"Kids these days" just need the same kind of loving and attentive parenting that kids in previous generations had. Predatory marketing by vape companies has caused the spike in usage/addiction. It's all happening on our generation's watch, as the adults in the room. If anyone is to blame, it's us. You blaming "kids these days" is like blaming the victim of a car crash for being in it.

I'm probably the only Mario fan that became a fan through the cartoons. Most cartoons then always featured big muscled larger then life heroes, but Mario was just an average overweight guy that was always trying to do the right thing even though he had no real super powers or special abilities. As a kid I never felt like I could become Batman or Spider-Man, but I thought maybe I could one day be like Mario. My favorite episode is Brooklyn Bound, the only episode to explore how Mario and Luigi feel about being lost in the Mushroom Kingdom with no way to go home. There's a surprisingly subtle moment for this show where Mario loses his power up because the thought of never seeing the Princess again hurts him that much.

When Lou Albano passed away, a reporter asked Shigeru Miyamoto “Where were you when you heard that Captain Lou Albano passed away, and what was your reaction?” Miyamoto took a minute to answer, “You’re the one who just told me,” was the response.

This isn't just a minor celebrity, though. This is the dude who put a face to Mario on television in the US. I don't think it affected Miyamoto anymore than he showed. Miyamoto is pretty myopic/insular in his perspective on the world. That brought about much good in the world of video games he created. At times like that, however, it hurts. He isn't particularly warm or caring toward those in his professional life. It's just how he is. I'm not actively hating him or calling him a scumbag. I'm simply stating a fact. Miyamoto isn't particularly empathetic or warm.

As a lifelong wrestling fan since the mid 80's, and a kid whose parents were born in Italy, it was cool to see a paisano, also born in Italy, like Lou Albano play Mario.

I feel much is made about the stereotypes as negatives, but I feel like just telling that part isn't fair. Mario and Luigi were Italian plumbers from New York. Albano and Wells' portrayal of the Brothers Mario made the culture appear friendly and accessible. Even as a child, I felt the mirth and humanness of the characters made them understandable and real. I loved them so much then, and still do today.

To put what I mean into perspective, for the 90's Super Mario Bros movie, an Englishman and a Latino, whom I both admire and respect greatly as actors, portrayed Mario and Luigi. Rest in peace Bob Hoskins. And I will never forget how great John Leguizamo was as the Clown from Spawn.
Anyway, I'm not implying that one race can't play another. I just enjoyed seeing Captain Lou in wrestling and a TV show for a video game. I suppose for me, as a kid, it was a bit of a nerdgasm 😆. Like when Bret Hart showed up on the Simpsons.

The best syndicated 'videogame' cartoons during the Mario show's era of TV were, at best uninspired, like Alan Bohbot's Sonic cartoon ('Adventures of' was essentially a Road Runner with two "not" coyotes).
At the absolute worst, you had the void of entertainment and plot calling itself "Double Dragon".

The Legend of Zelda cartoon was by far my favorite part of this show. Aside from Link's cringey behavior (which even as I kid I thought was atrocious), I always liked the concept of the Triforces being individual but connected artifacts, and how the cartoon actually portrayed game mechanics like the zappy sword, rupees as arrows, and respawning monsters in the context of a high-fantasy world.

It’s one thing to know you’re going to die eventually, but to actually FEEL that you are going to die and completely cease to exist is pretty heavy. You're being way too harsh on the Zelda segments. "Incel"? Come on, now! The petulant, bratty teen Link characterization was incredibly funny, and played well as satire. Zelda was pretty much the straight man of the duo for the comedy options it presented within the humble children's programming format. And despite its forced origins, Link's "WELL EXCUUUUUSE ME, PRINCESS!" has remained an enduring online Vidya meme nearly 4 decades later. It was nothing groundbreaking, but it made its mark in the early Nintendo renaissance era. You threw so much shade I could swear you were transferring hate from the infamous CD-I disaster, 'Wand of Gamelon'! 😂
Great video overall, The Super Show still brings back warm fuzzy memories for all its low budget idiosyncrasies and shortcomings .

As a kid growing up as a prime target for that show, I was so enthusiastic about it. Lou Albano was so expressive, big and fun! Danny Wells was a really great "yes, and..." improviser. I never failed to laugh and smile when I watched. The point wasn't to be great TV. It was supposed to be fun, and they were so successful at it.
The fact that Albano, Wells and their guests hit a little more adult in tone from time to time sold me on the fact that these were legit grownups inhabiting a real world. Between the goofy fun, Mario universe stuff, and the celebrity guests, it was just the best thing on TV to me. It made me so sad that they didn't bring it back. I must have rewatched the series in syndication 3 or 4 times over.
I learned a good bit about literature, history and culture because of the seeds of curiosity that show would plant in my mind. I wanted to know what they were talking about, so I took it to my library, encyclopedias and, occasionally, Hollywood Video to learn more.
Regardless how their performances came off, I have a deep appreciation and affection for Albano and Wells for their role in my formative years. I'm grateful this show came together and that I can cherish these memories from my childhood, which left me with few memories to cherish. I forever remain hooked on the Brothers.

Albano is the very reason wrestling became huge in the 80s: he managed to get the WWF and MTV together to make a series of wrestling and rock connections of which Lauper’s multiple videos were most memorable.
this show wasn’t meant to be canon to the games, just a show featuring the Mario brothers and other characters from the game. nothing more, nothing less.

  • @ShanetheFreestyler

My favorite Mario actor will always be Lou Albano. Charles Martenet may be the most iconic, (and I agree should've played Mario and Luigi in the recent movie; he can still perform!) But Lou is more memorable in my book. Plus, he was actually Italian!
Looking back, I like to think the live action segments of the Super Show as taking place after the Mario Bros had retired from their adventuring in the Mushroom Kingdom to return to Brooklyn where word would spread and that's why they'd see so many celebrity visits. When you think about it Albano was in his 50's at the time, but Mario is supposed to be in his 20's. (At least according current suggestions from Shigeru Miyamoto much like how the current canon is that the Koopa Kids aren't Bowser's kids as they explicitly were in SMB3.) Since Mario and Luigi are more lively in the animated segments, you could assume these are from their younger days.
As for the Legend of Zelda segments, yeah it's more of a mess, but I still chuckle at Link's "Well excuuuuuuse me, PRINCESS!" And if the upcoming movie doesn't have that line, I'd be surprised!

I don't care what other people may think, I consider the show to be the canon Mario. The overalls were differently colored and not the shirts, Mario has a thick New York accent, Luigi wasn't a scaredy-cat.

My first time finding out about this shows existence was an ad in "Disney Magazine" (if anyone remembers that), saying Mario was coming to DVD, and then later finding a copy of it at Walmart. I wasn't able to get it at the time, but then one day in 2007, I was having a sleepover at my cousin's place (Shoutout to my cousin. That sleepover was a ton of fun.) And I noticed he had "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" Volume 1, and needless to say 10 year old me KNEW I had to watch it. So we basically marathoned Disc 1 til about midnight I believe. Then the following morning, we basically marathoned Discs 2, 3, and 4 inbetween playing both "Super Mario Sunshine" and "Kirby Air Ride" on the GameCube. Then when it was time for me go home, I asked him if I could borrow it. He said yes, and lets just say I wore the f..k outta those 4 discs. I'm surprised they still worked by the time I gave his copy back to him shortly after getting my own copy of Volume 1 and later Volume 2 in 2008. Basically "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" was 10 year old me's favorite thing in the world if only just for the fact that prior, I always wondered if Mario would ever have a TV show, and one sleepover later and I find out that not only did one already exist, but it had already been a thing 8 years before I was born. So this show has a lot of sentimental value to me just for sheer novelty alone, and now whenever I hung out with my other cousins or friends, I would always bring my Super Show Volume DVD's and flex to them saying "Yeah. Mario had a TV Show.". To this day at family gatherings I have younger cousins who loved the 2023 "Super Mario Bros." movie, and I show this show to them, and they just get a massive kick out of it cause to them, they think "Wow! This is like the new movie!" and that just makes me happy. And back in 2008, I thought those two Volumes were all there was as far as Mario TV content is concerned, until May 2008, when on the very first day of summer break that year. My cousins came over for a pool party to celebrate the end of the school year, and my cousin not only introduces me to TH-cam, but the very first thing I see on that platform, were two AMVs (Animated Music Videos). One of them being footage of "Super Mario World" set to "Crank That (Soljia Boy) by.......Soljia Boy, and the other was footage of "The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3" set to "Somewhere I Belong" by Linkin Park. And aside from those videos being how I first learned about both musical artists, but upon seeing those two videos, and me not recognizing any of the footage shown as I only had the two Super Show Volume sets, 10 year old me's initial reaction to both videos was "THERE'S MORE?!". Needless to say 2008 was one of the best summer breaks I ever had as not only did I get my Nintendo Wii for my 11th birthday in June of that year, but I was also binging Mario videos on TH-cam like mad, as not only did I get aquainted with "The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3" and "Super Mario World: The Animated Series", it was how I also learned about the 1986 Japanese exclusive anime OVA, "Super Mario Bros. The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach", I also watched Handyman's "Stupid Mario" series, which is basically if SMG4 was nothing but "Family Guy" style cutaway gags. Sadly that series is lost media now, but if you remember it when it was there, you are absolutely goated. Its also where I watched a lot of "History of Mario" videos and it basically told 10-11 year old me that I had a LOT to learn about the entire "Super Mario" franchise.
So in a way, I have "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" to thank for not only being 10 year old me's primary source of comfort, but helping me go from being a dumb stupid kid who thought he knew everything about Mario cause he ate up as much as he could on the GameCube, GBA and DS, into an ACTUAL fan of the franchise and learning its history and how significant Mario is as not only gamings biggest icon, but one of the biggest icons in general entertainment. Throughout 5th grade and going into middle school, "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" was kinda how I prefered to characterize Mario, much in the same way Sonic fans looked towards "Sonic SatAM" when it comes to how they prefered to characterized Sonic. As for the show itself, objectively speaking, the live action segments are the best part by a long shot as they are just short amusing sitcom skits that never overstay their welcome (although "Day of the Orphan" can eat my @$$), whereas the cartoon segments I feel don't hold up all too well with the constant barage of movie parodies, endless pasta puns, more animation errors than a Hannah Barbara cartoon, Toad being more obnoxious than Season 1 Pinkie Pie and 90% of episodes having next to nothing to do with "Super Mario Bros.", BUT its not all bad. The banter between our heroes and villains may be more cheesy than the "Cheese Land" track from "Mario Kart Super Circuit", but its the fun kinda cheesy. Mouser is easily the best character in this show and for a while was my favorite Mario villain BECAUSE of how he's portrayed in this show. I mean how many Mario villains do you know who are just so done with Bowser's BS? The Koopalings (with the exception of Larry/Cheatzy) are hesitant to stand up to King Dad, but in the episode "The Pied Koopa", Mouser doesn't even hesitate to yeet Bowser into his castle moat just to shut him up. Again, he is objectively the best character in this show. So while yes I do have issues with this show and how it more or less doesn't adapt the franchise accurately, something that the 1993 live action "Super Mario Bros." movie gets lambasted for (rightfully so)/something that the other two DIC Mario cartoons addressed, I can't bring myself to outright dislike this show. Its entertaining, turn your brain off entertainment that you can just put on and get at least a couple of laughs. Is it for everyone? No, but I will say those who are likely to be the more into this show are either those who grew up with the show when it first aired on TV 35 years ago, those who first discovered this show through DVD releases in the late 2000's (like me), or younger kids of today who loved "The Super Mario Bros. Movie", who will see how similar this show is to the 2023 movie in terms of overall vibes and premise and love it for that novelty alone. Like earlier this year, I gave my cousin's son both Volume 1 and the 2023 movie on DVD for his birthday. And last year, another one of my cousins kids? I gave him DVD copies of Super Show Vol 1 and 2 and a DVD copy of the live action film to hype him up for the new 2023 animated film, which I later took him to the theater to see.
So in a way, "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" is severely outdated in terms of animtion, celebrity guest appearances, and how much of a departure it is from the "Post 1996" version of Mario. Like when you think of Mario, you generally hear that high pitched, squeaky clean "Wahoo!", "Yipee!!", "I'm-a-tired.", "So long gay Bowser!" and "Wowie Zowie"! Whereas most OG Mario fans from the arcade/NES days, will think of Mario as being a rough, gruff, blue collar third generation Italian plumber from the big apple, who's more than ready to give his enemies a brutal taste of "Pasta Power" and when his back is against the wall, if he can't beat em, he'll join em, then beat em! But for as outdated as this show may be, its also just as timeless because despite everything that makes it outdated, Younger Mario fans will likely get into it because its Mario, and they like the character and they like the fact that he can be something other than a collection of pixels/polygons that YOU manipulate through button presses. My younger cousins are proof of that.

I wasnt familiar with the show until the meme wave coming from it in the last few years, but I really enjoyed this video and learned a lot about Mario, if you ever have time maybe consider doing a similar video in the same vein about the Donkey Kong Country show? I think it would be just as interesting.

People keep forgetting that the Triforce did talk in a few of the games, namely the ending of Link to the Past as the "Essence of the Triforce", and in the Oracle games during the beginning which called Link and then transported him to both of the foreign worlds from Hyrule. So the Triforce talking in the cartoons just feels like an extension of that, as I could easily see the Triforce talking to the royal family during the timeline which the royal family had possession of the triforce, to guide both the royal family and Hyrule.

We also loved the double dragon movie.

Interestingly, the *first* occurrence of the phrase "Well, Excuse Me" in association with the Zelda Franchise pre-dates the show by a half a year. In the Howard & Nester comic in the March / April 1989 issue of Nintendo Power, Nester is at the library researching for a book report and drops a thick book about the Legend of Zelda onto a table with a loud thump, drawing angry glares from the other library patrons, prompting him to say the line.

Loved this cartoon as an 80's child, and, in following the vlog and others sentiments, at the time of the shows inception I wasn't concerned with the accuracy of the show translating the gaming content, but was simply enamored to see Mario and friends becoming more of a living icon in the world around me.
That said, please do a review of Captain N the Game Master.

Lou Albano is someone I know almost exclusively from this cartoon, and all my other knowledge of his career is spillover from being interested in this cartoon. Likewise I know Ryan Reynolds primarily from Detective Pikachu; I know that's not the major hallmark of his career in pop culture or in his own fortune, but it's what I know him for.
The Triforce of Courage isn't present in the cartoon because it was only added to the games with the second installment - the first game only had the Triforces of Power and Wisdom. The third Triforce wasn't even named Triforce of Courage in-game until Ocarina of Time, in 1996! It was called Triforce No. 2 in Adventure of Link, and the Triforce as a whole was united and treated as a single object in A Link to the Past.

This is the version of Link we loved the most. We were teens when this came out and we practically were Link. Except for the "Excuse me Princess." Which we started doing as a joke with our now wives afterward. But we never missed a Zelda episode. It's only now did we find out it was considered a terrible show. And that Link was annoying. We had now idea, but then again, if you like something who cares.

That's a bunch of nonsense. I saw plenty of boys liking the game when I was a child, so it doesn't make sense to say if something is specifically made for boys or girls if both like to play it.
Maybe Zelda was too much of a challenge for them or they heard it from someone else.

I’m in the minority that strongly preferred the Zelda segments to any of the Mario stuff, and I certainly kept coming back to the later NBC stuff (futilely) hoping for something better (instead, the NBC DiC Nintendo shows were worse and looked cheaper, and got progressively worse each year until NBC killed their Saturday morning block of cartoons). Zelda had character-based humor and actually engaged with the games straight up, whereas the Mario stuff relied on tired riffs on stuff that I had already seen done on multiple cartoons at that point. Worse, the music covers added nothing and are almost always edited out of official releases poorly.
The less said about the Club Mario version the better, but an internet rumor that persisted for years is that Andy Heyward hated the segments and went so far as to order them destroyed owing to how he felt that a segment with him made him look like a fool. (This tracks because in addition to being cheap, disgustingly anti-union, a tremendously awful writer, and almost singlehandedly destroying the ‘80s syndicated cartoon market through oversaturation of bad shows, he was absolutely thin-skinned.)
These criticisms aside, the show was by far and away the best thing DiC had going at the end of the ‘80s and into the ‘90s, as the shows looked worse and worse every year with lower budgets (and, paradoxically, more and more retakes that are obvious if you look close enough for visual inconsistencies) and writing that got increasingly more insulting as the competition (Batman, X-Men, TMNT, Gargoyles, etc.) got better. The generally great cast deserved far better, IMO.
