      I can't believe the named it the same thing as a pro-KKK propaganda flick from a century prior.
      As for the controversy, I think a lot of that might be due to when it came out. There's a lot of people going out of their way to rekindle the racism that was once dying out in the US.
      If this movie had come out 10 years earlier, before the attempted resurrection of casual and overt bigotry, it would've probably would've been been received much better, such as how Glory was in its day.... Oh, and if you haven't seen Glory, I highly recommend it.
      It's about one of the military units serving during the civil war and the racism of the era, including from their own military. There are some inaccuracies, of course(one of which an entire scene hinges on), but the general history is solid-enough.

      I'll tell more specifically after seeing the movie, but at this point I really doubt it's history, most likely it's a heavy sugar-coating of an actual event.
      Real-life Nat Turner called for killing almost every white person that his rebellion faced. They didn't even spare children. Fucking children! (c)
      I doubt that it will be addressed in the movie at least in a way, that is historically accurate.

      If they hadn't been purchased by the white man, their black captors in Africa would have killed them. But the blacks didn't have any gratitude for the whites who saved them and refused to work most of the time, to do even simple things like picking cotton. Blacks today make it like it was so harsh. Here come all the racist trolls saying this is "another slavery movie". Besides this one, Django Unchained and 12 Years A Slave how many RECENT slave movies can you think of? Do you say that about all the comic book movies or romance movies? This merely shows history. And yes, slavery was a brutal part of American history. It also shows them rebelling against their oppressors. It's based on Nat Turner, a real person who lead a real slave revolt. And by the way, I say this as a white Italian American dude.

    • @carsonmontgomery8796
      @carsonmontgomery8796 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand where people are coming from though. American slavery and the American Civil War are concepts that are often explored in media, not just movies. I would enjoy something else, but I think the movie industry thinks that if they make a movie about anything more obscure than Vietnam, WW2, or the Civil War and slavery that people wouldn't want to watch the movie.
      But I see no problem with this movie. I like the concept. I just do agree the media could broaden their horizons more when it comes to their portrayal of history. But I'm sure this will be a good movie and quite enjoyable.

      Of course you hear those grumbles about Holocause films, you just aren't listening. I resent all forms of keeping old wounds fresh out of the sake of healing our "national consciousness." If it were for the people, why do these artist keep all the money? These things are products, and it's an outright fact that Hollywood has manipulated audiences for profits and benefits from racial division.
      Less than 5,000 recorded lynchings in history and you've SHOT COUNTLESS MORE OF EACH OTHER since then. Where's the constant genre push of that little tidbit? If it's about healing, maybe you should appeal to each other to stop the killing, not keep 150 year old wounds VERY fresh in the minds of each new generation.
      Of course the world of film has a right to tell a powerful story that resonate throughout history, but the pattern is way too transparent after all these years. No one benefits more from racism than Hollywood.

      Plenty of people ragged on the inaccuracies of Brave Heart, too. A well-written story can make up for some of that.
      Hell, one of the best period piece movies, Glory, had a major scene that required multiple historic inaccuracies to make happen.
      Though, there's a key difference between telling a story with some embellished or altered details and telling one with significant revisions that fundamentally change the story on a major scale.

      If you STILL don't recognize a minor good deed when you see one, then maybe you need a bit of an attitude adjustment. The aforementioned embarrassment was a potential scenario I was trying to save you from, I never indicated you should be embarrassed. I'm so done.

    This looks like a fantastic movie. However I see a lot of ridiculous hate in these comments from many different sides... We never should drown history, and we should always be skeptical as to what lens you are learning it from. Growing up (at least in my region of the Northwest) I was very lucky to have great teachers who taught us to the best of their abilities what REALLY happened. But that is not enough, we need to encourage our children to read for themselves and spend their own time learning... I wish I had more time to write but at the moment I do not. I will just end this by saying please... Please do not be just another wedge of division among human beings which every one of us is. Humanity is far more complex than "black people did this" white people did that" "but they did that and this and blah bah". Learn the history and use it to make the future more united, not to fill your heart with hatred.

    “The past is never dead. It's not even past.” - William Faulkner This film scares some people not just because it is about our black brothers and sisters rising up against oppression, but because it is an example for all of us of our ability and our right to rise up against oppression.

      That is not what the film is; only someone with a very simple mind would say that. IT is meant to show the horrible acts of the times, you can not empathize cause you choose not too. IF you were black in those times would you have done any differently? The who issue in this country is people who choose to lack understanding. They fought cause they had no other choice, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Those who preach hate and racism however are a blight on society, and I am not talking about jokes. IT is one thing to make a joke to poke fun and try to make something joyous out of something that is horrible. You choose to speak ignorantly, though only those as simple minded as you will agree. I however will post one thoughtful response on each racist post I see, cause freedom of speech means I have the right to speak the facts and truth while you preach nonsense that only easily manipulated fools would agree with.

      General consensus on the original:
      As a film, it revolutionized the industry and helped made it what it is today. The themes displayed, however, are overall racist/outdated.

      But why? They could have gone with any other title and they chose the worst one. That's like if a Jewish empowerment film was named The Triumph of the Will. It works as an effective title but we all know why we never used it twice.

    • @humanp4th
      @humanp4th 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MasterBDG701 agree, they are trying to use it as an empowering and triumphant, "look where we are today" title but it will turn people off being named after the most effective piece of white supremacy propaganda in history.

    Honestly I don't get why we are still treating slavery as a relevant topic. Obviously learning about it is important and should be necessary, but pushing the subject this hard just seems silly. And if these comments are anything to go by, it's just pushing the races in America further apart when we should be coming together.
    By this point in time, no person alive has experienced slavery, and it would be best for us as a nation to simply move past it and look to what we can do to better the present, instead of trying to retroactively "fix" the past.

      +James Carter the thing is, this movie is highly inflammatory and being used to push an agenda, whether that was the directors intention or not. For a movie like saving private ryan, it was meant to showcase a pivotal moment in history more than anything else. I'm not too sure that this movie is trying to be unbiased in its portrayal of history, as they are presenting it to be completely black and white (no pun intended)

    • @p8studios797
      @p8studios797 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Gamacios rarely is there a topic as divisive as slavery. The US went to war over it, and now commenters are going to war in the comments over it.
      The point is, slavery is over and nothing good can come from re-opening the wound with every new movie showcasing it.

    Movies like this move me. I’m Canadian so to an extent the slave trade isn’t taught in schools but I can only imagine the depth of how these people suffered. Canada has mistreated the First Nation communities, Chinese and Japanese. History is important to learn and be educated in to not repeat history.
