THE OLD TIMES SW LONDON

  • hi i spend a lot of time making these small films of when the days were a lot different. most of the photos are from old books or old post cards. i love doing this to show you how life was way back then. some people can not buy books or find things to do with local history so this is why i have done this for all of you.
i do not do this to make money in any way, it is just for free so i do hope you all like the small films i do as it takes a long time to do. i did use to live in SW London but now moved to bucks where i find this is much better for me and my family.
all the best --- Jason Blackman.

My great grandfather was the smithy in Southfield London SW . He owned what is now the park tavern pub in Southfield high street , he was given the contract to care for the horses shoes and foot care, for the horse drawn omnibuses prior to trams being used . My father born in 1902 became the naval guard of honour when King George opened king George’s park in 1923 in Southfields .

It would be nice to be able to read some of the captions, which either don’t fully appear before the photo is changed, or don’t stay on screen long enough to read them! The collection of photos is wonderful however!

As soon as the captions are visible, freeze the picture to allow yourself a longer inspection of the scene

@@dollybearzz8401 Sorry. . I don't use a mobile phone and have no idea if that's possible. U do know that these photos are not going to look so magnificent 5" x 2.5" on a mobile phone rather than full-screen on your home computer.

@@Baskerville22 Thank you for taking the time to reply, much appreciated, even though you are not able to help. I don’t have a computer so I can only see TH-cam on my phone, but I’m used to the limitations of viewing on a phone, so I don’t really mind. I’m always hoping to see a photo or two of where my Dad/Grandparents lived, in and around Tooting, Streatham and Hendon, whatever the size of the photo. 🙂

Great seeing these old photos. I was born in Putney. The place has long-gone now. The working-class social milieu, I mean. Those old back streets off the Lower Richmond Road are Millionairesville now.

Life was slower, quieter, and the interactions between people were more direct, human and genuine. Civility and moderation in both behaviour, dress, attitude and speech were commonplace, and valued.
In comparison, we have today in the West, a new age verging on barbarism.

I grew up not far from Tooting. My Grandmother was born 1910 and her Mother my GGrandmother was born 1885. I grew up knowing GGrandmother until I was 8 and it amazes me that she saw the World like that, she lived through so many changes.

I was a London taxi driver from 1966 to 2020 and I can say that I have travelled all of these locations many times and I am amazed how they still look exactly the same today
