    Always nice when you get a taster of what the end result will drive like - well done Simon.

      It's always a relief when things go well too. I should probably go around and make sure all the bolls are tight still but it all has to come apart at some point for painting of course.

      That's the best thing about TH-cam, seeing other peoples projects and their progress and being inspired by them. Especially the 'real' projects not the ones just done for TH-cam I mean.

      I don't tend to want to be in my own films. But there wasn't really any way to avoid it in this one! Should have worn my hat to hide the bald spot though! I just tell everyone that's just a symptom of always driving topless cars top down everywhere, it's all that exposure to nature!

    Fantastic to see and hear her run. Good bounce on those springs and the Riley exhaust note and gearbox noise. You must be thrilled.

    • @asciimation
      @asciimation  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was actually useful seeing how much movement there was on the springs and chassis. I should try that again with my little camera in different spots. It was held in place by blu-tack! Nothing was hitting or rubbing as far as I could see which was good.

      I usually try to keep out of my own films but that was hard to avoid in this case. I tried to get Milo to drive but his paws don't reach the pedals...

      @@asciimation Hi Simon this just popped up, and I thought you might be interested in what they might have . The Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum have just acquired a 1928 Brooklands Riley 9. They only show it arriving but may be one to watch in the future.

    First drive is always a thrill, a real milestone , the silent third gearbox is a delight to use , well done .

    • @asciimation
      @asciimation  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That gear shifter is really nice to use. Very short and very direct and you could hear the 'clonk' in it as it goes into gear. A lot of the noise will have been from sticking the little camera directly on top of the diff. When it's on the road it will be interesting to see exactly how 'silent' that silent third gear is.

    Holy cow that was exciting!! It sounds great and looks superb racing by. Now you can enjoy the fact that she is a real living breathing car. Now if you can only convince the authorities of that fact, you'll be all set. Are there any Brooklands style events you can go to in New Zealand?

    • @asciimation
      @asciimation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The branch of the car club I am in does some events. One is a mid winter drive only for topless vintage cars that goes all over the back roads to a mystery location. The rules say you can not put the top up. I've been on it once as a passenger and it was great fun. And there was almost a yearly racing event that didn't quite take off but I think there is still a remnant of it each year but instead of being fully vintage it has other eras of cars. We are too small here in NZ to have enough cars to have single era events I think so combining is sensible plus you get to see more cars! The local car museum does do a monthly coffee and cars even over summer months but you rarely see pre war cars at that. I don't want to race it but I would like to take it on a track at some point just to see how it goes.

      I've actually bee close to driving it ever since I got the engine running so it was really a bit slack of me waiting so long. I was pretty confident it would go. This is the third car engine I have rebuilt and the second vintage car so having that experience with the Austin 7 taught me a lot what to expect from a pre-war car.

      Even just a short drive tells you so much about if everything is working or not. I just went for the full round the flower beds. I'd not even actually checked the clutch before. Given that was a bit of a mix and match job I am pleased it worked!
