Rod Roddy worked at WKBW Radio here in Buffalo, NY. Later, he was the voice over on the ABC prime time sitcom "Soap" from 1977-1981. Two years later, in 1983, he was the announcer of the syndicated dating game show "Love Connection" which was of course was hosted by Chuck Woolery!

The bell sound for guessing the word right was used on Password Plus, Mindreaders, and the Bill Cullen version of Blockbusters when the family pair scores and for the gold run bonus round

This is a pilot for one of the best game shows ever, and it was based on the popular board game made by Hasbro, and it was also the first game show to be made by Hasbro, and Reg Grundy who also did another game show called “$ale of the Century”.

      INCORRECT
_Scrabble_ was 1st published by _Selchow and Righter_ out of Long Island once James Brunot, the first licensed manufacturer, discovered he could not meet product demand.

@@OGNoNameNobody Selchow & Righter was the first company to put out “Scrabble”. When Selchow & Righter went folded in 1989, it was bought by Milton Bradley for another decade, and then Parker Brothers, and finally both MB and Parker Brothers folded into Hasbro.

@@OGNoNameNobody Coleco Industries bought out S&R in 1986, but Coleco too went belly up in 1989 and thus sold most of its assets to Hasbro, hence why Scrabble landed in Hasbro's hands...

Laura Chambers was previously on the Party Line pilot with Gene Rayburn, while Larry Fisher would later appear on the test episode of Bruce Forsyth's Hot Streak (the successor to Party Line).

There’s another pilot to this, but I think it’s long gone.

Notably, the Scrabble Cube in the pilot did not make it to series, as it was destroyed in between pilot and series due to incompetence.

      Incompetence of what?

@@MrHirenPso digiblader is half right. There was indeed a second cube constructed, but here is why.
Essentially, the stagehand usually in charge of rotating the cube was out, and the substitute didn't know exactly how it worked.
They let the cube turn...and turn...and turn...until you could hear the creaking of metal and the sound of shattered neon tubes. By the time it was realized what happened, the cube was a trapezoid. The inner computer was fine, but the cube had to be completely rebuilt.
Taping had to cease for some time, and it cost over a million dollars to remake the cube.

I wonder why Rod Roddy didn't get the announcing job, I guess he was busy with PYL on CBS

It's possible the pilot wasn't made for a specific network, but NBC chose to pick it up.

Another pilot that proves ITERATION is _crucial_ in Game Design. Having the round's winner determined by dollar value, which INCREASED as the word was filled in(and therefore EASIER to guess) was STUPID.

But there's that element of risk, keep building the pot knowing if you hit a stopper, your opponent can swoop in and take everything.

Some pilots do that to emulate an actual competition.
Chance of a Lifetime did similar so the producers can show what a million dollar win would look like.
