HO Scale Burlington Northern SD40-2B Project Walkaround and Switching Action BN 7502

- Recently ScaleTrains announced the first ever production SD40-2B in plastic. I wanted to show the model that I built and painted many years ago based on an early production Kato SD40-2.
BN's SD40-2B was a result of a wreck repair and as a result was a one-off resulting in something that I'd never have believed would ever be done in mass produced plastic. There were three SD40-2B units on BN's roster, each of which had their own unique spotting features. BN 7502 was the only one to have its dynamic brake grids moved to the nose of the locomotive. I think it is the coolest looking of the trio of misfits.
I walk you through what I did over a decade ago to build this unit and we'll watch it in action on the north end of the Sioux City yard on my HO Scale Black Hills and Eastern Model Railroad.

I model Union Pacific in HO Scale and U.P.s nic name is unique power as some model train hobbyist say, but I must say that BN SD40-2B unit is glorious! And one just think that the U.P. had placed an order of SD40-2B locomotives with EMD in the mid 70s to operate with their DDA40X locomotives on hot Z piggyback trains from Los Angeles to the mid-west, but changed the locomotive order to cab A units. These cabbed SD40-2 locomotives became the renown SD40-2 "Fast Forties" with special gearing to run fast hot Z piggyback trains with the Centennials......
Fun! I like UP's power too. Their roster didn't look that much different than the BN's in the 1980s. The notable exception being the DD40X fleet as you mention. I have a small handful of UP engines myself. Mostly to represent the former CMO/CNW Worthington, MN sub. Would like to be able to justify an HO scale DD40X (the Athearn Genesis model is beautiful), but having a hard time justifying a unit that doesn't really fit anything I'm doing! And I don't have any fast forties!!!
