French mercenary Bob Denard was reportedly leading a putsch in the
Indian Ocean island state of the Comoros. Although said to have "retired" two years ago, Denard was reported by a Comorian diplomat in Paris to be back on his old stomping ground on Thursday (28/9) holding the current President hostage, even though he faces trial in France in connection with the killing of former Comoran president Abdallah. Denard, who has admitted having carried out covert operations for a number of countries was sentenced two years ago to a five-year suspended jail term for a 1977 attempted coup in the west African state of Benin. He has been involved in at least two putsches in the Comoros. In May, 1978, Denard, who has two children from his marriage to a Comoran woman, overthrew President Soilih. Denard brought Abdallah, the Comoros' first head of state, back to power, but became the islands' de facto ruler as head of the presidential guard, which was financed by South Africa. On November 27, 1989, Abdallah was shot dead in Denard's presence in the presidential palace.

En 1995, Soldats, nous étions de plan Vigipirate à l'aéroport Roland Garros de la Réunion. Dans la nuit un avion était arrivé des Comores avec à son bord Bob Denard. A peine sur le tarmac il fut embarqué à bord d'une P4 sous un drap pour échapper à la presse, puis les gendarmes l'emmenèrent à "la redoute" (gendarmerie de l'autre côté de St Denis). En fait ça ne c'est pas exactement passé ainsi. Au petit matin un gendarme vient nous dire que Bob Denard avait passé la nuit dans les locaux accolés aux notres, que sous le drap c'était un leurre et que pour échapper au seul journaliste qui était resté la nuit devant la gendarmerie de l'aéroport, ils allaient traverser nos locaux. La porte s'ouvrit, un premier gendarme, puis Bob Denard suivi d'un second gendarme. Moustache blanche, pantalon de treillis noir, brodequins de type américain, veste et casquette cam, il nous salua d'une voix sûre et franche et je doit dire aussi avec beaucoup d'élégance avec un "Bonjour Messieurs". Et c'est là l'intérêt de mes propos : Un conscrit, affalé sur un lit picot, séduit par l'indéniable charisme du personnage, se leva avec une énergie jusqu'à lors inconnue, puis dans un garde à vous approximatif lui rendit le salut par un "mes respects mon Colonel". Dès fois il ait des petites histoires futiles mais néanmoins cocasses qu'on a envie de raconter avant qu'elles ne se perdent à jamais.
