@@shanicek5188 There wasn't anything much he could do based on Pony Express solutions. It not only boils down to Jimmy but the fact that the company took excessive cost cutting to the point where it was affecting everyone's mental health on the ship to think rationally and make the correct choice. Jimmy was always going to be the powder keg that was sooner or later going to blow up, and the worst part is that similar or worse situations have happened to people working under Pony Express.

The thing that pissed me off the most about the ending (MAJOR SPOILERS) is how easy Jimmy went in comparison to everyone else. Daisuke had to writhe in pain on the floor loosing blood due to the tens of cuts crawling through the faulty vent got him, Swansea had to watch this, face a lunatic with a gun, and then get somewhat "taunted", strapped to a chair looking down the barrel of a pistol. It's heavily implied Anya was raped, and died of intentional overdose, while being pregnant and knowing she'd kill her baby, next to the living corpse that was her captian. And curly, well, the entire fucking game is about him. He had to watch his entire crew, who he clearly cared about, die, one by one, in horrible ways and his close friend being behind it all. The worst part is that his ending isn't shut, he got frozen and its up to luck if someone finds him, cuz if not hes going to slowly starve to death, alone.
Meanwhile Jimmy, the guy behind ALL this, just shoots himself once and done. Lights out, no suffering. And the fucker probably was satisfied too, thinking that he just sacrificed himself for his captain.

It was Crit Croc that made that observation. Adding to that, it meant Jimmy didn't take his position as co-pilot seriously at all. A competent co-pilot would know the ship inside and out to make safe cuts in the foam, its emergency protocols & systems (tellingly, Anya is reading the safety manual 'cos Jimmy never bothered to learn), and maintaining crew morale. A job which fell to Daisuke, the intern.
The true horror of this game is we've all come into contact with and have been abused by a Jimmy at some point(s) in our lives. Unlike the Tulpar's crew, we were simply lucky enough to escape.

One detail that stuck out in my mind is the Polle in the final hallucinations having its dialogue displayed in the exact same color as Anya's. With that connection and it referring to Jimmy as its "old man", I think there is some part deep in Jimmy's subconscious that is calling himself out for his horrible actions against Anya and the pregnancy he caused, but with it being the horse mascot, it's driving more home how he refuses to see humanity in Anya or her pregnancy, no matter how far the events of the game drive him.

Remember the dead pixel dialogue? Every crew member has their own. With Swansea it was the unhappines with his own life. Daisuke masks his insecurity with cheerful smile. Anya is... we all know what her situation is. Curly also stated what keeps him down. Jimmy however, IMHO reppresses his own conscience, if he truly disregards Anya as aperson, why he uses her "Our worst moments don't make us monsters"? I do think that Jimmy is just too scared to admit the fact that he hurt her, another human being and before you counter with "What about killing Swansea?" he hallucinated that life or death situation, Jimmy is too much of coward to actually kill anyone, he didn't let Curly die with dignity, and only watch as Daisuke was fading right in front of him.

I always thought with the Anya color and with it referring to Jimmy as its "old man" along with the fact they say "nah maybe that's above your pay grade", coupled with the psych eval response he'd give Anya like "I find myself having sexual attraction to cartoon horses", it's meant to be a conversation that Jimmy might've had with their kid one day, how his child would view him. "Old man" being "Above his pay grade" implying that Jimmy never would've had any part in raising the child.

I mean look at what happened to our Pony Express during the Western development in the USA. For a while it was a mean to reach the distance between the East and West but it lasted about only a year when the telegraph was finally financed to make the junction, by then, the whole idea was pointless because messages could be brought in an instant rather than about 10 days. So much like in Mouthwashing, the whole thing lost out on technological development that proved to be better and the couriers as well as those that handled the outposts lost their job and pretty much were left with nothing to show for it.

The way things go in real life, typically as a company starts to circle the drain they become more desperate to stay afloat and will make dramatic changes in policy.
What most dont understand is in a 'natural' capitalist market these companies only last ~50 years, and usually collapse when its original creators, the ones with the passion and drive to make a succesful buisness, pass or retire, and incompetance fills the void.
Modern corporations avoid this by diversifying so much that any individual industry they operate in can fail and not sink the entire company, and this is usually only possible through monopoly or government subsidies

The sleep deprivation thing is what gets me. Have some experience with sleep deprivation and it is one of the most damaging things you can do to a person. If someone gets less than 5 hours of sleep a night, they won't just feel like absolute shit in the morning, they will start having micro naps during the day. They will get sleep deficit which puts you an entire day behind in your sleep cycle, if this goes on long enough it will lead to seizures and other kinds neurological disorders. He says that stuff because it's her he's talking to, and he starts pushing the boundaries with stuff like that similar to how abuse can be like boiling a frog. The cartoon horses comment represents how little he respects the psych evals, but also how little he respects /Anya/. To him, toying with her by making comments that make her uncomfortable is funny, and it's the first step towards his ultimate commitment of a heinous crime against Anya, which is borne out by how he never cares about what happened to her. He isn’t someone who seeks out cruelty or violence, he’s a fairly average man with personal flaws. His issue is that he refuses to acknowledge or work on those flaws, and under the right (or in this case wrong) circumstances, he just makes one terrible decision after another, refuses to learn from or even acknowledge any of them, and in the end all of those awful choices pile up and make him a monster.

I feel like Jimmy's SA of Anya was a very sick way for him to "reclaim" some power back due to his envy and spite towards her.
Maybe this will be shocking to people that don't have been sexually asaulted but most of the time rape is more about humilliation and power than it is about sexual atraction. Jimmy needed control, he clearly had an inferiority complex towards Curly, and the only way that he could somehow "step" on the ladder was humilliating someone that was already on the ground. Thats why he seems so fixated on how Anya is a failed nurse, on how she is incapable on her job, he wants to push her to the ground so that he can be one step above. He wants to convince himself that she is inferior to him, that she is pathetic and weak. Also, Anya and Curly clearly had some sort of friendship, so Jimmy probably felt even more treathened by her. By assaulting her, he was not only humilliating Anya but he was also showing Curly how utterly incapable of proteccting his coworkers he was. Very sick but fitting to his self pitty and envious personality

My favorite imagery in the game is the use of light and dark to compare Curly and Jimmy.
During the segment before we interview Jimmy we walk through a lake of blood with broken ladders before we are eventually absorbed by the rising sun. Jimmy also mentions how Curly is at the top of the ladder and he's at the bottom. Further reinforcing this idea.
And throughout the game the time before the crash is lighter and had more green tones, whereas after is filled with darker and has more red tones. I think this meant to show how different Jimmy and Curly are.
Curly is the star, he is warm with the crew and gives everything he has to everyone, without asking for anything in return. On the other hand Jimmy is the black-hole, dark, cruel, he does nothing but take and destroy. Circling back to the TV scene, what do we see?
A black-hole absorbing a star, darkness overtaking light, Jimmy overtaking Curly as captain, Jimmy (a cosmic body in this metaphor) killing Curly.

I might add that befriending people is a real tactic that gr00mers do (relevant because of Anya’s SA), it’s often their step 1 for manipulation. It gives them “cover” (as well as access) since as your friend they make you believe “he’s a good guy, he can’t be that bad.” And they can pull off this manipulation over a long time, making it hard to detect. So, be careful out there, if you know a friend did something, say something about it and be aware.

It is difficult to ensure a safe voyage without a co-pilot. Moreover, there is another problem. Let’s say Carly teaches Daisuke, who was probably the least busy crew member, how to pilot the ship and assigns him the role of co-pilot. Meanwhile, Jimmy is essentially an ice pop in a cryo-pod. If a serious accident occurs, what would be the plan? There are only three usable pods. Putting Jimmy in one of them would mean effectively sentencing an innocent person to die in Jimmy’s place in the event of a catastrophe.
As for how Carly tried to handle the situation, we do not really know. Perhaps he planned to talk to Jimmy first and then tie him up with rope. Perhaps he intended to gather the entire crew for an emergency meeting. Either way, it does not matter. Jimmy crashed the ship before Carly could act.
It is not that Carly did not intend to act. He simply acted too late.

We can assume the cryo pods were functional because of the end scene, however it’s likely the team would’ve been heavily fined for using them, considering the fact that they haven’t already been using them. Theoretically it would be more time and cost effective to have the team manning the ship spend the majority of their trip in the cryo pods, with them being automatically woken up every month or so to do routine maintenance and in the case of an emergency, they’d be there to fix any issues the ship couldn’t handle on its own. The presence of the autopilot system implies to me that they had the technology to implement an automatic waking system, but pony express didn’t, so who knows. Either way, the fact that the cryo pods are there for emergencies only implies to me that they aren’t as functional as they’re being advertised to be, or the cost of the energy they use is too much to justify using them outside of a life or death situation. Which then brings up the same penalty issue that comes with reporting Jimmy. I still think curly should’ve done something more than just stand around, but I also think it’s a lot more complicated than “why didn’t he use the cryo pods is he stupid”. All of this also ignores the fact that Jimmy would NOT have gone willingly into one of those and we don’t know how dangerous he would’ve been if they had tried. Probably less dangerous than the alternative lol but that was probably part of what would’ve gone into considering putting him into one of the cryo pods.
Thank you for coming to my useless Ted talk I’m going to finish watching the video now

Also, if the ship could be reliably flown by a single person, I'm pretty sure the company would have fired Jimmy long ago, or at least, the co-pilot position wouldn't be a thing on their ships anymore.

The only thing Curly could have done to jimmy to "arrest" him and keep him detained would be to, in my opinion, put him in one of the cryo pods against his own will. That could have been done with the help of Swansie, perhaps at gun point or while jimmy was sleeping. Still, that wouldent be an easy decision to make as a captain. We learn that there are company policies that fine the whole crew for miss use of the cryo pods and maybe using them as a glorified prison cell would count as a "miss use", further more, planning out such an arrest is both something that would take time and would likely be something curly would only consider doing after exausting several other opitions.
Ive also seem several people float around the idea that Curly should have held Jimmy accountable by exposing him to the rest of the crew, openly telling the others of what happened, but i think that would be a stupid idea, as it wouldent solve anything but instead only make Jimmy more stressed, unstable, and prone to taling "severe actions"

Yeah, I feel bad for Curly (and everyone else barring Jimmy) because he really was in a pretty big lose lose situation. We know now how it turned out, but from his perspective, trying to keep the whole crew in working order and avoid confrontation seemed like the better option. Sadly, it ended terribly, but really, there was no clear path to take at the time.
Ironically, most of Curlys mistakes happened because of good intentions rather than malice. Choosing to tell the crew about their termination made things worse, but he did it because he felt it was the right thing to do. Trying to placate Jimmy to keep the crew running led to him crashing the ship, but he did it because he felt it was the best option and underestimated how deranged Jimmy was, who was also a personal "friend" of his.

I think if Curly had followed after Jimmy to the cockpit after their talk it might have changed something for the better, but given how Jimmy's so quick to talk down to Curly and how Curly implied Jimmy is quick to get angry and lash out a fight might have happened if he did (and then Pony Express would've probably docked some of everyone's pay from their last paycheck cause PE sucks)

    • @ultimamage3

The only context needed is that while Curly is one of Jimmy's victims, it was his enabling behavior that allowed Jimmy into that position.
Jimmy's rape of Anya is not something that would've happened only once and completely out of nowhere, his knowledge of spiked cocktails and their amnesiac properties is telling, he actively avoids taking responsibility and denigrates women, and Curly already knows that he's an unstable person and quick to anger, but he still put "being Jimmy's personal friend" and the image of peace and civility/avoidance of confrontation above actual justice and was thus dismissive to Anya and her issues, believing her assault and Jimmy's condition to still be "fixable" by someone other than himself.
Jimmy should've been nowhere *near* having a job as co-pilot.

Anya seemed to be very comfortable with Curly, so I’m sure she thought he was a good person. But he betrayed her by enabling Jimmy. There was rope on the ship, he could have tied Jimmy up but instead he tried to compromise and find an easy way out. But I also think being horrible burned and losing limbs and being condemned to a life of pain and suffering is more than enough punishment 🤷‍♀️

I got pretty tired of people fully blaming him for what happened when Jimmy took full advantage of both his friendship and his pushover personality. He has human flaws and honestly any bystander in that situation would probably not know what to do when you are stuck inside a ship like the Tulpar. People use the argument that he is a full on enabler and he could've just cut Jimmy off way before anything happened, but then these are the same people who give very "fantastical" solutions such as: "Curly could've simply shot Jimmy and they could've returned home". like... my guy... everyone would've gotten arrested for murder the moment they reach earth, and forget about giving Anya her well deserved happy ending. What I love about this story is how hopeless the situation is in general. You can't apply any fantastical happy ending solution cuz of the context of their situation. Minor note about the tonic packet and quinine: tonic water quite literally IS quinine, and the reason Gin and Tonic exists is because Colonial era British soldiers would mix the tonic with gin to make it easier to drink. Modern day tonic water has a lot less quinine and more sweeteners added since it's usually drank as a beverage rather than a medicine.
I think the reason the packet being mostly quinine is supposed to refer to the fact sweetener is restricted, not for actual space malaria treatment.

I believe that Swansea “chasing” down Jimmy in medical, breaking into the cockpit, and being tied up in utility are all part of Jimmy’s extensive imagination and a copping mechanism. It’s to make him believe that he’s the “hero” in the situation, and that he had been “protecting” himself from the big bad guy who had only hurt the innocent youth. So many players immediately jump to the conclusion that Swansea is the bad guy or is nefarious, which is created not only due to his behaviour and appearance, but also because we are seeing the man through Jimmy’s eyes, and Jimmy is a highly unreliable narrator. Jimmy has constructed this idea that he is the hero, and that a person like Swansea, who is fatally flawed due to his less than striking appearance, personality and habits, is the bad guy in this situation. The same thing goes for him putting Curly in the cyro chamber, and then shooting himself. He’s saying “I am the good guy, the “hero” in the end. I “sacrificed” myself for my best friend because I value him so much blah blah blah bullshit.”

To seeing how Jimmy is so cruel to someone like on Anya, and how poisonous he can be to someone like Daisuke. Everything about this story just does such a perfect job at making him feel detestable. My four favorite suggestions:
    - Analyzing Evil: Park Yeon-jin from The Glory
    - Analyzing Evil: Frank from Once Upon a Time in the West
    - Analyzing Evil: Thor "The Swede" Gundersen from Hell on Wheels
    - Analyzing Evil: Suguru Kamoshida from Persona 5

15:24 Its not even good mouthwash either, 14% alcohol and a high sugar content that makes it useless as a disinfectant. The dollar store wouldnt take Dragonbreath today!

One thing i always like to bring up about Jimmy... he knows how to make a spiked drink.
He knows it won't kill Swansea, it will just knock him out... hell! He might not even remember being knocked out!
In context of what he did to Anya... it is rough.
Like, it is simply impressive that when audience is faced with a company as bad as Pony Express, a company that looked at concept of capitalism and said "hmmm, we absolutely can do it in worst way imaginable, yeah" - Jimbo manages to be even worse.

I also like to point out that in that easily accessible hallway cupboard outside of the lockable medical office, there are (four) bottles of paracetamol, but only (one) bottle of disinfectant? They're only a few months into their journey. And they have to break that cupboard open with an axe; they can't have been using that disinfectant on Curly post- crash.

Playing this game when it first came out, it was very apparent that there are a lot of parallels between Jimmy and Curly (I thought this up until I realized Jimmy fucking r*ped anya). One actually tries to own up to responsibility as captain (but still fails anya) while the other is trying to run from it but act like he has everything under control as captain (fails as a human being).
I think it’s very interesting that you only play from their two perspectives overall.
Most of the story being told from Jimmy’s perspective as an unreliable POV adds extra layers of completely fucked trains of thought that I hadnt even realized until I thought about it afterwards and watched analysis.
I think the most heartbreaking thing I noticed is when Anya asked “Why do you think they lock the medbay but not our cabins?”
Jimmy didn’t deserve the easy way out, he got to keep running until the very end, he never owned up to anything but the hallucinations in his own head.

I find Jimmy more of a rabid dog than a Voldemort: more than culpable for the parties he bites, but so far gone that he should have been rejected by the parties that unduly enabled him.
Had Curly decided to euthanize their friendship, the dirge of the Tulpar would have had a far different conclusion.
