Walt's wife here, although I'm a girl and knows nothing about trucks or trucking I love the open road so therefore love your videos. When I was young I remember vividly driving on Route 66 when we moved to CA. Since then I have been a road junkie! I did not watch this video. LOL!
Hey Indiana Jack I really enjoy your videos my name is trucker Jim I've been truck driving since 2010 I'm going to see you out there one of these days thanks for the videos
Hi Jack, enjoyed the video, thanks ! now where I come from we don't run on driver logs or tachograph and no driving hour restrictions but it is interesting watching your video and to see what you drivers have to put up with just to stay legal. Keep on truckin and you tubin.
I've been driving since I was 18 in my 7 years I only used ELD for 3 months and then drove my dads rig up until then with paper logs I am only intimidated by the fact I hardly ever did the full 10hr/30min breaks especially during winter I am now considering looking for a new profession I am tired of the government trying to unnecessarily regulate everything
He's been driving for 7 years that don't make him an old timer. I've been at it for well over 20 years, now I'm an old timer. I don't mind e-logs at all. Drive stop and push a button. Easy.
Good job Jack. I just ordered my KeepTrucking ELD, bought a new Samsung tablet and downloaded the app. Been playing with the app for a few days and it's not all that difficult. Keep Trucking said the ELD's are on back order and won't ship until the 30th of December. They sent me a "proof of purchase" and told me that I shouldn't get a ticket if I show I have ordered an ELD. Hope they're right. If anyone's thinking about getting an ELD, I would recommend the KeepTrucking eld. It's pretty simple. Good luck.
There is good and bad in everything. Yes ELB's will limit the driver to set rules governed by it. I remember when we used paper logs we would put ourselves off duty or sleeper to not waste our hours when were stuck waiting. But we were only cheating ourselves because we didn't really sleep cause we had to stand around to wait. We had to be there in case we were called on. Then we would hit the road tired cause we waited half the day. I remember how long the days would get. Dispatchers would tell you the load needs to get there the next day. They were very aware that we new how to fix our logs to show we had hours left but, in return we were sleep deprived. And if you tried to run legal you would be rewarded with shitty loads or none at all. Your truck would leave the yard but you were not the driving it. It was common for drivers to run 2 log books. Companies took advantage of us and drove us hard cause they knew they could. Now the game is up! These new ELB's are taking over and there is no more being forced to do more than you are legally allowed to. Cause now the company is at fault too if you are caught. Drivers do there 14 hours maximum and no matter where you are you are done.. This will make it easier on the driver. No more being told he's got to get there! Now carriers will have to make sure customers dont waste drivers time when they load or unload. Maybe charge the customers for unnecessary lost time waiting around..I see positive things here. Others will argue there none. This was my experience as a OTR without ELB's I coil see how easier they would have made my job if they were around back then..
Except you can still sit around for half a day waiting on a load, not start your clock, and then get a load and drive just as you did before. The problem being the same, turn it down and slowly go broke, or run it. And the true issue is now, when your stuck out longer due to traffic or other issues, you can now be forced to spend your 10hr break in a unsafe area.. Like side of the interstate or a ramp.. Instead of driving to the next safe haven and actually parking... But go ahead, tell me how safer these are again.
Thanks for an informative video! If you are able - it would be interesting to see a presentation of different types of ELDs and how they are installed.
I don't know if you have said a thing about how you fell about the ELD. I have never use one, I have not drove a semi from March 2012, As I retired. So how do you fell know
Thank you Jack!! getting back in the saddle after extended down time, looks like there's been some changes in how we keep logs! 1st thing that popped in my head, "wow, wish I would have had this back then!" Are you finding a way to use 4&5 off and on, with 0.5 break, method for hard running? curious!
The only eld I've ever used is the KT. I'm changing jobs and was just wondering if you're able to edit your hours in the KT app? I could change my hours from a week ago, even if I had signed it. It was actually better than a logbook because I didn't have to write everything by hand. I've had several inspections and I would show them the previous weeks logs and never had an issue. Maybe my electronic unit wasn't working correctly? Just wondering what your experience is with editing your hours? Thanks for the video!
Very nice video. I'm just learning about ELD and must confess all this requirements are overwhelming. Your iPad mini looks like it has been nicely installed. Do you mind telling which holder are you using? Thanks
's Do you guys maybe know if it's possible to work with two companies (KeepTrucking, and one more) in the same time? To unplug one company's device when you go overtime, and plug the other company's device?
I have 25 trucks. all less then 3 years old. I have eight drivers that have already put in they're notice and saying they are leaving the industry . these are my best drivers all with 10 + years experience. now either I sell all my new trucks and buy pre 95 models or I hire some wet behinds the ears accident prone swift graduate . this is happening all over, this industry is already short on drivers and now they're leaving left and right. this will kill the indipendnt owner operator.
The whole idea was to kill o/o and small fleets so all these mega carriers can Jack up the prices and still pay their robotic drivers 20 cents per mile and spend an eternity away from their home and loved ones ,this is inhumane, for safety my butt they just took away all good and safe drivers and replace them with 21 year olds just of swift school.
Indiana Jack Love your Videos i have few questions about your eld how is it working for you and how much do you pay for it .please advise.my eld will be out of business in next few weeks and i have to get new one asap. thank you and be safe out there ...
I.purcased one of these and after two days I was on the phone with support trying to fiqure out what was wrong with the dam thing... been having issues with it since I purchased it..
Where did you get the mount for your mini ipad i need one for a tablet. Good video. Hope this new reg. Dont destroy ous. For now just keep praying loads come up
Okay thanks. I have another question. I try to connect my ELD, but I only have a 7 pin connector. My truck is a Volvo 2005. What can I do about it? Any suggestion?
This new ELD is just another unnecessary regulation by our Federal Government. Seems like everything our Federal Governments gets involved in, they end up screwing things up and always make things so much harder on the American people. A true professional driver doesn't need anyone to tell them when they should take a break and when they have to stop too sleep! Hope to see you in Tulsa one of these days and have shop talk with coffee or a meal. Happy trails and drive safe!
LOL @ Rumble Truckin... this ol timer never had a chargable accident and never killed people and I sure in the world never thought my shit stunk. Have a good one!
Rumble Truckin your a dumbass. I've run paper logs and elogs. I've ran more tired on elogs then I did on paper. I don't need anyone to tell me when to sleep. Elogs force you to drive your 11 hours and if your not tired when you lay down for your 10 hours and toss and turn for 6 hours you only get 4 hours of sleep. On paper you can pull over go to sleep for a few hours get up and go again. Most big company's is the only ones out killing people and shit and they're on elogs..yall are just idiots like the government
Justin Kirkland did you just call me a dumbass and misspell the word you're? This pretty much voids your opinion. If you don't like the government and think the government in America "are idiots" you are welcome to try one in another country.
baikerboy2010 If you can access the power cord, you are in control. Unplug it before doing doing anything illegal. Set your status to OD or sleeper. Drive around town or truck stop. If cop stops you, say you're within 100 miles radius of your terminal & NOT required to log. Anytime you want to be legal again, come to a stop. Plug it in. Update staus. Drive. Need to save your hours? Say you're a few miles from the truck stop, pull over & stop, unplug it, set status to sleeper, drive to the truck stop for the night. Same with not waiting the full 10 hours.
got my eld 3 days ago. If your loading and unloading expect 8hrs of drive as you will run out of 14 hr clock. If your loading then you might get the 11 hrs drive. If onduty not drive you cannot roll your truck without it going onduty. If your in sleeper birth or off duty for 5 min you can roll the truck around the yard without it changing duty status. You cannot add fuel if your doing this. Stay logged in over 36 or 34 hr reset and you can start in the yard and roll the truck to the trailer hook and do vi, get yard fuel then start your 14h day. Only idling around can do this. At customer go right offduty. go onduty after your just about ready to go to show 30 min. Same as fuel. Rol;l in switch to on duty not driving. Then after 5-10 min fuel switch off duty and go get your food receipt whatever. These are some tips to help. Our company is using a mechanic account so we can log in move the truck around the yard hook to trailer and vi fuel then log out of mechanics account and log into our then our clock starts. You cannot change the 14 hr clock so be prepared to get out of there once you log in. Goodluck all you will loose 1 run every 2 weeks. I use to do 3 runs and 2 the next. ELD you will only get 2 runs one week 2 runs the next. What I mean by runs is pick delivery pick deliver return and repeat.
Keith Kmilek Yeah i figured to slide it all the way to the right side of the dashboard. Looks like the cord is long enough. But my trucks a 96 W900L 3406e Cat ( I know nobody ask me all that...lol) so until they close that loop hole im on paper! And knowing big brother i wont be surprised if they do.
If you really wanted to hide it, there is sometimes space behind the gauge cluster and space behind some other panels of the dash that it can be mounted to where it can still get accurate gps signal. you just gotta be brave enough to take apart the panels and carefully get them back together.
I've also heard some rumors like regardless if you have 1999 engine but if it's with 9 pin connector you are still obligated to put eld. And then I've looked to even older engine's connectors. They are white or gray color and have 6 pin connector and that one is also possible to connect to eld, so techincaly every truck can be eld equiped...
On your iPad Mini what model is it how do you like it so far and can you use it set up for Wi-Fi or does it have to be through a phone Carrier? Thank you
to keep going, you either hafta go team, or be happy being parked all the time, that's what the major carriers want, us, out of business, or governed by their company policy
Guessin' that you would each have your own tablet to pair with the ELD, just as you had individual log books. Or maybe the App can have two driver's logs on one. ONE ELD for both, in either case. Just learning this system, supposed to be up & Runnin' by Monday - as usual, should be "Interesting".
What do you do if you're only driving local most of the time, which doesn't even require logging, but maybe every couple weeks you're delivering loads for two or three days that do require logging?
Well, this month we have driven over the 8 days alotted in the past 30 days, so I understand we do have to have logs for those days. We've had probably ten days of all day driving this month. Otherwise, we're just delivering grain within the 100 miles radius and don't need logs over that.
Does your ipad/tablet have to be connected to internet to use app? Once app is downloaded, do you need consistent internet to keep using app? If i buy a tablet to use, do I nees a wireless plan is what I am getting at? Or can i use internet from home, download app, and use in truck? Any info will help. Thank you
+Jeffery Punches that is a good question Jeff. The unit will still function but in a limited way. It does not use much Wifi data but it does use a lot of Bluetooth communicating with the ELD. I almost have to keep it plugged in all day long.
I have watched some other trucker videos where they use a thing called "QualCom". Is this the same thing? And weren't you already on electronic logs? Thanks.
avlisk there’s different version of an ELD it’s like a brand, most popular is Qualcomm, peoplenet, and zonar which companies usually install in their fleets. Jacks an owner op so many owner ops who aren’t leased onto a bigger company usually settle for something simpler due to the fact that things like Qualcomm and other “ELD’s” have a cost per month plan
Keep Trucking does not provide the hardware? I believe you mention you are using your IPAD? Where did you get your pad bracket? it looks like a good strong set up. Last question: How do you like Keep Trucking so far? thanks for the video
+amanmeets yes you will need an internet connection. You can probably use a hotspot from your cell phone. Or get a mini iPad that has an internet connection in it with a carrier
+Robert Lucus I am not a big fan of the fact that you can't drive faster than 4 miles an hour without it putting you on the driving line. Supposedly they are going to fix that in the next update.
Very much appreciate this particular vid. Answers many questions. Thanks P.s. why did you take the company's eld out? Did you quit cr england or did they give you a choice?
from another ELD provider they page show different wires harnesses an Plugs For KW, Peterbilt, Volvo, international, so swapping truck to truck would mean new equipment it's rubiks cube for trucking ..
indianajacktrucker This is my case. I have 2000 Volvo vnl 64t610 with 1999 cummins n 14 10speed. I called the DOT inspector of Illinois and the guy was crystal clear. My truck is exampt from eld. Now, is every stupid uniformed cop out there is going to be ok with it and not giving some oos. or warning we'll see...
thebacheafghan apparently all the younger guys don't want it either. The trucking industry is goin down the toilet. Every month the shortage of truck drivers goes up.
Pay drivers by the hour instead of the mile and presto .... safer roads, less stressed decisions. Owner/Ops can charge by the hour too, just like heavy equipment operators do.
I don't mind e-logs at all been using it for the last 3 years now. But every driver should know how to edit the log. What happened to me a few times is I go to fuel up set it to on duty fueling, jump back in the truck and pull forward just to jump out and go into the store. 30 minutes later I get in the cab and it's still on duty. Now you have to fix it or lose 30 minutes out of the day. Learn how to edit the logs. Or call your company for help.

BTW Jack, nice install. You make everything you do look easy.😉
Fantastic job on doing the ELD cheers from Australia
Will I need data on my iPad to run keep trucking?
Good video Jack. I'm still rolling my old 93 Peterbilt 379 ELD Free..😎👌
What happened to you in Shreveport ?
Well done Jack. You do make it look less intimidating. Thank you for sharing.

Ellis Reyes good. leave. we don't need you whining ol timers anymore.
Rumble Truckin to each their own
Only a very unwise man would make this remark. Shame on you and to your very unwelcome demise. I pity you!
Ellis Reyes I agree, gubnet screws everything up, Big Brother 1984

Do you need to use phone data(hotspot) for it to record ur logs? Or can you use bluetooth n no internet?
Does the tablet have to have cellular service or is it just used as a screen
Does it use your internet as u are going down the road
Do you have KeepTruckin
Good job Jack. I just ordered my KeepTrucking ELD, bought a new Samsung tablet and downloaded the app. Been playing with the app for a few days and it's not all that difficult. Keep Trucking said the ELD's are on back order and won't ship until the 30th of December.

+Buddy Carroll glad to hear that Buddy. Let me know how the installation goes. Not just for me but everyone else who is watching.
Can someone please tell me if i have to leave my ELD connected always? Does it affect the battery?

Ramman I agree with you
Except you can still sit around for half a day waiting on a load, not start your clock, and then get a load and drive just as you did before. The problem being the same, turn it down and slowly go broke, or run it. Get paid by the hour! Work your eleven and park it. Now you'll have safer roads because drivers are less stressed AND fully rested.
Don't mind the ELD . Just let me take my brakes when I want like the old day
Thanks for an informative video!
If you are able - it would be interesting to see a presentation of different types of ELDs and how they are installed.
I don't know if you have said a thing about how you fell about the ELD. I have never use one, I have not drove a semi from March 2012, As I retired. So how do you fell know

What comes with the kt package? : gps, tablets
Hey jack. Do you need a data signal the whole time your driving ?
should i have one gps device, one separate tablet device for eld and phone.... 3 devices??? in the truck??
How much did you pay for the device ?
Does it have any monthly subscription ?
My new company telling me I only need my android phone and keep trucking app. No eld. Is that true?
What year is your truck?
@@indianajack 2014
@@tvong81 I think you are able to use your phone as long as you pay for the eld subscription.

They were the brackets for my old Qualcomm. I had to do some retrofitting but it worked.

Just learning this system, supposed to be up & Runnin' by Monday - as usual, should be "Interesting".
good guy jack, keep safe out there
How well does the Keep truckin app eld work? How much do they charge for the service?
Are you still interested to know about Motive KT
What do you do if you're only driving local most of the time, which doesn't even require logging, but maybe every couple weeks you're delivering loads for two or three days that do require logging?
+Carol Duffy you don't have to log your hours if that is the case.
Well, this month we have driven over the 8 days alotted in the past 30 days, so I understand we do have to have logs for those days. We've had probably ten days of all day driving this month. Otherwise, we're just delivering grain within the 100 miles radius and don't need logs over that.
WHAT YEAR WAS THE TRUCK???
2008
Does your ipad/tablet have to be connected to internet to use app? Once app is downloaded, do you need consistent internet to keep using app? If i buy a tablet to use, do I nees a wireless plan is what I am getting at? Or can i use internet from home, download app, and use in truck? Any info will help. Thank you
+Jeffery Punches that is a good question Jeff. The unit will still function but in a limited way. It does not use much Wifi data but it does use a lot of Bluetooth communicating with the ELD. I almost have to keep it plugged in all day long.
Thank you sir. I appreciate it!
Jeff, you'll be paying for that App a monthly $ and you're cell phone bill will go up too, unless you're company is reimbursing you for the cost?
we need any internet to run the tab or not or it proveded by the keeptruckin device
+Kamboj Express you will need internet. You can use your phone as a hotspot if you have to
Thanks for the video Jack!
Thanks much.
Keep Trucking does not provide the hardware? I believe you mention you are using your IPAD?
Where did you get your pad bracket? it looks like a good strong set up.
Last question: How do you like Keep Trucking so far?
thanks for the video
The only part they provide is the ELD itself, the part you saw me install. I already had the mount leftover from my old Qualcom.
Thank you sir for sharing the info, just install and connected like you did...!
Hey Jack thanks for this awesome video, I'm just wondering what exact model are you using for that iPad
+Waseem Abdelaziz it is the newest iPad Mini. Any iPad will work.
indianajacktrucker sounds good thanks bud
Thank you my brother I really appreciate 🙏🏻
I notice you have been using that for a time, Is there a line 5 for doing what you want to do. Like going home
+James Baxter yes it has a way to do personal conveyance
Thanks. I like watching you. You don''t use the words that a lot of drivers do
Yes but bobtail only. No trailer, chasy etc..
Ok, Nice
How do I purchase this item?
The App is free and you buy the ELD from Keeptruckin.com
Sir do we need internet cellphone connection on ipad mini ,please advice.
+amanmeets yes you will need an internet connection. You can probably use a hotspot from your cell phone. Or get a mini iPad that has an internet connection in it with a carrier
Jack, thanks for the video. If you're a company driver, who is responsible for buying an ELD?
when you connect eld you have to have the engine of or on
I don't know why you would want to keep your engine light on but probably off would be better
good video, thanks Mr Jack
Thx for the vid jack!
Excellent video I'm familiar with keep trucking app already that was a very good instructional video too bad I can't stand Eld thank you very much
+Robert Lucus I am not a big fan of the fact that you can't drive faster than 4 miles an hour without it putting you on the driving line. Supposedly they are going to fix that in the next update.
Very much appreciate this particular vid. Answers many questions.
Thanks
P.s. why did you take the company's eld out? Did you quit cr england or did they give you a choice?
Trucker Daddy he's got the truck paid for and left knight a year ago. He's owner op with Traveloko.
I like how you do your videos jack I'm getting to be a owner operator .
I drive motorcoaches for a living
I wonder if exemptions apply for a motorcoach that is older than 1999 as well.....
Driveaway / towaway is exempt
from 1999 and older... YOUR ARE EXEMPT.
You still out there driving motorcoachs?
I hope all the elogs back fire for dot n they get rid of this BS
from another ELD provider they page show different wires harnesses an Plugs For KW, Peterbilt, Volvo, international, so swapping truck to truck would mean new equipment it's rubiks cube for trucking ..
Thanks for the vid. I know the Ipad or tablet needs to have a data plan. Do you think I could use my wifi jet pack to serve as a data plan?
+petie6464 that is what I use. A Verizon wifi jetpack
indianajacktrucker Awesome, sure didn't want another data plan!
Thank you very much for the video
Hey there someone help me how I can use personal conveying?
You can use personal conveyance if you don't have a load and you need to go to a hotel or dinner, even Walmart.
Nice turorial Jack.. Drive safe.
You failed to mention how much a month it cost to use the ELD / AOBRD.
I think it’s like 25 bucks a month.
@@indianajack thats cheap
Thank you brother 🙏🙏
If I am not wrong, with 1999 engine and older you will not have to have eld in your truck. i really hope it will be that way...
+wikilix you are correct
indianajacktrucker
This is my case.
Good video I like your information
You said that right. Shreveport.
How old is your truck ?
+James Seibert 2008
Olde Red becomes Tech Red! 🚘 Looks like you’re do a ride-a-long at 3:39. Stay SAFE!
Complete nation wide strike is the only way to stop this crap but that will never happen. End of a Career.
William Crivello thanks guys like u leave space for younger ones
thebacheafghan apparently all the younger guys don't want it either. The trucking industry is goin down the toilet. Every month the shortage of truck drivers goes up.
am all for it
Still looking good
Pay drivers by the hour instead of the mile and presto .... safer roads, less stressed decisions.
