  • Nintendo World Championships is not as it initially seemed... lacking content... especially compared to a 10 year old game that was similar... I dunno.. it is still fun... but they could have done so much more.

@@Madlittlepixel it's sad that games and sometimes even movies and music became perishable goods, you can have them for very limited time, like a couple of months to a few years and bam, they are no longer there. Some people of course can try to bring some games back, but when it comes to multiplayer games it won't be the same, as there will be waaay less people playing. And what's the saddest thing is that it happens to the better ones.

They are too greedy for that, because subscripshun. Not that it's crazy expensive or anything but millions of people paying the fee every year is of course more profitable than people spending 70 bucks or so for 10 games they like just once. That's why professional software is also switching to subscription model. I have 2011 iMac with 32Gb of RAM, upgraded video card, and 4Tb SSD still running High Sierra for compatibility with older software, with a bunch of graphics/image editing software installed, DAWs etc. And even some games from GOG. I don't need to update anything, it does exactly what it's supposed to do. Same with 2016 laptop with Linux. Guess what? Corporations want to avoid exactly that, they have buckets ready and want to milk you for money non-stop. That's why there's more and more live services in gaming. Also just look at Tekken 8 and compare it to Tekken 5 on PS2 which had 3 classic arcade tekken games on the disc and even Starblade as a bonus. How cool was that?

Its the reason they went ham on the rom sites with their lawyers, they will try to bring classic games to bolster memberships to their subscription service and likely push it as a new exciting way to compete with players world wide. But what Nintendon't know is that they could have done it without attacking the emulation scene and alienating many of their own customers further.

From my understanding the original point to to this release was to sumulate the actual Nintendo championships from years ago.
The event i attended was right before they released super mario 3 and in the qualifying run you had to get 50 coins as fast as you can in super mario bros then run a lap on rad racer then get as many points as possible in tetris before a 5 min timer expired.
I havent picked this up yet myself but i kind of mostly want the physical edition for the replica gold cartridge to go with my zelda 1 & 2 nes cartridges.

Based on this game's promotions, it seemed to be oriented toward Nintendo's competitive / speed runner demographic, and to give current and new speed running players a fresh [and official] opportunity to try speed running and place on leaderboards. The game seems to execute the *championship* aspect pretty well. Championships aren't for everybody, and neither are international ones. The game's fine.

Thank you for the comparison! I only own Ultimate NES Remix and I've seen a full lets play of the World Championships. I'd say NES remix is overall better. More games, multiple stages in a lot of challenges, the remix challenges which all give more variety. I think it's a better selection as well. I'd trade Ice Climber for Dr. Mario and Punch out any day lol.
I'm not sure, but I think NES Remix has challenges from different parts of the games. Like I think you have to fight Nightmare in Kirby's adventure, you don't get that far in World Championships.
Also the screen is too cluttered for my liking in the Switch games. It's much easier to concentrate on the challenge in Remix.
And according to the video NES Remix has nearly twice as many challenges, so it just is better in every way.
Let me look for plus points for the switch game: it's on Switch not on a handheld only (I'm not counting the WiiU version only Ultimate NES Remix), the guides are nice to have, though as far as I know they are only there for the last challenges. The demo is useful if you don't know what to do, but I don't think NES Remix was that cryptic.

When I was a kid playing these games, sure I had to play some part over and over but that was to get to the next part/level. There is also the fact that we live in an age of controllers with turbo and macros. With my 8bitdo Ultimate, I can set A to turbo and take down the first Zelda boss with ease. I can create macros to do all the moves exactly. Don't think some of top of the leaderboards haven't done that?

3D All Stars. Made it digital limited. DIGITAL!
All stars on the wii. Was to celebrate Mario. It was a lazy rom slapped on a disc.
Kirby on the Wii, was a good compilation, they never released it in Europe.
I Dont know why Nintendo does these things. They cheapen out everytime. Like you said, just add playable versions of the games. Trust me nobody is going to stop getting the switch online service if this card had full versions playable.
I Actually dont like the Nes, Snes online stuff. The user interface sucks, the selection of games is extremely limited. We had more games available on the virtual console. That was more that 15 years ago.

I never palyed NES Remix for the WII U or 3DS since I never got those systems. I almost boycotted this game since it's not offred on the PS5; but since thier's an 50/50 chace that I may buy Nintendo Switch 2 "That's up to Sony" I got it in cart form just for the 13 games on the cart; the online stuff has no vaule to me. The palystation torties I can earn have an vaule of less then zero to me. If Guinness came to me and told me i got in thier book, I wound say to them "I don't give an dam; that means nothing to me".

I'm with you, Mad. I am happy I bought the full 60 dollar version as it came with collectibles that I wanted. It also helps that the special edition is actually rare... or perhaps uncommon as Nintendo isn't making anymore (so I have heard). I myself am roughly halfway through the content as I rarely play the Switch. I have so much to play that I'll get back to it eventually.
Addendum - Unfortunately, what Nintendo did makes total sense. They don't want us owning anything anymore. You can thank all of the people that fully got behind digital only media. They are the reason we are losing everything. One day in the near future we'll be thankful for a product like this because it will probably never happen again.

The problem with rarity is that it is a mass produced illusion.
Special edition, Limited run, Limited edition etc etc are all terms used to imply rarity on a mass produced item that is likely to have hundreds of thousands if not millions of that item produced.
Implied rarity is just a marketing strategy to get people to part with their money for a piece of plastic and a few pieces of card that barely cost Nintendo much more to produce over the base product but charge double for.
Got to give Nintendo credit though as they have the ability to predict just how many of that "limited product" will sell and produce just that amount for maximum profit, well with the exception of the nes classic/mini as they failed to read the market on retro gaming with that and did not produce enough of those but that could have gone either way.
Then there is true rarity where only x hundreds of quantity is produced but then the over inflated pricing becomes the issue like the Atari 50 collection or the metal Analogue Pockets.

Well....not necessarily. I have been doing this for a very long time. There are many games that have a limited print run and that's it. This is something all publishers do at one point or another. Case in point- The Super Mario collection that came out in 2023 had a single shipment print run. Nintendo flat told us after a couple of weeks it was gone and they weren't kidding. You can buy it digitally but if you want physical it's going to cost in the hundreds of dollars from a private seller. Today most publishers/developers only ship their preorders and after that you will be hard pressed to find one out in the wild.
Addendum- I just picked up Tne Bitmap Burrau Collection for the PS5. I did it because I wanted to play/own the games on the disc... it was made in shockingly low numbers as well.

@@Sinn0100 As far as I know Mario 3D Allstars is not available digitally anymore either. Except if you bought it already. You can play SM64 if you pay for the more expensive NSO but I think the buttons are weird on that vrsion. I don't have NSO so I don't know for sure.

@@Sinn0100 I was referring to the bit of plastic etc that you get with these "collectors edition" sets and not the physical game itself.
I am referring to (in this case) the NES cartridge and handful of laminated picture cards that have been mass produced that has an extra charge of $30 on top of the base game price of $30 that probably barely cost Nintendo $2 extra to produce.
Marketing know that if you hype something as "rare" or "limited" then people will snap it up because of the implied "rarity" of that item that has been mass produced.
There is no set guidelines as to what constitutes "rare" or "limited" so that could be 1 item produced or 10 million and marketers can sell it as such regardless of numbers.
Marketers have a target audience when they market these "rare" mass produced products and given your response you are clearly in that target audience and in some instances so am I because I have purchased a mass produced "collectors" item because I have liked it but I am under no illusion that item will be worth its purchase value in 20 years time or will it even be close to that value then given most of this stuff will remain worthless but we both know there are so many "collectors" out there making these purchases for that reason and that is just delusional.
However with all that said your response is seemingly trying to justify a marketing practice with a whole other scummy practice that the industry as a whole is using these days and this is where you lost me.
Limiting the run on physical media is not done for the purpose of marketing a "rare" product but is being done to eliminate the used games market entirely and reinforced by the fact that digital media does not have this "rarity"
These corporation make zero money from a second hand game and in reality lose a sale given that is one less customer purchasing a new copy.
These corporations are being disingenuous with how they are approaching this.
When you combine this along with physical media scarcity and not owning that digital media you purchased given they can take it away from you very easily it all adds up to some very scummy practices.
Lets not forget that companies like Limited Run Games further reinforce these scummy practices by these corporations as well as those of you who must go buy that limited produced physical copy of a game by these corporations to maximize profit.
By all means do continue to defend a marketing practice of implied rarity with collectors editions by using a scummy practice of reduced physical media and not owning your games to make an invalid point about mass produced rarity given both scenarios are completely unique and one of them is outrageously scummy.
You do you I guess but without a doubt you will be there along with the rest of us calling out the industry for killing off physical media eventually.

Digital is NOT the problem. DRM is. You can "own" your digital purchases as long as you buy DRM-free. Granted, that's only on PC, considering consoles are DRM boxes now.
