I just turned off the compass, and u can assign a gesture in the touch pad for it to show up when you need it. So I played the game with it off and only brought it up briefly when I was truly lost.
You can literally turn off the compass which I did for the whole game. Also, I really don't understand your difficulty complaint.. there are literally 2 difficulties higher than what you played to make it more challenging? You didn't even talk about the actual flaws of the games, primarily the atrocious fast travel system, the map and the tedious traversal.

Once you figure out compass I think it works way better than if it just pointed at the objective. I would of gotten so lost if the compass didn't use waypoints. Especially in the vanaheim crater. You don't have to constantly stare at it either. You see it in your peripherals. You're just nitpicking something you couldn't get the hang of.

So I guess I’m going dark until I’m deep into the game. Can’t wait to start tomorrow at midnight! Ganna be a long night!
Huh, one thing I would praise about 2018 is the compass. It always told me the exact route to go, which is beneficial to me. Instead of trying to figure out how to get to my destination, the compass tells me how. It's a good time saver. If I want to explore, I know which ways I can go because the compass isn't pointing in those directions.
I agree with the compass point but maybe it's just me but because of how it was designed I was actually paying more attention to the world and overtime figured out where things were naturally although definitely at the beginning of each realm yes I completely agree that is a problem I'm glad it wasn't just me that was having that problem
The part where it's revealed that Freya is Atreus' mom was such a twist. I wouldn't have imagined that Kratos would get those memories removed. I guess I should have seen it coming since Atreus and Faye don't have the same hair colour but Freya's and Atreus' hair colour is the same.
2018 had the same compass and I preferred that over a singular direction because instead of trying to get to the location, it tells me exactly where to go instead of scratching my head to how to get to point “y”
I enjoyed the minimalistic feel of GOW 2018. This new game has a very different feel, it’s so dense, offers so many new characters and plot points…I’m not sure which formula I prefer yet, I have to replay Ragnarok and take my time with it.
Me to I beat ragnarok an found that 2018 was better. I took my time an enjoyed it but the writing just doesn't seem as sharp an the story to overly convoluted. Things happen to quickly to. Like u said u beat sooo........ if u didn't just don't read this Freya joining as quickly as she did felt wrong to me. Don't get me wrong it was cool when she's all of a sudden ur companion with her own skill tree but the end of 2018 an the beginning of this made it feel like she would b a nagging enemy that shows up periodically. Idk. An I love this series more then any other. So to feel disappointed or let down goes against my wishes as I want this game to succeed an b revered like 2018 is
I would really appreciate seeing how the game looks and runs on the base PS4 as I can't be bothered to spend money on a PS5 while there are so few games I want to play on it when my PC will probably get to play most of those games in a years time anyway.
I felt the same, but I got an invitation from Amazon to buy the digital edition at the normal MSRP, so I pulled the trigger and bought it. And man, I am so glad I did cause it's an amazing system. Just the controller features alone make it worth it. My PC hasnt seen much action since I got my PS5.
@@antthomas7916 yeah, I know that it's a great system and that it does some amazing things. And I have a DualSense and it deepens the immersion a lot in some games. But the way Sony is operating right now, with it's games coming quicker and quicker to PC I just can't justify the purchase as my financial situation, while not terrible, isn't that well off that I can just throw out half a grand for no reason. Or I could, but I'd rather invest it in other things in my life and just wait until Ragnarok comes to PC a few years down the line.
I have already seen their video, although the dedicated PS4 video isn't even out yet. But they mentioned that it's a really solid version of the game. The "problem" with their approach is that they don't have enough time to waste to check out the most taxing parts of the game, which are usually endgame content and the final few bosses. Nothing they can really do about that as that would be a disproportionate amount of time to spend for like 5-30 seconds of video material. But I will check out the PS4 video anyway, just to get a general impression of the game. They usually do a good job with those videos
Yeah that waypoint system is correct its basic data tree stuff, if you struggle thats on you, x to y equals people going the wrong way alot. Its a usability feature
Yo man, the compass is truly a complete non-issue. Did you ever look in the gameplay settings? It’s not “ever-present” if you don’t want it to be. I changed the HUD settings to custom and put the compass on ‘swipe’ pretty much as soon as I got it. I would just use the touch pad to toggle it on/off and it vastly improved my experience with the game. don’t make a big point on the issues with the compass without making it clear it’s a 100% OPTIONAL mechanic that the player can tweak to their liking. Great video tho lol I enjoyed your thoughts on the game either way
Watching this long after I played and beat the game, sorry to hear you had some problems where I had little to no problems with my game and I had no problem with the Puzzles and so on. it took me 53 hours to play through and do everything plus I took my time doing as much as possible.
The point on your compass doesnt change. It stays the same. The camera movement and the boundary of the compass line makes the point bounce all around that line. It's not a feature where there are more points leading to your destination
I finished GOW three times so I wished they moved away from the boat everywhere gameplay, fresh it up a bit. So finding a bit of a drag doing to the same structure again. 10hrs in and its a good game but am not blown away.
assuming it wasn’t because of changing the setting in the settings but i’m SOOO glad you’re actually able to see the distance on the compass for markers - one of my gripes with GoW 2018 was blindly following the compass and not knowing exactly how close i was to the destinations
I think it added to the surprise factor and anxiety in the game, exploring a new Norse World not knowing what's in store, not being spoiled by a quest marker was a cathartic experience for me personally. The distance markers are still a good change.
@@milkman-30 This game is misplaced. The scenes. The story. Everything. The only good thing about it is the performances. The actors have put their heart into their performances.
It sucks that Luke disliked the compass so much, but I quite liked it in 2018, and to hear it's basically identical in ragnarok is good to hear, personally. I hope you can make it smaller though, it's a bit distracting at the top of the screen like that
The media sold the first one as a generational game.. got it and it was a good story with virtually no gameplay progression and lazy enemy design. It's hard to trust the same people that gave the first game a 10. I'll wait for people actually dropping money to review this.
After finishing the game im still in aw on how amazing it really is. Santa Monica did exactly what I wanted them to do. I just wanted more and thats what they gave us. They didn't reinvent the wheel or do some stupid pointless thing just to make it different. No, they gave us everything we love, but more and better this time. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but wow I was shocked on how much was in here. Every-time I thought I knew what was gonna happen I was wrong. They just kept coming with surprises in the best way possible. The first game was a more grounded story that I absolutely loved. Ragnarock is a truly epic emotional conclusion to this story. One of the best things they did was flesh out the characters. For example Sindri and Brok got way more character development in this game and It made me love them even more. This game really earned itself as a sequel with the story and the gameplay. I loved Elden Ring so much, but I think GoW Ragnarock is my GOTY. Santa Monica really knows what they are doing and they are an insanely talented studio. Except for the UI. Somehow the UI in this game got worse.
"they gave us more" *Looks at the objectively worse combat system* Yeah, they gave us more... It's still a game at the end of the day and needs to nail that. It's more walking and cutscenes than anything else.
@@cokeweasel1064 This gotta be the most braindead reply ever lmao. The combat is pretty much the same with a couple more mechanics added actually. Way more bosses and enemies. You probably didn't even play the game LMAO.
@Chandler Burse They removed way more than they added. And what is new is pretty lame, the triangle attacks which are the main focus brake the flow of combat as you have to pause more or less for each one of them. They added a new weapon, but removed his bare hands abilities, and the new weapon is lame af. Check God of War Ascension - they did a great spear gameplay in the pvp section of the game.
I literally just completed the 2018 game for the first time yesterday, and immediately went n preordered ragnarok.. The navigation was probably the only real issue I had with the 2018 game, seems like this games nav might be just as jacked as the original one lol

I didn't like how Odin and Thor spoke, their dialogue was really weird, like they were mobsters or bikers. I thought Ryan Hurst was a great Thor and Odin was fine too, but the dialogue written for them just kind of takes me out of it and ruins the immersion in my opinion. None of the other God of War games were like that, and they never needed to be, instead they had solid writing and there-in, solid dialogue. The story of Ragnarok is fine even with the weird changes to Norse Mythological lore, they just should have phrased the dialogue different, so it doesn't feel like you're watching Sons of Anarchy or some other show, it felt just inappropriate for the setting.
I love when kratos just looks back at the camera before fighting Thor and says " get up and work harder if you wanna afford a PS5 and play with this" points to his ass
I loved the part where Kratos sits down and realizes its all a dream and his son is imaginary. His wife also sleeping with thor and kills him at the end, crazy!
Totally agree on the soft-lock... I was in a battle in a particular realm, and I died, but found that after the third re-spawn (I'm not that good) the trigger to pass through a "door" didn't happen, so I was essentially locked from progressing... re-loading checkpoints didn't help... the only thing that solved it was to progressively go back to each of the auto-saves and find a point where I was just prior to the first entry. Took me about 20 minutes of pfaffing around to resolve. My previous manual save was about 4 hours before.
@@JBrandonMercer123 I only had one or two, I distinctly remember starting a fight in the jungle area of the Vanaheim crater and not being able to finish it because a Nokken was completely invincible, which means invincible everything else lol. Load checkpoint solved it
@@JBrandonMercer123 I am guessing it's one of those 1 in 10 (or 1 in 100) events... I have to say, even outside of this, I did notice a few moments that were actually visually glitchy for me (uncharacteristically for Sony games). However, I totally accept all those technical issues (as I was able to move on) - but I'm less happy to forgive some of the cringey "modern" dialogue that had been forced into the game. I will forgive programming... but have less breadth to my heart in terms of writing words. I can live through both of these things (if I'm being honest).
I don’t fully remember but wasn’t the compass the exact same way in 2018 cause I vaguely remember it was a pain at first but after understanding it I never got lost again

Prob ER given that ragnarok is a sequel that doesn't really massively change how 2018 was according to many reviews that claim its rather incremental. ER was a special event that was like nothing we had seen before. But we will see. Who knows.
@@ironmaidenmetalgod I agree with you. Elden Ring is something new and special and as a huge Dark Souls fan Ill most likley favor the game over ragnarok. However, given the hype and praise around God of War I wont be surprised if it wins
@@daltonchitko I expect Ragnarok to win solely because GOTY awards are biased towards sony exclusives and the whole "games as movies" kind of thing. Elden Ring deserves it entirely though. Imma be honest one man's gripe is another man's compliment when it comes to the compass. I prefer the shifting nature, as long as you follow it it will navigate you where you need to go. Some of these realms are very annoying to navigate otherwise, just being given a general way point to follow wouldn't be good enough

My favourite part was when Odin shouted: "It's treason then!" And then does a mad 360 spin.

The whole appeal to a lot of these Sony IPS is tied to the Story and Graphics. I have never once been impressed by the gameplay loops for either of the God of Wars or the Horizons for that matter. Having mediocre traversal puzzles sprinkled into a third person action/adventure game should not be a requirement.
Highly enjoyed the first one and now I’m on my second playthrough with gow raganrok. God I love this game 😊👏
With the navigation it makes sense to me, especially if the map is busy in a sense mant different directions etc so in a complicated way it’s guiding you I’m happy with it, it might encourage you to even learn some of the map. So I like it
Is the compass not like this in gow 2018 anyways?
I replayed gow 2018 a few weeks ago. The compass is like this in 2018
@@BossBros7900 yes it is, his complains of the puzzle being too easy also doesnt make sense since their purpose is to break out the combat so they cant be too hard
Yeah I personally prefer the compass to be this way because it lets me know which path has optional chests and which path is the main way to go so I don’t accidentally go down the main path and then have to backtrack for side content
@@joshuacollado6433 exactly. And because the maps can be mazes, pointing me in a direction isn’t helpful. I might have no idea how to actually get there. It’s like a map with directions. I just turned off the compass, and u can assign a gesture in the touch pad for it to show up when you need it. So I played the game with it off and only brought it up briefly when I was truly lost.
Didn't know David Fincher was a big fan of God of War and Star Trek. Very cool.
It's really uncanny how much he sounds like david fincher, even his sense of humor is similar to david fincher in interviews.
GoWR is part 2 rather than a sequel. So the developers were probably working on it since the start of the 2018 game
Yeah. I think Luke is best when he sticks to recapping game stories beat by beat and maybe adding some Milquetoast commentary on the story or gameplay.
I DIDNT LIKE THE WAY THOR AND ODIN STORYS ENDED...I FELT THAT THEY WERE JUST SOMEWHAT STRONG AND NOT LIKE THE NUCLEAR POWER GODS THAT THEY WERE BACK IN GOD OF WAR 2018

The compass isn’t useless? Have you gone for platinum? It legit saved my life. There are multiple floors in many areas in which the compass helps immensely through navigation. Extremely confusing to traverse the realms without in some places.

Have I just become over sensitive to spoilers or are people showing things in thier reviews they say are spoiled free that genuinely suprise me and make me regret having watched it so soon.
For anyone watching…. Around 10:00 in theres a scene that genuinely surprised me and I wish I would have learned on my own.

No you are right. He spoiled a lot of stuff
There were some spoilers with subtitles too.
It was a bold choice for the devs to have a 20 min Odin X Kratos sex scene. Very wierd but brave
Ok I'm buying the game right now 😳
You can easily toggle the compass on and off during gameplay. I very rarely use it
I agree with the compass point but maybe it's just me but because of how it was designed I was actually paying more attention to the world and overtime figured out where things were naturally although definitely at the beginning of each realm yes I completely agree that is a problem I'm glad it wasn't just me that was having that problem
I didn't had any problem on the compas at all and i did 100% of the game.
I know it is just my experience but wasn't hard to understand to me
The part where it's revealed that Freya is Atreus' mom was such a twist.

My favorite scene was when Kratos said "it's Ragnarok time" and God of War'd all over Odin. Truly one of the video games of all time.
Amazing that was amusing
That shirt makes it look like you’re about to board the Enterprise
According to digital foundry, the game is very well optimised no matter what console you will be playing on.
Check out the Digital Foundry video.
You have to delete your game save for the Heimdall fight so he can read your next move, great MGS Easter egg
I loved the bit when kratos fought eivor from assassins creed and then made out with the logo of ubisoft
Biggest complaint is he thought give me a balanced experience was too easy and not a challenge. *Looks at give me a challenge difficulty*

The compass was that same way in the last game. It can at sometimes be annoying but I think it was the better choice for these games.
The 2018 writing was better. And that's all I am gonna say about it.
And even then, I think this game still had some really good writing and probably some of the most emotional moments for, me at least
I'll wait for people actually dropping money to review this.

its a masterpiece.

Interesting. Completed the game on my PS5 with zero soft lock issues.
