    You start this video by saying you're not a financial adviser. You may not be, but I used to be. Your number one point about making a budget is the best piece of advice given here and extends far beyond comics. By simply and honestly mapping anticipated income versus expected expenditures, you can give yourself such a good financial road map that the other points are almost irrelevant. It's nice to stretch your dollar/pound sterling/euro further, but if you don't know how many you can safely spend, you've already lost. Good on you for highlighting this.

    At some point I realise it's not hobby anymore but addiction so I made strict rule for my self that I can't pass certain limit and I happy with it sometimes it's hard to let good deals go but at the end of the day I still value every book the same and have no intention to sell them or have any regrets😀

      You make a good point, and one people overlook often. Just because it's not alcohol, gambling etc. Doesn't mean it doesn't become a bit of an addiction, thank you for pointing it out and sharing your view :) 🐶

    Great video Marcus, budgeting advice is one of the most needed in the community!

    I think the biggest tip of mine is to really set a realistic goal of what books you want to collect and read. For example, I would love to have all the silver age Marvel omnibus, but that is a billion dollar goal. I can more realistically budget to collect every Captain America omnibus from the silver age. I will never buy Masterworks collections. I will only buy Doctor Strange in Epics. I'll never buy a Spider-Man collected edition (because there are just too many I would ever want to buy). I love Image deluxe editions, but I'll only buy the 3 or 4 series I would want my friends to flip through on my coffee table.

    • @mdb9920
      @mdb9920 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or maybe you'll collect only Batman Absolutes or just Ultimate Spiderman Omnibus.

    • @stephentheshywarrior2759
      @stephentheshywarrior2759 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's great advice. I'm trying to stick to Batman and my master goal is to have 90% of ASM on my shelves. The nature of epics definitely takes the stress out of trying to map everything. I do want to branch out into indie stuff more but Marvel releasing so much these days it is a struggle.

    For the last couple of years I've been buying any omni I want when I wanted it, as I had a decent job. however, in 1 month I'll be quitting working forever and I won't have an income. This is going to be excruciating as I might be able to afford 1 omni a month, if I'm lucky. the FOMO will be strong going forward. Good job I bought my 200 omni library (and other OHC) when I was lucky enough to do so. At least I will get to read them all now.

    A lot of these tips are pretty helpful, I realised after buying an older marvel omnis that I'm not really a fan of marvel besides a few characters/ very specific writers.
    If I had of read some issues online I probably wouldn't have bothered 😅

    I always have a budget on comic books, I try not to spend over anything between $450-500 (AUD). However I’ve recently started a new job, that pays well and it’s a job where I can save and spend. So I’m starting to buy Omnibuses, I just think it’s cheaper overall

    The following is not an indictment of you or your content (I actually enjoy what you do): It's terrifying that the world needs a video that tells people they need to feed and house themselves before they fuel their hobby. Woof indeed.

  • @Wishlake
    @Wishlake ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd always explain the buying frenzy - "you could always sell'em - you can't get any money back, if you're out every weekend." And that's basically true - but of course, I'd have to be really hard-pressed to even consider selling the bigger chunks of the collection. So I recently put on breaks with buying, especially now, when the omnis double-tripled up in releases (and the prices also went up) - I will buy a book or two a month, but that's it. The thing is I barely even have time to read & finish them and the untouched stack is high enough.

    Great advice. I try to plan 6 months ahead by putting £10 to £30 aside every month and it soon adds up. if I don't have the money I won't pick it up. It is why I refuse to have a credit card so the temptation isn't there and theres no interest. I owe it down to my parents teaching at a young age. I may be old fashioned but it works.
    What I struggle with is the balance of Collecting comics and trying to have enough funds for other hobbies. I get besotted with owning everything and that shouldn't be the case. I do need to cut down and refine what I want my collection to be like in 10-20 years time.

  • @Lastsonkal
    @Lastsonkal ปีที่แล้ว

    This is great advice. I do something similar. FOMO can get me, like it does us all. I make a wanted (money no issue) list. Then I trim it down to books I know I'll get to complete library. But even then, most books I'm buying and keeping are ones I've read already and just want a nice version on a shelf.
    And yes, preview titles you're not sure about.
    I've been slowly trying to focus collection/library for the last year or so. Some books I want, but know it'll be a single read. So I look for other ways to read either library or MU. Let's face it, alot of comics are read once and never again. Plus with all the reboots/relaunches. I try to stick to certain eras.

    I decided to go for quality over quantity. I can get heaps more books at cheaper, bigger sites like Amazon, but I prefer to get fewer special ones from my LCS. I feel good supporting a local small business and I have more chance of actually reading all my books if I buy less.

  • @NichoMania2
    @NichoMania2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Try Before You Buy is such a good rule, I do that a lot now.
    I'd thought of getting the Snyder Justice League Deluxe Editions, until I read them online so I could read my copy of Death Metal dlx ed....
    I now regret buying Death Metal dlx ed. 😅
    More controversially, maybe, same happened for Wolverine & The X-men omnibus. Read it to see if I'd like it, found the art great, the humor fun, but...some of the characters just felt one-note and/or annoying. And some decisions just felt silly to me, so I stopped the online reading, and decided not to buy the omni.

    Only just started collecting Omnis and Absolutes about 8months ago so Budgetting? Yeah, Im still spending way more then I have. Lucky my wife bails me out sometimes :)
    Im not in debt, But I was supposed to start saving for a new Guitar this year The Solar T1.6D - AGED NATURAL MATTE / DISTRESSED and his chug pedal. which would cost about $2500au, But I already bought 3 omnibuses and 2 absolute editions. since Jan equalling close to $900au
    2 more Omnis coming in the next few weeks Dark nights Metal Omnibus and Frank millers Daredevil? That I dont want to miss. Also Spawns 1st 4 vols of the deluxe edition. I have vol 5. what that's another $1200au? Im ain't getting that Solar Guitar right now :(
    Plus I'm a gamer, Lucky Xbox gamepass gives me so much. But I want Dead Space remake. Yeah Im fucked haha
    Also collect 4k blurays... Im fucked, about to buy a house.
    Not like I dont have plenty of guitars or games or GN to read.
    But yes I need to budget way better. Also I feel some of these books will disappear if I dont pick them up?
    I got a rare Namor Omnibus for $200au and 90s Venom omnis vol 1 and 2 of ebay for really good prices. But they're still a couple of hundred dollars each pop. that's me just randomly searching ebay Australia.
    I have over 45 omnis and 10 absolute editions as well all the other types of hardcovers...
    But I am reading them, I was randomly reading bits and pieces of the omnis. But that would take for ever so I just got through Blackest Night and it was amazing! So for now I'm reading 1 at a time.
    I need another life trying to keep up with everything, Movies TV Omnis Games music/guitar and sport and traveling... also addicted to TH-cam :(

    Over the years I've bought so many books I never ended up reading more than once. (Actually just sold a bunch and got some big $$$ back!) I've also fallen prey to hype buying. Reading the stories you're interested in before buying is a very important thing to do and will keep your wallet happy lol.

    My LCS is really helpful for budgeting. They allow me to order what I want and then just leave it at the store until I can pay it off. They know I show up every week, so they never worry I’m going to leave them hanging.
    This is really helpful for books that may go out of print soon or become waaay too expensive. For example, when I heard IDW was losing Transformers, I ordered all of their IDW collections and just left them at the store and paid them off a few bucks at a time for several months.
