Notice how all infected above stage 3 all have more body fat than other infected, I think why Bloaters are so rare is because anyone smaller wouldn't have enough nutrients for the fungus to mutate that much, so even if they tried, they cannot survive that long.
What’s disturbing about fungus like this is that it builds itself out of the nutrients and tissue it absorbs from the thing it grows on. So that fungal crown on the clicker’s face, that’s made of the flesh the fungus absorbed, broke down, and turned into its own mycelium.
That's not true. Fungus is a fungus, regardless of what it feeds of. It just receiving the nutrients from the base it grows on (soil or organic matter) to grow more (fungal) tissue. Like all creatures do. The consistency (structure, hardness etc.) of a fungus may vary greatly depending of its type and habitat, though it is still fungus.
I totally disagree with stage 1 as you stated it. The victims do not loose high brain functions. They just are not I control of their bodies as the fungi basically takes over their muscles. It's evident in the games as well. Whenever you try to kill some zombies, they always plead with you...
BRain functions are gone by the clicker stage I believe, before that the infected are still there but can't control themselves, you see it when they ask for help when you hit them, or how the stalker form uses ambush tactics
The Mycellium Network is my favorite part about the lore... How the infected are all connected and someone disturbing a part of the network a few blocks away will alert other infected. So damn cool.
Ya bro as a a person with an obsession with zombie games and movies this is by far the most realistic and cool zombie lore I've found it feels like you're in a real world feeling your environment in real life
Well, when you really start to think about it, on the contrary, it doesn't make any sense at all. If anything like that would exist and all the infected were somehow connected through a network of mycelium, then any moving infected would break his link to the said network. And a mass movement would simply make it collapse. Mycelium does expand only because it is linked to its core. If you cut a filament, it will die or stay dormant, but it will be separated from the inner ring. In short, the idea of a global network of communication in mycelium exists, but it can only expand slowly and regularly, not suddenly fast on a moving object. And the outer parts of the network lose their purpose if they are separated from the core.
The 7th stage on here is only a part of the show and not the game. Its also not another form of infected, it literally is the infection. It's what's growing under the skin of all the infected people in the show. It's like the living embodiment of the fungus itself.
It is in the game just not the part about stepping on it. In the skyscraper for example you pull one of them off a door to get through but im surprised they didn't mention the stalkers thats between the runner and Clicker

SPOILER ALERT Don't get me wrong, but I really hope we don't see it in the series. Sometimes for the sake of creating a good series, aspects of the game need to be left out, and vice versa. An example of this is EP5 of the series, i cringed so hard when the bloater came out of the tunnel like some kind of anime boss and rushed straight for the disposable semi important character of that episode. This scene was cool in the game, but tranlating this to a series and sprinkling it with holleywood-ish script completely broke my immersion. There is the main linear path, which goes from runner, to stalker, to clicker, to bloater. However, the shambler and the rat king do not fit into this linear path and only exist due to the environmental conditions. This is why you only see them in Seattle and not at all in the first game. Let's just say... When us Asians celebrate Lunar New Year, we put mushrooms into our hotpot. Ever since TLOU game came out, I always felt funny inside after eating Oyster Mushrooms.
Chinese actually eat cordyceps, the fungus TLOU is based on, caterpillar cordyceps to be specific. They've been doing so for thousands of years as it is considered one of the most healing medicinal fungi and was mentioned by Shennong, one of the three "Sovereign Kings" of prehistoric China who introduced agriculture, medicine and the solar calendar.
for me I wouldn't really call the ratking a stage of infection. The reason why is that it has multiple bodies stuck together meaning that it isnt the process of the of I infected body.
the cordyceps -- not cannon to the game -- do not produce spores in the show. but part two has some scenes reliant on spores so I'm exited to see how it plays out. as well as this, in episode two, the most clicker filled episode so far, they no longer use echolocation and are just blind. we can see this when despite the clicking they can not seek out Joel, Tess, and Ellie until they make noise. while not confirmed, it is likely they only rely on sound, and no longer use echolocation.
Technically the eyes and nose are not being replaced in stage 3, the skull is literally being split apart by the fungus for that main mushroom on the head
Videos like this will kind of have to take into account that the television show has changed a few of the rules for how the fungus works. It seems like the 4 infection stages of runner, stalker, clicker, bloater are still canon. But spores are unique to the game, and tendrils are unique to the show. Is the shoe going to depict the unique abilities of bloaters and shamblers when it doesn’t want us to think the infection can be airborne at all?
I thought it was really fascinating that the cordyceps outbreak in the show started in Jakarta, rather than a place like the USA, China, UK, or South Korea. Sure, Indonesia may not be as populated or have as big of an economy as countries China and India, but it's big and interconnected enough to where a pandemic could easily emerge. Jakarta is Southeast Asia's largest city with 10.6 million in the city proper alone and many more people in the suburbs. The island of Java, home to 140 million people and 60% of the country's population, is the most populated island on Earth, and it's nowhere even close to being Indonesia's biggest island by land area. This makes Java extremely densely populated. On top of its overpopulation, Java is also very hot and humid, both factors which tend to nuture many different kinds of animals and plants, as well as all kinds of diseases. As such, a country like Indonesia is also very vulnerable to climate change, allowing cordyceps to eveolve so it can infect organisms with higher body temperatures. All of these factors make Java a place where a zombie infestation could easily overrun. Since Indonesia also has quickly growing manufacturing, shipping, and trade industries that exports Indonesian products worldwide, a pandemic could easily spread well beyond the confines of Java.
As a note too all Show only watchers the mycellium network as depicted in the show is a abberation from the game. In the game there is no mechanic like stepping on a mushroom patch would alert enemies instead the dead infected grow the same way onto walls but release spores which infect people. As a counter you(Joel) and other hunters, bandits etc. use gasmasks. Ellie doesnt need one tho as shes immune.

I always thought if I were to create the zombies I will put it in more scarier, more pleasant to look at so they can really strike fear... Like maybe zombies can have huge bumps all over their face and body and some of the bumps are bigger than others... So when I actually watch the TV show The last of Us I'm thinking that's going to be but I was wrong when I seen the clickers and they're in stage 3 I think it totally blew me away because that's exactly how is all these should look like.... And pretty much all stages are very intimidating very scary to look at.. the people that made The last of Us did a fantastic job with zombies in the makeup and quote give kudos to the actor and actresses playing the zombies especially that little girl who got in the car to chase Ellie
Runner : normal infected Stalker : sneaky mfs (scariest in my opinion), also very annoying. Clicker : most iconic, always keep distance Bloater : strongest and most powerful. Shambler : releases gas that burns, also keep distance. Rat king : most maxed out infected, especially it's bloater half.
Find a youtube channel that has spliced all of the cutscenes together from the first game. You'll get an immensely better show than that garbage HBO series gave us.
I was disappointed by the HBO series. What annoyed the hell out of me was them being around dead bodies covered with spores and NOT getting infected, like common?! That killed it for me and I didn't even want to continue watching. Also the cast was sort of weird choices.
It always made no sense to me,that in ALL of the ZOMBIE apocalypse stories ( no matter what medium), they always keep moving,no matter how long they(the zombies) were dead. I took Forensic science, and the writers always had an excuse why they never got to a point they just fell apart. Or froze during the winter. The human body is resilient, but not that much Especially when it comes to rotting.
It's based on a phenomenon that actually occurs with rats, in which their tales become intertwined and they die in large groups, all attached to one another, hence the appearance of the Rat King.. Look it up...pretty gnarly.

They've been doing so for thousands of years as it is considered one of the most healing medicinal fungi and was mentioned by Shennong, one of the three "Sovereign Kings" of prehistoric China who introduced agriculture, medicine and the solar calendar.
@@TM686K bruh💀💀💀
@@TM686K why always the chinese ☠
@@firebottle8402 lots of medicine also use cordyceps though, you probably even consume one without noticing it
This brings a whole new light to the game because there are many runners showing that all those runners were people just a few days ago-
The ancient Chinese used cordyceps fungi in their medicine for thousands of years. Cordyceps can now be found in some Chinese ginseng.
Oh no…

Great informative video.especially for those that have not played the game like me
for me I wouldn't really call the ratking a stage of infection.
In the official podcast, Mazin/Druckmann said they use echolocation...
@@halfheartedjumpshot238 So probably not a good echolocation then
Technically the eyes and nose are not being replaced in stage 3, the skull is literally being split apart by the fungus for that main mushroom on the head
I don’t understand the hype on this being lame. It’s really good.
Rule #1 of modern TH-cam: don’t make your intro 10 seconds long. Thats 2013 era TH-cam
Awesome vid, very well laid out.
I remember when this game came out i unfortunately was an xbox only gamer so I would watch people play and always thought this would have made a wicked show / movie.. Happy to see it followed through and they definitely didn’t disappoint!
We must have been watching different productions.
@@markbrowning4334 yeah I was hyped and I enjoyed a few episodes but 😬
@@melkrollwz Well, there was almost no infected on display or interacted with by the characters.
The characters were souless lifeless shells of what the game offered us.
The show spent almost all of its time virtue signalling and no time in plot or character development.
The show gave a us the gay slap in the face with the Bill episode.
It gave us the communism slap in the face with the black Maria episode.
It gave us the "all christians are bad" episode when it introduced a poor excuse for David episode.
I'm ok and even expectant that the series didn't go beat for beat from the game, but ALL of their choices were for the worse, by far.
If you want a good story without gameplay, just watch a video that splices the first game's cutscenes together.
I love how (show) Ellie finds a stalker near the clicker phase. You can see the fungus replaced its left eye and the chitinous plates of fungus had begun on the top of the head.
Shamblers are somewhat similar to the enemies in SOMA.
I just CAN'T wait for the Rat King to appear in season 2. The ultimate chunky boi ♥.
45 or 357 caliber for the first 3 forms.
44 caliber for 4th form.
S&M 5000 for 5th form.
Super Magnum or explosive slugs for every other big mutation.
Or, hear me out, live out in the middle of nowhere
Fun fact - thee virus based on the game is real but don't worry, it's only on ants, and to move into a human will take like 20 million years
The cordyceps goes onto other animals too tho,
Life cycle of the fungi:
*Runner* - 1 - 2 Days of infection
*Stalker* - 2 Weeks of infection
*Clicker* - 1 - 2 Years of infection
*Bloater* - 10 Years of infection
*Rat King* - 20 Years of infection
EXTRA INFECTION STAGE
*Shambler* - 10 Years of infection - Bloater but exposed to large amounts of water and hydration
The rat king isn't part of the traditional evolutionary line, it's a special kind of infected that happens in very specific circumstances
@@blazoraptor3392 oh thx

Those stalks erect from corpses just make me feel uneasy. I have to look away.
Imagine Rick fighting them.
He problably ain't surviving against one single clicker
@jasper7714 haha he can easily defeat a bloater
@Jasper Damn straight
Rick will just vaporize anything that dares to attack him. He can clear entire cities of infected in just a blink of an eye.

Will be one of the best Zombie Series in the 2020er years
It's not a zombie show.
It never occurred to me that the symbol for the FireFlies were 2 Fs , both Fs are the wings
Haven’t played the games yet, but honestly, these show clips look pretty good
The show is crap.
Play the first game, and then get back to me to thank me.
Don't bother with the dlc or second game though.
Zombies are never fully scientific, but this is as close as they've managed to get.
That Christine Hakim shot is *chef kiss*
A shambler never was a clikker since it still has eyes
The rat king is honestly the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen

Hope there’s more in the future
I have never play the game even though I like zombie movies and games but I always thought that every zombies and different movies are the same except maybe like a couple zombies and what movie can run while like The walking Dead they're all slow...
The only thing I wished for in the game was a bigger variety of infected.
Idk why I am watching this. They creep me out so badly.
8th Form: Cordyceps developed hivemind and become sentient.
Played the game and love the TV series. Great video.
Runner : normal infected
Stalker : sneaky mfs (scariest in my opinion), also very annoying.
Clicker : most iconic, always keep distance
Bloater : strongest and most powerful.
Shambler : releases gas that burns, also keep distance.
Rat king : most maxed out infected, especially it's bloater half.
Thank you for this. I don't play video games, so I don't know the back story. I love this show however
Some of the information is a little bit distorted from the TV series
Find a youtube channel that has spliced all of the cutscenes together from the first game.
You'll get an immensely better show than that garbage HBO series gave us.
I'm done eating mushrooms ugh
7th stage is exclusive to the show but im sure they will use it in part 3 😂
I was disappointed by the HBO series. What annoyed the hell out of me was them being around dead bodies covered with spores and NOT getting infected, like common?! That killed it for me and I didn't even want to continue watching. Also the cast was sort of weird choices.
Its beacuse spores were completly removed. What you saw was normal dust
The human body is resilient, but not that much
Especially when it comes to rotting.
let's just pray it wont be something more powerful than the rat king in Last Of Us 3🙏
The movie and game took the you are what you eat to the next level
The shambler looks teh scariest ngl

Honestly I'm living for the name rat king
It's based on a phenomenon that actually occurs with rats, in which their tales become intertwined and they die in large groups, all attached to one another, hence the appearance of the Rat King.. Look it up...pretty gnarly.
