    by the way as to my mentor comment. I walked into that firm cold. I did my internet search research and that was it. It was a blind apply off of the popular professional social media. Cold applying still works and no networking does. I just knew how to sell myself on my resume and the interviews.

    Hey Matt, I recently stumbled upon your channel and came away super impressed with the concise and informative nature of your videos. If so, could you care to share it (my own YT channel is on Personal Finance & Investing which is admittedly quite saturated).

    • @PeakFrameworks
      @PeakFrameworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope no courses. I would say the biggest thing I noticed is that getting to 1k subscribers is pretty hard. You have to find the channels / communities that actually like your content and will share it to their friends. For me, this was FB groups and Reddit. Then just post often and I think TH-cam's algorithm will start to kick in. If you're struggling to get to 1k, I think you should re-think your messaging, content, and whether you're targeting the right audience.

    Quick question: I’m currently working as a Financial Analyst in the commercial real estate industry. I’ve been out of college for about a year now, and I’m worried I may never be able to break into investment banking. Do you believe it’s too late to get into investment banking at this point? I’m 23 years old. Most investment banking analyst get hired right out of college so I’m just unsure if I’ve missed my opportunity.

    • @PeakFrameworks
      @PeakFrameworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's tough - are you working at a firm where you could potentially lateral (e.g. Brookfield or Blackrock)? Otherwise you'll probably have to make a few moves. Like potentially going to a real estate advisory support role at an investment bank or boutique advisor. If I were you, I would diligently try to network and make moves. It might make two moves to break in.
      Also really depends what college you went to. If you went to a super non-finance school you'll most likely need another degree.

    These are in my opinion really bogus questions. When I got interviewed at one of the firms I simply said, all top firms are similar, and I just want to work for the best and be the best, and I have no specific reason why this one. I am so glad they stopped asking ridiculous questions such as strength and weaknesses or asking for references. All the questioned mentioned are simply useless. If they want to get to know you they should just ask two types of questions, technical, and have a chat on personal life. Nothing else. Then you cannot even make up lies because it will show.

    • @PeakFrameworks
      @PeakFrameworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That... is an interesting perspective. I think most investment banking and private equity firms are still going to ask a couple of qualitative personality questions. I think this video (though it is quality I'm sure) proves beyond doubt that this interview question is largely a waste of time. Candidates answer this question with whatever they believe you want to hear - absolutely not what the truth is (which is most likely they don't really care which bank they work for, they just want to work in banking and make lots of cash). If you want to find out whether they have researched the company then ask them something about the company. This game we seem to have forgotten we're even playing is *pointless*

  • @graememccallum148
    @graememccallum148 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    This is incomplete advice. Your “why work here” does need to tie directly to the firm’s revenue drivers / goals, but you have to tie that reason to why that is important to you.
    Example -
    Q: why you wanna work here?
    A: “So...during my first internship I worked at a very large and established company (say Halliburton) in corporate finance. I loved being at a company with such a dominant market position because it gave us a lot of firepower to make big investments and exposed me to great projects. The problem was we were slow. Because we were so established we were sometimes more scared of losing market share than expanding. What I like about RBC is how you’ve managed to bridge the gap between being a dominant player and having that almost start up mindset towards growing in new spaces. I want to be somewhere that is both strong and eager to get stronger, and there are few, if any, better examples than RBC”

    • @graememccallum148
      @graememccallum148 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A2: “something I’ve learned during my time in university is team dynamics are important. During my first semester at school, when I was eager to meet as many people as possible, I selected some teammates for projects that, while great people and still great friends, were not the best fit. I don’t find aggressive leadership and watch your back mentalities are the best way to create results. I prefer environments where everyone wins, or no one wins. What Ive learned about Goldman from those I’ve spoken to is you guys pride yourself on collaboration, trust and teamwork. That kind of attitude is lamentably rare on Wall Street and why I think Goldman’s culture is the best fit for me.”

    questions like why this firm is one of dumbest questinn ever that only m&a people would ask. As a trader, we never ask candidates that question. This question does not have objective answer bc its soley based on ones experience, and perception, therefore its subjective answer where we cant evaluate quatitatively.
