Its cool to watch your decision making process. You spent a lot of energy. So many ins and outs of the boat. Good thing you were able to get to your dry bag before it got away. Well done mate ..well done 👍
Another awesome one, Ken. Well done. again, thank you for sharing it with us. Seeing that bag in the background floating as you kept going, literally had me going "Oh sh*t!" and then your reactions, both in the commentary and when you discovered it was gone, but not gone far, had me in tears of laughter. That's the kinda sh*t that would and does happen to me in all aspects of life lmao! Cannot wait til the next episode!
That moment of realisation "OMG, where is my bag!" LOL. My dry bag has two straps with those carabiner style spring loaded clips on them. I always clip it to the deck bungee or some other thing attached to the boat, as well as using the bungee itself to hold it down. Then if it does get knocked out there is a secondary fastening so it should just get dragged along behind.
I wouldn't actually want the bag attached to my kayak in whitewater. It could easily have messed with my strokes/braces/roll, and caused bigger problems for me in the middle of that rapid.
Hey Ken, I’m pretty new to Kayaking, my wonderful Wife purchased one for me, for my 60th Birthday on the 4th August 2024 (yep, a couple of days ago) and I have been binge watching lots of your videos, to learn tips. I live on a Narrowboat and love the peace and quiet. Now I have a Kayak and I’ve found and subscribed to your channel, I’m in a very happy place in my life. All the best from England. Joe🙏🏼
What an awesome trip! Your experience and expertise in whitewater paddling is amazing - you make it look easy. It's great to see you enjoying yourself so much!
"Crappy food in cool locations." That's a winner! 😂 I know you could have easily run ALL of those rapids, but I appreciate you setting a good example in weighing out the consequences. Great video, Ken!
Oh no, you give the cooking show plan to everyone ☺️ Nice video, keep up the good work. Wow, the rocks look dangerous. Mosquitos are a real plaque this year, same here in Germany.
I've been enjoying your videos, thank you for sharing! I appreciate your mature choice not to run some of the risky rapids on this trip. It's quite exciting to watch, I hope you'll complete the trip safely.
I think stuff like this is great, seeing paddlers with decades of experience skip rapids should hopefully remind less experienced folks that sometimes the best move is to portage and move on.
@@jacobnieves7728 it's also a reminder to us seasoned paddlers that you have to consider all of the factors of the situation before running a rapid. There are times when a rapid that would normally be no problem, should be portaged.
Great job Ken, I am really enjoying these videos from Algonquin Park. Awesome! We are so blessed in Canada. My heart goes out to people of Jasper God bless you all. Thanks again Ken.
Hahaha.. New kayaker here who is scared of white water. I did learn a valuable lesson though.. NEVER buy a used kayak from a white water kayaker..hahahaha,. Love your adventures :) Thanks for sharing.
Wow, this is truly a spectacular trip. I loved hearing your thought process and your reasoning behind your decisions as you make wise choices. Could you also do a short animation of your route on a map at the beginning? It would give a great overview of the day and help visualize for viewers (like me) who are not familiar with algonquin.
I am now thinking of mailing you my rabbits foot so you can recharge it! Turned around to look at the camera and noticing the dry bag was super lucky, as traveling back up stream only to find your dry bag in an eddy (usually on the other side of the river) can be taxing on a multi day trip. Looked like great runs on CII-III+'s and is a great difference between the yak and a canoe being able to skip the portages. Fishing many rivers here at home that have CIII runs, usually on a sit on top, I have lost more gear than I will ever admit and own enough light carabiners and leashes to hold everything I own to the boat, so usually losing hats, shirts, shoes, and those items that end up on the floor, my clothes bag is like gold for there is nothing better at the end of the day than to slide into dry gear, the river Gods were definitely looking out for you!
Two weeks ago we were assailled by mosquitoes paddling in Papineau-Labelle, followed by a week of nearly bug-free luxury in Rouge-Matawin. What a relief.
LOL, you got soooooo luck that bag came floating back to you. You get back down in my area to do a multi day trip that’s not class 5 nar nar boating. Hit me up. Late October I might be on a 4 day run of the wilderness section of the Rogue River. You would enjoy it.
Great video and great trip, thanks for taking the time to put this video together. By the way, what size duffle bag are you using for transporting your smaller bags of gear?
Fantastic Adventure Ken, with some amazing paddleing skills demonstrated. Some of them wrappeds looked very wild but you managed to get some great video footage. I like the way the that even at your skill level you put safety first. Do you know this may be the first video you have made where you say a bad word 😮 just as you look back to check the back camera mount and realise your dry bags gone lol. I have to ask did somebody come out and bring you another camera. Because I'm part 1 you lost your front camera or did you just have a backup. Awesome video again can't wait for part 3
Finally got around to watching this. I was surprised when you said your satcom is in your big main dry bag. As an emergency communications tool, I'd think you'd want it more readily accessible, particularly in a situation where you get separated from some or all of your gear. Assuming you're using the Zoleo, it seems like it should be safe to keep it in e.g. a PFD pocket?
I am happy you just noticed on time the loss of that bag, especially since you lost your Gopro already. One can do without dry clothes, without toiletpaper (that's in fact the less important piece of equipment, I even don't carry it on my trips) and without satelite phone. But it certainly can break the moral and take out the joy! Good to see it didn't happen🙂
I am just starting to watch your videos and see if it's something I want to do. Would you be able to do a video on the camera's you use to make your videos? I plan on getting a live aboard trawler after my wife dies and I am able sell our home, it's a 5 bedroom and as I will not the need for it.
As always, I really enjoyed your video. Your one of my go-to channels for kayaking knowledge and entertainment. Have you ever checked out the Bonafide RVR 119? It is a sit-on-top river fishing kayak that I use for my kayak camping. I have taken it threw lite class 3's and it handled great. When I need to scout something ahead, I just stand up in the kayak. It makes trips like that a lot easier. Every kayak has its place and I think the RVR would have been a good one for that trip. Again, love your content and keep it up. Thanks.

The accidental framing of the orange dry bag floating behind you was perfect. I'm glad it made its way back to you!
:). I sure was happy to see it!!
Words to live by- “ there’s no need to drive faster into that rock you want to avoid.”
Ha! T-shirt!!!
I vote yes please to more episodes of Bad Food in Beautiful Places. 😂❤
Ha! Working on it...
Super fun trip! great white water. So glad you got your gear back! I hate when the river god takeths. lol 👊🏼

Ohhhh buddy! Saw that pack floating away, thought for sure it was gonna be disaster.
:) So glad it had a happy ending...

Great to hear it Joe! It sounds like you've caught the paddling bug! :) Now you'll need to get your wife a kayak for her birthday! :)

Cant wait for the new cooking show ken 🤣 i need some kayak camping food inspiration.

@@PaddleTV Ba ha ha!! That would be a blast!! 🤣👍💯
What an amazing video and such a beautiful section of the river. Good job!
Thank you!
This was fantastic. You just seem to soar through those rapids with hardly any effort. Like you said time and experience.❤️
A very enjoyable video. I like your narration and camera work, very professional. Excellent content. 👌
Thanks!
What an amazing trip. 😊
Might be the best video you’ve ever posted!!!❤
Thank you! Might have been my favourite to ever film! :)
Awesome I'm right there with you .....
I like the way you explain the puzzle.... The moment you realize that you lost the orange bag😲😲

I know it took a lot of discipline to portage some of those rapids, but being a solo kayaker with a fully loaded boat, you made the right decision.

What a tough go - the mosquitoes would kill me! 😂

Glad you enjoyed it! I like your idea for the animation. Time is my big enemy...
Being a new kayacker myself...l lol that looks crazy. I think i will stick to calm lakes for now.

Thnk you, amazing video. I wonder did you ever think about putting camera on a fishing rod to inspect rapids from high above?
Cheers! No, I've never considered that.

Would love to do the Rogue. I did a 4-day trip on the Rogue about 25 years ago, and loved it. I'm due for another!

I use bungee cords only for positioning; something additional for securing. PS another channel has a recipe for military grade bug repellent.
This was one of the things I would change on this boat - add a few anchor points on the stern for tying things down.
8:53 Is there a lightweight bag available on the market in the style of the Duluth canoe pack?
I would love to know if there was! That's exactly what I would want. A mesh canoe pack!
I am happy you just noticed on time the loss of that bag, especially since you lost your Gopro already. Love your informative & entertaining videos...but please sir, please, it's pronounced port-AH-ge.
Nails on a chalkboard 😂
Ha!! I hear you... I bounce back and forth. I've spent so much time paddling with friends in the US, that it just comes out that way sometimes. :)
If it doesn’t exist you should make a helmet with a face attachment for bugs. I guess it would look like a fencing mask but with netting lol
Ha!
What was the online gauge at for reference? Been thinking of this stretch for a while.
It was around 28 when I started. It dropped around 1 per day, although the water jumped up 3 with the storm I had on the 2nd night.
That Drybag moment, comedy gold, cheers Ken 😮😂
