There's an interview around here somewhere with ALW explaining it all... basically he wrote it for Sarah Two (Brightman) while he was still married to Sarah One... and then everyone was like "Dude. You're writing a song for your mistress about how awesome it is that you're having an affair. YOU'RE STILL MARRIED. That's not cool!" So he re-purposed it into MOTN. But this was originally a stand-alone song.
Married Man" (music Andrew Lloyd Webber; lyrics Trevor Nunn) Dreams of summer, secret smiles between us Of us meeting, you thought they had seen us. We thus tried explaining, then it started raining, Then you said I love you girl and then I'm much too old to fall in love again. Time was golden, I felt I was falling, Waiting, smiling, hoping you'd be calling. Loving eyes upon me, showing me you love me, I woke up beside you once and said I don't think I could fall in love again. Married man you were happy and you let me know As you run up the stairs to reach my door. But I cried every time you had to go. Should have said, don't come here anymore. Winter, silence, shadows on the ceiling. You said, you're too young to know that feeling. Then your voice seemed colder, then you said I told her. I said well she's older but then She's young enough to fall in love again. Though I tried to forget her as you live with me. But you cried when she met you to return. You said no that's all over but you lied. Married man, are you too old to learn? Spring can be a very cruel season, Help me, help me, don't ask for a reason. Please you must believe me, I want you to leave me. One day if you're free, but not till then. I'm young enough to fall in love again. I'm young enough to fall in love again.
I watched Sarah's concert last night and she said "Music of the Night" was written for her but I didn't know about the different lyrics. Thanks for sharing!
This song is interesting because it's a bit on the scandalous side yet has a charm of innocence to the melody. Sarah's pitch here is perfect, by the way! It's nice to hear her not sing so much out of her throat like she began doing when she got older.
Que jovencita eras......ya se veía........la voz tan potente y linda que tenías.....que arriba has llegado....bravo y cuánta belleza.....tenía nuestra Sarita...besos desde España.
Just enjoy it , it was clearly posted for your enjoyment and interest in the history of this piece , Sir Andrew Loyd Webber has every right to change the Lyrics to his own compositions , the man is clearly to anyone who has an ounce of musical creativity or an ounce of the grey matter a GENIUS . and Sarah a class act , so PLEEEESE enjoy and be a little more polite unless of course you believe you yourself can measure up .
3.- Married man you were happy and you let me know As you run up the stairs to reach my door But I cried every time you had to go Should have said, dont come here anymore
As fond as I am of both Andrew and Sarah... I still cannot believe that they found this an appropriate song to perform on national television when he was in the midst of divorcing his wife so that he could marry Sarah...

FYI to all the commenters. This was NOT an early version of a song from POTO. It was from an abandoned early version of Aspects of Love. The words were written not for the show, but just to have lyrics to the melody. ALW felt the music he had written was not appropriate for Aspects of Love and recycled much of it for POTO. He then started again on Aspects of Love which is the version known today.
sounds like this version had a re-write if you watch the video of her singing it at the Sydmonton Festival that was included in Andrew's interview w/ David Frost, some of the lyrics are different
1.- Dreams of summer Secret smiles between us Of us meeting You thought they had seen us We thus tried explaining Then it started raining Then you said I love you girl and then Im much too old to fall in love again
i sang this song for my senior project i was a hit! married man was wirtten when they were together but couldn't realese it because he was getting divorce from his first wife. so it's an unrealesed song.
Operatic Mickey I would actually pay cash for Sarah to record these lyrics for an upcoming album. Then the whole world will know the origins of one of the greatest songs in Broadway musical history.
6.- Please you must believe me I want you to leave me One day if youre free But not till then Im young enough to fall in love again Im young enough to fall in love again.
Josh Adkins it is the same melody. It became “The Music of the Night” in July of 1985 during the Sydmonton Workshop version of Act I. They realized that the Phantom didn’t have his own signature solo number in the first act. So Andrew dug this melody out, and Trevor Nunn’s lyrics were discarded by Richard Stilgoe, who transformed it into “The Music of the Night.”
You could probably just use a regular version of Music of the Night and use these lyrics. That's what I've done with this and it worked okay (even though I know I don't have all the lyrics correct. (Sarah is hard to understand sometimes. :/))
*The original "Music of the Night" isn't this. One listen to Puccini's La Fanciulla del West will tell you that "Sir" Andrew Lloyd NoTalent plagiarized this directly from Puccini*

OMG, she is so tiny & precious, and has the '80's fluffy hair-do. What a beauty!. Love her, love her.
Oh, Sarah! She sounds so beautiful and looks so young! Look at that curly 80's hair! :D
This is the original lyrics. Some time later, when Phantom of the Opera came about, he decided to use this tune for Music of the Night.
The tune is classic, but the original lyrics tell such a different tale. Bravo to both Sarah and Andrew for the collaboration.

I hope that Sarah would consider recording the song with these lyrics for her next album. Especially since the drama behind the scenes has been over since 1990. But it’s entirely her decision.
Such a wonderful song, and the backstory behind it is even better.
Well, can we appreciate Sarah's hair here?
God, they're both so talented...
Exceptional!!! It's really amazing!!! See our beautiful SARAH in hers young years haven't price. Thanks for sharing
I LOVE Sarah.
Most sincere thing she ever sang.
Great hair teeth and voice. Sarah is the most interesting singer and performer. I have watched and saved every version.
I watched Sarah's concert last night and she said "Music of the Night" was written for her but I didn't know about the different lyrics. Thanks for sharing!
what a gem!
thanks!

Thank you, Sarah Brightman!

Geniuses don't need to plagiarize. This music was written by Puccini.
yes, married man was written before Music of the night. A lot of artists use parts of music they've written and make new songs from them

Fantastic!

Well, we all love a scandalous song.

So genuine and sweet. Pity there's no studio recording commercially available.
vampod1 I think Andrew should finally have this version officially released, just so people know where the melody they love originated.
Especially considering this year marks the 35th anniversary of “The Phantom of the Opera.”
vampod1 things can change, you know.
It originated in Puccini's La Fanciulla del West. He can't release this or the Puccini estate will sue him again (and win again).
Ronette Pulaski how do you know that for sure?
damn, shes so skinny and jovial!though it can't have the best lyrics like music of the night!
This is so romantic despite them both cheating on their spouses . . .
Enjoy, people :)

I like the final version much better!
She had the same mannerisms as now.

You mean music by Giacomo Puccini
Ronette Pulaski that’s still debatable.
then why does the Lloyd Webber organization pay the Puccini estate royalties every time the song is performed, dullard? charitable contribution?
@@BernardProfitendieu okay. Maybe I should credit it like so:

You are welcome:)
so glad they changed the words....

Please! :)
What show is this? When?
No it was written for Aspects of Love...and abandoned.
Which/What show are they performing on?
Merv Griffin show
Wait...what exactly is this? Did he write this before music of the night? Why do they sound exactly the same?
Josh Adkins it is the same melody. It became “The Music of the Night” in July of 1985 during the Sydmonton Workshop version of Act I. So Andrew dug this melody out, and Trevor Nunn’s lyrics were discarded by Richard Stilgoe, who transformed it into “The Music of the Night.”
3:25 pianoman: next time the arrangement will be better if we change those keys
ALW sure had the melody down pat, didn't need to re-write that, just the lyrics.
You could probably just use a regular version of Music of the Night and use these lyrics. That's what I've done with this and it worked okay (even though I know I don't have all the lyrics correct. (Sarah is hard to understand sometimes. :/))
I know they didn't use it, but honestly where on earth would this have fit in with The Phantom of the Opera???
ZitaAnne Reno it wasn't for phantom, it was for aspects of love. Then they just changed the lyrics for phantom.
Proof again that Andrew recycles melodies time after time haha.
+prettymonsterofevil Exactly! Hans Zimmer or James Horner (even though I love their music) are pretty good examples.
Differenza

Ronette Pulaski I listened to the Puccini piece, but it didn’t sound like a complete rip-off to me.
Then you should have your hearing checked ... and my Truth-o-meter tells me you're lying about listening to Fanciulla del West
