My only critique about watering from the top is in reality it rains. I mean sometimes it really rains. So you are right watering the roots is great, but once again it rains. Sometimes it rains for days that is when most of our gardens grow like crazy! Excellent Video!
Could you do a video on fertilizer? I use fish emulsion but I'm never sure if I'm doing it too much or too little. I do organic only. Thanks for the tomato pruning video. Thank you!
Seeing that your tomatoes are still green made me happy as mine in central valley CA. are still green, I thought I was doing something wrong. I kind of dug by tomato root and do a slow water. They are in raised beds. If I water to much with force the water seeps out of bed onto ground. We are very dry in a drought, no rain

Just my 2nd year gardening for my aging parents and, thankfully, do everything you suggested, except I usually water at night. I remove any foliage touching the dirt and always water the soil, not the leaves. I knew about the higher risk for fungus but felt it allowed the plants more time with water before it gets sucked away. LOL To be honest, I just don't wanna get up that early. Lmao
I have raised beds but I cover them with mulch, about 2 inches or more. This year I covered them with straw, to protect from heat and keep moisture in. Will this make the fungus, mildew and insect situation worse?
I water my plants one at a time, measuring how much I give and giving the water time to soak down before adding more. I don't use a hose, #1 I use rain water and #2 the hose can wash soil away from the stem of the plant and expose the roots.
When I over pruned I got sunburn on my tomatoes. How do you prevent sunburn. Could it be the difference between a humid and dry climate. We are in Idaho zone 6b... Not as hot as yours.
I'm fortunate my garden gets the afternoon shade. It really helps avoid sunscald. Also, I prune very early on and the tomatoes get acclimated to the sun as they grow. :) hope that helps! Thank you for watching!

Was the pressure from it, shown in this video, the lowest selection on the wand?? Seemed like high pressure for more sensitive plants!
We use a Dramm wand with a water breaker threaded on the end. It works really great for sensitive plants. I do have an on/ off valve that's very convenient!
Do you have thoughts about soaker /drip hose? I have been so confused on how often to water using a drip hose. I just ordered a soil moisture sensor so hopefully that will give me some more information. This is only my second year gardening and I have always struggled with how much to water. I never know if I’m watering too much or not enough.
I plant on running a drip hose to my raised beds soon. I don't have a lot of experience with them so I can't say for sure what the setting should be. As long as your getting a deep watering in once a day you should be good. I also like a drip system with a timer for the consistency aspect. Plants are like babies and tend to love a schedule! 😆
What type of head do you recommend to water with? I had an ancient solid brass one that was amazing and I have lost it. Bought another one and it's horrible. Also bought a plastic one and it's already not turning right to other settings😶 so freaking frustrating
How about watering too much? I was watering exactly the way you explain here in this video (I’m in zone 9- extremely hot summers- sometimes up to 110 degrees) and my garden beds started growing slime mold on top of my mulch. I assume I was watering too much?
Hey Heather! That's VERY possible! It really depends on how much moisture your soil is holding. The mulch will help lock in even more moisture so you may not need to water as often. I would practice deep waterings but give it time to dry out some before the next soaking.
Yes you can! Especially with young plants. They can get root rot if watered too much. It's a lot harder to do with mature plants in the heat of the summer.

But it’s rain water and it’s cloudy when it rains I’m always afraid watering from the top would risk burning because the sun is out

If it rains a bunch in your area, every week. If it doesn't rain, every couple weeks will work.

I use water breaker made by Dramm. It's plastic, but we've used them for years at the nursery and we really like them!
