I really never understood why some people called Shea a dump. It was a gorgeous field in my opinion. The beautiful huge scoreboard and half open stadium made the venue so unique! I miss Shea so much. If there's a Heaven, I'm convinced Shea will be there waiting for me!

Citifield is nice, but I miss Shea so much. Could have taken 1/3 of the $ spent on Citifield and made Shea super-modernized and all Mets fans would have been thrilled.

How I feel about old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Also same time period, clearly remember 1989 as a wow year w Orioles new all black hats. I was there before 89 but too small to fully grasp everything but by 6 I knew I loved that stadium, tallest place in the city.
Looks beautiful symetrical, real box seats, no goofy nets, a true Stadium for Major Leaguers. No ads all over tye field in this 80s early 90s era. No modern parks looks junky to the eye, like w lego blocks in Cle upper deck and what they dud in Col ruining thier stadiums beauty for dollars..

Now half the fans are at the bars and restaurants in the stadium. Weekends in the late 90s they would have 50,000 + now they are lucky to get over 35,000. Times sure have changed.
Was that the night of the NYC Blackout? There was also one in July of 1977 and the Mets were def home that night and lights went out around 8:30-9 at night somewhere in there and it zapped everything except for the few flood lights around Shea. Eerie

Memories of Shea- 1970- Two Puerto Ricans that only minutes before had tried to spook me by saying "BOO" suddenly run onto the field and jog at a leisurely pace while several overweight cops give chase and try to corral them. Same area as seen in this video. Large, beefy, WWE wannabee turns around, rips off his own shirt {buttons flying}, bears his own chest and ROARS at the person seated directly behind him. Before he gets the chance to lunge at his target he is grabbed and tackled by about three semi-undercover security people with a much larger force showing up as the seconds ticked away. Within half a minute more than a dozen cops have responded. Why so many fights? I don't think I ever attended a game a Shea without a person wearing a yarmika brawling against someone who obviously had touched a verbal soft spot. EVERY GAME.

I worked at Shea Stadium for Harry M. Stevens, the concessions, from 1968 until 1976. I started as a commissary worker. I left as Supervisor. I loved that stadium. There was definitely improvement that could have been done 👍.

I think the railings were just a normal thing then for separation of the field level boxes. With the new stadiums, the emphasis went to the suites for companies and the novelty of the the field level box was lost. Comisky had the bright yellow railings that were iconic. I grew up at the Vet. They had the silver railings between the field box seats. They had plaques on each box too for what or who owned them. I’m sure it was pretty impressive then. But having a full suite with bathrooms and indoor space is much more impressive now. I loved Shea. Amazing place on many levels.
Shea Stadium 1964-2008 so 44 years. It’s hard to say but even as early as 1980 less then 20 years after it opened the new Mets Owners Nelson Doubleday & Fred Wilson would both take a tour in and around the ballpark and commented how shitty it already looked. Then you had the Football Jets playing there from 1964-83 and it was not a multi purpose facility, it was only designed for baseball so it was a total clusterfuck.
Shea was a DUMP.. Especially in the late 70s through mid 80s. I always said it looked like a giant toilet bowl and was located in the aptly name, Flushing NY...

I remember delivering paint to Shea when they were remodeling it in the late 80s.
We need to sneak some orange and blue paint. into the stadium one night and get to work on all those terrible colored seats. 🧡💙

Awesome! Shea was the first professional sports complex I ever saw in person (1988), and where I saw my first MLB game (1992). Miss it quite a bit. :(

Why did the field level seats have railings that went down the middle of each section? You don’t see that anymore in these new stadiums.
