a housekeeper and DO NOT like working for this particular management staff. To be honest, I am trying to get out of the housekeeping industry because I don't want to do it for the next three to five years. I recieved both an associates degree in Bible and a bachelor's degree in communication studies from LCU.
I probably wouldn't get too big of a dog, but something like a Golden Retriever would be perfect for me! I actually wasn't in housekeeping, I was always on the sales & marketing side of hotel operations. I started at front desk, and worked my way up until I was a Regional Director over a portfolio of hotels around Alaska. I really loved the hotel industry. However, there is no doubt that the housekeeping staff are the hardest working people in the entire hotel industry!
Allen Thomas You’re welcome! I think how expensive Alaska is depends on where you are coming from. It’s certainly more expensive than other places, however it’s also less expensive than some.

Hi, thanks for the questions! Public schools here are probably similar to public schools elsewhere. We do occasionally have snow days, but those only occur if we get more than about 12 inches of snow at one time. Very rarely will they cancel school for less that a foot of snow. I know some places around the country will cancel school if they receive even the smallest amount of snow, but not here in AK! Our school here is not year round, it starts in late August and goes until late May.
There are certainly many areas where a 4X4 vehicle helps. In Anchorage, and other city areas they do a good job of keeping the roads plowed. However, a lot of more rural areas can require a 4X4. It really depends on where in Alaska you are.
hi I think last time I asked a question, I finally moved away from north Carolina where I was and gotten sick so bad from humidity hot air and stuffy air heat all of that and I am right now in flagstaff Arizona, for one month now, when I got here I started feeling better rapidly as air here was different and cooler with dry air of course but soon am planning to be in Alaska next stop at my age over 50 need to settle somewhere beautiful that is Alaska,,, in north Carolina I had hypertension went up bad and it caused my blood sugar to go up for no reason my A1C was normal but blood sugar hit 191 mg on blood sugar count shaking all over and dry mouth was indication, I left on july 27th arrived in Arizona on 30th now soon gonna drive my car all way up to Alaska yikes hope everything goes well for me

In this tourist accident I always told them . Look how much I get for american dollar. Since that I never said I am american again because you avoiding some problems . Things here are certainly more expensive. The cost of living is higher than other locations. However there are other factors to take into account. We have no state income tax, here in Anchorage we have no sales tax, and income here is higher than most places. So, when you take everything into account, it isn't as bad as it seems if you just look at the cost of groceries and other items.

Is there a lot of farmers markets with fresh produce or do you have to buy these from your grocery store? Are the prices pretty average or more expensive than other states? Thanks! Hi Amanda! The agriculture here is pretty interesting. Because of the long hours of sunlight here during the summer there is an extreme growing season. In fact, many world record size vegetables are grown here. Farmers markets typically run from May - September with the best months being August & September at the markets. The prices for fresh produce here is pretty great at the markets during the summer, but the rest of the year it's expensive at the super market. There are some farm subscriptions such as Full Circle Farms that ships fresh produce boxes here every week from farms in Washington. They are a little expensive, but you do get fresh produce year round that way.
crime in Anchorage is at an all time high! robberies, murders, rapes, theft...you name it. I lived in eagle river abour 15 minutes from anchorage and my dad would never take us into anchorage without carrying. It's doeable for sure, you just have to have the necessary things to keep yourself safe. you also get lots of criminals from other states fleeing the law up in Anchorage because, well, it's alaska and not many people would think to look there. but they're up there for sure. apd is suffering big because society/media are saying cops are bad and no one wants to join the police force anymore so they're really short staffed.

It’s nothing like it was in 70s. It’s very suburban now in some places and not as remote as it used to be along road systems.

Sherri and I have always said that the hardest part of leaving Alaska would be leaving the family that we've built here.

Health care: for lots of things people fly out to Seattle for treatment. With only 300,000 people in Anchorage you can't have all the specialists you'd have in a larger city.
I graduated from East High in 1974, so my information on schools is way out of date, but at that time we had an unusual number of PhDs teaching at the high school level. Various reasons, but some came up as military and stayed.
There was an Anchorage Community College. (My dad ran the welding school there). It was a bargain, but it's gone now. I went to college in PA and then left Alaska, so can't give further info.
I am getting ready to sail up the Inside passage this summer then across the gulf to Seward, moving there full time!

I've heard nothing but good things about AK. Being from Texas, I totally get the stereotypes. AK does sound like somewhere I'd love to live. I enjoy the cold. The one thing my son has told me is there aren't any air conditioners; where he lives anyways. On base at JBER. So when it's warm, it's warm. My husband and I plan on visiting in late Jan, early Feb (for our son's promotion) so we're probly gonna get the full brunt of an AK winter. We tried to get up there over the summer but those tickets aren't cheap. Which is a drawback. Maybe next summer. Interesting to hear each of y'all's perspective.
Yeah, there are very few places in Alaska that have AC. It's not needed often, but when it's needed we sure wish we had it! Winter can certainly be cold, but it is also absolutely beautiful! If you need any recommendations on things to enjoy in Alaska in January/February let us know!

So, you live in Los Anchorage......... Ha! I lived in Juneau for 15 years and never would've left except there was a recession caused by the oil companies. The last year or so before I left the state I worked and lived in Anchorage. In the winter the city is the dirtiest I've ever seen. Hookers walking the streets and drugs wherever you looked. There was a saying......Anchorage isn't too bad a town and the best thing is it's real close to Alaska. But.........I still love Alaska and miss it greatly.
Yes, we say that Anchorage is only 15 minutes from Alaska.
I loved the part about people asking if hotels in Alaska take U.S. currency. My sister and I once thought it would be fun to set up an exchange booth at the Anchorage airport to change US dollars in to "Alaska money." We didn't do it, of course! I miss Alaska, and am looking forward to coming back.

Wow ! Thank you for posting this video. I live in the Caribbean and, I've always been fascinated with Alaska. Every single video I've watched about Alaska, and there's no exception here, gives me the impression that Alaska is a big Family. Great video.
I think that's a great way to describe Alaska. That feels like it may be fading some in our more urban areas, but much of Alaska is still remote and it definitely has that feel.

+Commander Ooooh yeah, one of our favorite things about Alaska is that there is almost no humidity! It’s so nice!
Same here in Houston, man. Summer gets so hot and sticky and there's rarely a breeze so you're just walking around all sweaty and gross. Sweat is supposed to help cool you down, but here, it just makes it feel even hotter. Air conditioning is a Godsend, but conversely, the heating for winter is basically nonexistent and you have to be really careful because there have actually been instances of people turning on their heaters for the first time in years and having it catch fire because of all the dust and cobwebs clogging it up from disuse.
We really only have two seasons here: Summer and Fall-ish. In summer, temperatures can remain consistently withing the 90's to mid-100's range for weeks on end and average humidity rarely dips below 70%. In Fall-ish, you might get snow one day out of the year if everyone happened to appease the right snow gods that year, but temperatures can fluctuate between 20 F and 90 F with very little rhyme or reason. It's been cold enough to potentially snow in November only to get shorts-and-t-shirt sweat-your-balls-off weather on Christmas day. And God forbid the temperature ever drop below 40 F, at least if you're planning on driving anywhere in the city and actually arriving at your destination sometime before the heat death of the universe. People in this city drive like a-holes on a good day. If the temperature drops low enough for the roads to start freezing, suddenly it's like the apocalypse came early this year and everyone's driving like they're in a Mad Max movie and getting in traffic-stopping accidents left and right.
Personally, if you're gonna live in the state of Texas, San Antonio is a much better pick than Houston. There's a lot less humidity out there and driving is pretty chill as long as you avoid football stadiums during a game and university parking lots just in general. However, it's still too hot for my liking and Alaska's looking a lot more appealing, particularly Anchorage.
Lived in both Monroe Louisiana and Houston Texas. I could agree more. Some how I ended up in Phoenix. Alaska seems nice!

Ha! Well, what we meant is what once snow arrives, it never leaves. We've noticed that a lot of places will get snow and then it melts, and then they get more snow and it melts. That's kind of what winter looks like. For the most part, when snow arrives, it doesn't go anywhere until Spring.

Two Hearts One Roof summers in Anchorage can get into the mid 70's (F), and people are often surprised by that. I think the record high in Alaska is in the 90's (F)!

My husband and I love animals and have dreamed of having huskies and taking them for walks out in the wilderness. We both love the cold and enjoy snow very much. Adam, would you really like to get a big dog if you can persuade Sherry (I apologize if I misspelled your name) to get one someday? Also, what department of housekeeping did you work in and how did you like it? I currently work as a housekeeper and DO NOT like working for this particular management staff. To be honest, I am trying to get out of the housekeeping industry because I don't want to do it for the next three to five years. I recieved both an associates degree in Bible and a bachelor's degree in communication studies from LCU.
I probably wouldn't get too big of a dog, but something like a Golden Retriever would be perfect for me! I actually wasn't in housekeeping, I was always on the sales & marketing side of hotel operations. I started at front desk, and worked my way up until I was a Regional Director over a portfolio of hotels around Alaska. I really loved the hotel industry. However, there is no doubt that the housekeeping staff are the hardest working people in the entire hotel industry!

Hi, thanks for the questions! Public schools here are probably similar to public schools elsewhere. We do occasionally have snow days, but those only occur if we get more than about 12 inches of snow at one time. Very rarely will they cancel school for less that a foot of snow. I know some places around the country will cancel school if they receive even the smallest amount of snow, but not here in AK! Our school here is not year round, it starts in late August and goes until late May.
Not many snow days the busses have chains. 😂.
HIMy question is Do you need 4*4 or All Wheel drive cars to drive in anchorage or other parts of Alaska?
There are certainly many areas where a 4X4 vehicle helps. In Anchorage, and other city areas they do a good job of keeping the roads plowed. However, a lot of more rural areas can require a 4X4. It really depends on where in Alaska you are.

hi I think last time I asked a question, I finally moved away from north Carolina where I was and gotten sick so bad from humidity hot air and stuffy air heat all of that and I am right now in flagstaff Arizona, for one month now, when I got here I started feeling better rapidly as air here was different and cooler with dry air of course but soon am planning to be in Alaska next stop at my age over 50 need to settle somewhere beautiful that is Alaska,,, in north Carolina I had hypertension went up bad and it caused my blood sugar to go up for no reason my A1C was normal but blood sugar hit 191 mg on blood sugar count shaking all over and dry mouth was indication, I left on july 27th arrived in Arizona on 30th now soon gonna drive my car all way up to Alaska yikes hope everything goes well for me

Things here are certainly more expensive. The cost of living is higher than other locations. However there are other factors to take into account. We have no state income tax, here in Anchorage we have no sales tax, and income here is higher than most places. So, when you take everything into account, it isn't as bad as it seems if you just look at the cost of groceries and other items.
Hey guys! Just a quick question about the agriculture. Are there any fields, like soybean, corn, or wheat? Is there a lot of farmers markets with fresh produce or do you have to buy these from your grocery store? Are the prices pretty average or more expensive than other states? Thanks! Hi Amanda! The agriculture here is pretty interesting. Because of the long hours of sunlight here during the summer there is an extreme growing season. In fact, many world record size vegetables are grown here. Farmers markets typically run from May - September with the best months being August & September at the markets. The prices for fresh produce here is pretty great at the markets during the summer, but the rest of the year it's expensive at the super market. There are some farm subscriptions such as Full Circle Farms that ships fresh produce boxes here every week from farms in Washington. They are a little expensive, but you do get fresh produce year round that way.

crime in Anchorage is at an all time high! robberies, murders, rapes, theft...you name it. I lived in eagle river abour 15 minutes from anchorage and my dad would never take us into anchorage without carrying. It's doeable for sure, you just have to have the necessary things to keep yourself safe. you also get lots of criminals from other states fleeing the law up in Anchorage because, well, it's alaska and not many people would think to look there. but they're up there for sure. apd is suffering big because society/media are saying cops are bad and no one wants to join the police force anymore so they're really short staffed.
